A Manga of Akira standards?

Im looking for a Manga of Akira standards.
I recently got Spirited Away & Blood which I thunk were really good but nothing since Akira has had such an effect.
Any Ideas?

Dave Sim's Cerebus

It's not japanese though, but the scope of that project is amazing.

As for honest to goodness manga.. check out the Dragonball and Dragaonball Z manga. I never in my life thought i would be typing that, but it's awefully long and very well done for the time it was published.

"LoneWolf and Cub" and "Blade the immortal" are both great works to check out as well. Almost anything that is loosley based off Jubei, or Yojimbo are going to be epic tales. The question i pose to you is ... are you talking about scope of story or sheer size/ length of the manga?

Im talking about animation quality, originality, epicness! etc..
Something thats gonna blow me away like Akira did!

Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind captures that epic feeling pretty well actually. It's not terribly long either, as far as long mangas go.

GHOST IN THE SHELL and NINJA SCROLL are some of my favourite Anime flicks, a lot of people will disagree with me but I found the STREET FIGHTER ALPHA Anime to be one of the mosty amazing films ever, the villain wasn't great but I loved Ryu's struggle with the Dark Hado (sp).

oh im sorry.. i thought you meant Manga.
Manga is the written pictures (books)
Anime is the moving pictures (video)

As far as epic movies.. Jin Roh, Metropolis, Ghost in the Shell, Most Studio Ghilbi movies..

There are lots of great Anime movies and series out there..as for series i'd reccomend Evangaleon, also if you can get past the inital cheesiness... Gundam. Be sure to start at the old ones and watch riiight up until G-Gundam..then quit.

I definitely second Ghost in the Shell and Ninja Scroll. Some others to consider:

Battle Angel
Castle of Caligristo (very funny, one of the best in the Lupin series)
Vampire Hunter D

i liked Street Fighter, Ninja Scroll, and Vampire Hunter D

Ooh, Battle Angel Alita is probably the most bad ass Manga series I've ever read.

Supradog 05-04-2003 06:19 PM

Aye, the battle angel alita manga is real good.
One of the few ones i've seen that really progresses and develops.

Berserk. Both the manga and the series are exquisite and as this is one that is still being published in Japan I type, you'll be able to keep up with new volumes as they come out domestically. (That or you could always go to http://www.cuppajoescoffee.com/manga/berserk.html for the fan-translated copies that are admittedly a bit jumbled at times.

I might spell this wrong

But:

Princess Monokoe

__

Ive not seen a lot of this stuff, I think Ive seen Spirited Away (loved it), Akira (thought it was good), Serial Experiment Lain (bloody good) and Princess Monokoe (the best in my opinion)

Its a relaly great story, and what a dame that princess is!

ratbastid 07-09-2008 11:30 AM

BIG second on Serial Experiments Lane. Slow and quiet, especially compared to Akira, but amazingly beautiful artwork and story. Don't get it if you require your anime to contain motorcycle chases.

If you like sci-fi-ish, try Cowboy Bebop: The Movie. Maybe not as good as Akira (what is?), but it might fill your void. It's based on the series of the same name, but I didn't watch that.

The movie has an awesome soundtrack.

If you want off-the-wall sci-fi, try FLCL. It's a short series and probably one of the best anime I've seen. (Though, admittedly, I haven't seen nearly enough.)

speshul-k 07-29-2008 09:31 AM

I thought the manga version of Akira was far superior to the actual anime.

Daemon1313 07-30-2008 10:32 AM

I was always a fan of the Urotsukidoji series. :paranoid:
