"Malibu Spring Break" -- one weird movie, 20 years out of date

The other night I taped a movie called "Malibu Spring Break" off cable. Looking at the title, the rating (TVMA) and the release date (2003) I figured it would be standard softcore fare like all the "Bikini" movies on Skinamax. Since I'm a sucker for images of naked or half naked images of women frolicking on a beach, I checked it out.

What it actually looked like was a drive-in teen beach movie from 20 or 30 years ago -- the kind of stuff that used to show up on "USA Network's Up All Night." Well, actually, I don't think they would have to cut NEARLY as much out of this film as they clearly needed to cut out of some of the flicks they showed on to make them cable-TV-safe. If you cut out a few moments of toplessness, it would just about have qualified as a 1960s beach movie.

But it clearly isn't one of those. And that's what's weird about the movie (it sure isn't the acting, scriptwriting or direction, which are all terrilby wooden and lame). I can't figure out who the heck the target audience was. It's way too tame for a 2003 softcore flick. It's way too voyueristic bikini babe oogling-oriented for a mainstream teen comedy. It's kinda like a drive-in sex comedy for teens, but there are no more drive-ins.

There were also some scenes of the protagonists, portrayed as wild-ass party girls on the prowl for men, acting "girly" in ways that would probably curl a feminist's lip and had me feeling oogy in a "this is way young for me" kinda way. :hmm:

All in all, a very weird film. I don't recommend watching it. But if anyone has seen it and has any idea what the filmmakers thought they were doing, I'd like to hear about it.
