wow...there was no thread for this? Considering how much money it did this weekend and the fact that it broke the one day total (surpassing the final Star Wars) Im surprised.

We saw it this morning...I have to say I left "kind of" disappointed...it wasnt what I was expecting...its much darker. It has its few humourous moments, like the sword fight scene on the the beach but, to me anyway, its not like the first movie. Gone is the "campy" feeling.

The effects, ESPECIALLY Davy Jones were really good. The whole flying dutchman and Jones' crew were fantastic to watch.

Orlando Bloom IMO wasnt all that great to watch, but then Im not an Orlando fan....I dont really think the boy can act. Captain Jack seemed different to me too than the first one. The basis of the story was good and I have to say even though its left WIDE open for next years sequel the very last moments of the film gave me a reason to look forward to it

I guess the matrix formula is the way to go with movies. Surprise first hit turned into a trilogy. Second movie is two hours of setting up third movie.

I disagree with the tone comment. I felt this one had pretty much the same feel as the first. Some parts of it were a bit darker, but overall still a lot of campiness and decent lines. I enjoyed it, but I can't say how good it was until the third one comes out. I'm glad I saw it.

I really understand that "kind of disappointed" feel. It had some great moments that really grabbed me the exact same way as the first, with the exact same "silly ol' pirate" feel of the Disneyworld ride. Then there were the other times that just... I don't know, pulled the wrong way. Like a piece of cloth that's got a great design, but when pulled too hard shows the individual threads and messes with the design altogether.

Babes still can't believe I called the end a quarter of the way through...

I caught it last night, thought it was pretty boring. They just rehashed jokes and bits from the first movie (stop talking about rum every other scene!) and the 2 major action sequences were remarkably similar (giant rolling things speeding down a hill?). Plus there was that deus ex machina towards the end (Spoiler: Orlando Bloom getting off the Flying Dutchman and onto the island.)

I'm disappointed that it's been a while since I've walked out of the theater thinking the movie I had just seen was great. X-Men 3 was a let down, Superman Returns was iffy at times, and this was was just stretched too thin. Here's hoping that Clerks II will bring up my summer movie-going spirits.

It's a Latin phrase:
Quote:
In some ancient Greek drama, an apparently insoluble crisis was solved by the intervention of a god, often brought on stage by an elaborate piece of equipment. This "god from the machine" was literally a deus ex machina.

Few modern works feature deities suspended by wires from the ceiling, but the term deus ex machina is still used for cases where an author uses some improbable (and often clumsy) plot device to work his or her way out of a difficult situation. When the cavalry comes charging over the hill or when the impoverished hero is relieved by an unexpected inheritance, it's often called a deus ex machina.
And please cut out that last sentence, or at least put it in spoiler tags.

I enjoyed the film and I wasn't disappointed by it in the least - because I didn't have high expectations of it. I didn't expect it to be an Oscar worthy film. I expected it to be a complete fluff film, full of pirates and sailing and fighting... and rum, of course. And with those expectations, I had a great time watching it.

3 act play.... good guys win... bad guys win, with hope at the end....good guys win.

I thought it was good. I enjoyed the humour, the story etc. I think that Depp was great again and had some more classic lines. Orlando.... indifferent and Knightly I was indifferent towards. Davy Jones was really quite excellent, and well acted as well. He was belieavble as whatever the hell he was. I'm not to sure about the story... but it's a popcorn movie, I went to laugh, see good effects, a good sword fight and eat popcorn. In that respect I enjoyed myself to the utmost

Exactly the way I went into it, I wanted to laugh and escape from daily struggles. The movie did the trick, we laughed lots, it was neded.
Did anyone else think the costuming was fantastic? Davie Jones and his mates were great!

I found it very enjoyable, right up to the part where I found out I payed full price for half a movie. I guess I must be the only one in the US that didn't know about the surprise "ending."

I did think that the Davy Jones effects were great, and they did an excellent job of integrating Bill Nighy's mannerisms into the character.

to much of the back and forth, back and forth; they take it,. they take it back, they fight, they fight them back... didn't enjoy it at all. I thought it should have ended when the beach fight scene started... and the ending? Cop-out in my opinion.

I would imagine that little ones, especially sensitive little ones, would have quite a few scares, and there is some violence that, while extremely mild by my standards (I'm a zombie movie fan), could be a little over their heads, hence the PG-13 rating. The vulgarity was minimal, if it occured at all. Without having kids of my own it would be hard to give an absolute answer, but just off the cuff, I probably would say its not appropriate for that age range.

There were a few moments in the movie that had me cringing, so I would say no to taking youngsters. Davy Jones is fuckin' creepy, as is his crew.

That movie was Grade A Mediocre.

The only parts I found were hilarious was when the one eye'd fellow and his life partner were sitting there talking about stuff and the tall one would comment on some deep philosophical subject that he would have no real idea about.

Yeah, just went and saw the movie- it was rather drawn out. I dislike Keira Knightley, for her acting and her looks. I am a bit sick of the typical Jack Sparrow jokes, and Orlando Bloom is just sooooo.....himself. Overall, the movie is maybe a 6/10, because of the storyline and writing. However, like has been said, the effects were awesome.

I enjoyed the filmed, or rather Depp's "creation" (Jack Sparrow). My only disappointment was that the other actors don't rise to the occasion. Bloom is just another pretty boy and Knightley, well...let's not go there.

I Loved it! It was fun! Entertaining! Amusing! Depp played Sparrow a bit swishier in this one-funny! Every time he ran, I fell over laughing. Keira's beautiful, she kicked some ass...very nice. Orlando has a very attractive back.
The movie had some great lines. I really enjoyed my 97 degree humid day in the A/C at the movies watching Johnny freakin' hot-ass Depp.

I guess I'm in the minority then...I liked it a lot. Sure it's two and a half hours, sure the plot is open ended, and they've already resorted to bringing characters back from the dead, but I don't care; I liked it.

Unlike Superman Returns, not once while I was watching Dead Man's Chest, did I wonder when the movie was going to end. Me and my uber-ginormous storage bin of popcorn was with the crew of the Black Pearl right up until the end.

In fact, there were only two things I disliked about this movie. One, they should have tried to explain why he who 'controls the chest, controls the sea' a bit better. Secondly, Orlando Bloom. In the first movie, he was kind of funny, but in the sequel his dial is apparently stuck on 'intense.'
