The Libertine
I saw a trailer for this last nite and it looks like a must see...then I imdb'd it today and saw that its been a "work in progress" for a few years and some people have actually seen some cuts of it and evidently this is a US release thats coming out in 9 days (March 10th)
Has anyone seen any of the past showings of this. As its a Depp movie Im definately interested, enuff so that I will see it despite John Malkovich being in it (I cant stand that man!!). |
Malkovich was in the stage version at Steppenwolf several years back
|
So since Dave and I had the afternoon off, we went to see the first showing of the Libertine
I was sadly sadly disappointed it was so boring we left after an hour. I couldnt stay awake. I have never in my life walked out of a movie but I just couldnt take anymore of it. The score was annoying, the acting was horrible the dialog was choppy and watching it was painful as the lighting is SO dark (doesnt look at all as bright as it does on the tv commercials) Dont pay to see this at the theater, if you think you NEED to see it cause you're a Depp fan, wait til it comes out on DVD so you can pause it to take a nap |
Interesting... the reviews have been solid.
|
I havent read a review (locally) that had anything nice to say about it, which is why I figured I'd like it lol I never agree with the reviewers, sadly this time I did
this was the review from the big Atlanta paper Quote:
|
We saw it this afternoon before checking on reviews; our paper gave it one star out of four (I often disagree with the reviewer here, but one star is still iffy) I agree with Shani...we should have waited for DVD. A few people left the showing I attended.
My main problem was there was no point. Everything seemed so random and certain scenes seemed like they were thrown in just for hell of it, with no rhyme or reason. Save your money and wait if you still want to see it. |
Theives and fops. (?)..geez, it sounds like you were a tourist in lower San Francisco, near the Mission/Embarcadero district.
Sorry that the movie is such a disappointment. Johnny usually does better. Must be a "quick & dirty" contractual thing... And thanks, M' Lady ShaniFayre for warning us in advance. /I curtsey low/ |
hahahaha hunnychile, if I were in the movie I'd have pulled down my bodice and offered you a boob after that
|
Ha Ha! You are quite the Lady that knows so well! Best wishes from one of your Duchys on the West Coast.
Have you read "The Other Boleyn Girl" by Philippa Gregory? WOW, all i can say is wow!! And no wonder I'm having such fun this week! hunnchile. |
no I havent....I will go check it out and see why its so "wow" lol
|
I can't read, well I can read, but I hate reading... I just don't like reading that much is what I am trying to say... TV is stinks, but I cant get enough COPS on CourtTV. ITs a vice..

My gf and I saw this yesterday and I have to agree with everyone else. However, I would even go so far as to say that it's not even worth renting once it comes out on DVD. I was really disappointed becuase I usually like the movies Depp is in and think he picks interesting roles (although Secret Window was a slight disappointment). We snuck out of the theatre and into another movie becuase I felt ripped off. V for Vendetta made up for it.
The Libertine seemed to stray from the story line quite a bit and the movie as a whole was visually lacking. I also thought John Malcovich was less than Malcovich-like in the film. |
