Thundarr the Barbarian

Thundarr was cool. I just found this dedicated fan site and thought I'd post a few memories...

Thundarr the Barbarian was a half-hour Saturday morning cartoon show. The show takes place 2,000 years after the Earth was nearly destroyed by a runaway planet. The Earth is now populated by mutant monsters and is ruled by the 7 Citadels of Sorcery, a group of evil sorcerors who use a combination of magic and highly advanced technology to rule over the hapless populace.
The stories revolve around the trio of Thundarr, Ariel and Ookla, as they make their way through this world, defeating evil wherever they may find it, their motivation being that they themselves recently escaped the clutches of the vile sorcerer Sabien, Ariel's evil stepfather.

This world of the future is littered with half-destroyed 20th century relics, and many of the episodes take place in recognizable locales such as New York City or Mount Rushmore that have been changed in violent ways. Much of the show's humor revolves around the characters' relative lack of knowledge of our time period.

There are a few fan sites dedicated to Thundarr. One of which you can sign a petition for it's release on DVD:

Sweet. I will have to check it out. I sometimes call my kid Ookla the Mok. He and the wife have no idea as usual. . .

Star Wars set in a post-apocalyptic Earth, anyone?

Charlatan 03-05-2006 12:58 PM

Oh Man!

Now that is a blast from the past... I though I was the only one that called his kid Ookla.

I loved that show. I am known to still exclaim in joy, "Ariel, Ookla, RIDE!" to a majority of curious glances wonder what the heck I just said and why.
Another cartoon of my childhood revived through the internet boards!

When I was a teenager -after Thundarr was cancelled... Sometimes I would come across that half-assed rip-off "He Man". Where as Thundarr was plot based He-Man seemed to be based on Characters. Thus Skeletor was always laughing at stupid jokes.

I always wondered what happened to Thundarr and if he will ever get revenge on He-Man for stealing his haircut.

Damn, I remember that being the coolest Saturday morning cartoon EVER. Then a few years ago I saw the show and realized just how cheesy it really was. Oh well, I suppose I was the target audience when it was actually on.

Thundar was fantastic. It was a strange mash up of Conan and Star Wars. It fueled my love for post-apocalyptic wastelands.

my favorite episode was when they had the race and one vehicle looked like a scorpion, another a manta ray.. i think.. and one was like this huge wheel. totally cool show.

Ookla's been my TFP icon for years!

Greatest cartoon opening...ever!
[Opening title narration]
Narrator: The year, 1994. From out of space, comes a runaway planet, hurtling between the Earth and the moon, unleashing cosmic destruction. Man's civilization is cast in ruin. Two thousand years later, Earth is reborn. A strange new world rises from the old. A world of savagery, super-science, and sorcery. But one man bursts his bonds to fight for justice. With his companions, Ookla the Mok and Princess Ariel, he pits his strength, his courage, and his fabulous Sunsword, against the forces of evil. He is Thundarr, the Barbarian!

Useless trivia: Robert Ridgely the voice of Thundarr is also "The Colonel" from Boogie Nights!
Rather disturbing to hear Thundarr say:
Colonel: So, Jack tells me you've got a great big cock. May i see it. *pause as he looks down, looks up with sick smile* Thank you.
