Not for anime lovers Pimp, I personally have watced the Second Renaissance episodes and the Detective Story several x several times. This DVD is godly, Beyond rocks too. Wonder if they'll do anymore short films in the future, after or before Revolutions.

The thing is amazing. Some of the story's seem to made spefically to tie in to the movie's plot. They're still good, though.

Peter Chung's episode was awesome, as were Watanabe's. I wish that all of the storylines didn't hang so obviously off of plot elements of the original Matrix, but I really liked the shorts all the same.

Funny how people enjoy missing the point of what they see. Not to be incredibly rude, but there seems to be a great deal of philosophical aspects involved, and those are really what should be taken into consideration when determining if the Animatrix shorts are good or not. I watched them all, and I must say that "World Record" and "Beyond" are easily the best as far as philosophical context is concerned. Animatrix isn't meant to be another form of mindless entertainment that most of us are used to like football or just about any Hollywood movie.

Trouble is Stiltzkin that most people watch movies to have fun, not to be overwhelmed by philosophical statements. I on the other hand love and equal dose of both but do not have a particular preference (as long as neither is hokey).

If people wish to enjoy the Animatrix then let them, for the intellectually inclined such as yourself, study it. We all have our own unique ways of approaching film and general entertainment though the general concession is that we watch to be entertained, nothing more, nothing less.

Been wanting to rent it since I downloaded the four they had on the net. I don't want to buy it yet cuz I know they'll have some uber package once Revolutions comes out in November. For now I'll rent later I will buy. Glad to hear the rest of the shorts are as good as the few they put out on the net for free.

what are the "behind the scenes" like? i only have the svcd w/ the 9 shorts. a kids story was amazing graphically but story wise goes to renosance.

Reminded me of Heavy Metal cause of the shorts aspects w/ different drawing styles

I watched the whole thing beginning to end last night, having never seen any of them before.
That was some intense stuff. I don't think I'm in a hurry to watch The Second Renaissance any time soon. Actually was sick to my stomach, it was that powerful.
I was amazed at how much more effective the animated shorts were at conveying the key thoughts behind the Matrix than the movies have been. Extremely well done.

I have a question: How authoritative is the Animatrix? What I mean is how closely related to the Wachowski (sp?) Brothers are these episodes? Can we take what we take what we see in these films as "fact", or or they simply short stories "inspired" by The Matrix?

One thing that strikes me is the way certain details don't seem to match the film. In the 1st Morpheus said (correct me if I'm worng) that history of the war between man and machine was very patchy, and that they were unsure of who struck the first blow. The second renaissance shows that they have a detailed account of what happened (how!?) and that humans struck first.
He also claims that the EMP is the only weapon that they have against the Sentinels, In The Last Flight of the Osiris we see them attacking the Sentinels with guns.
One other thing is that in Osiris, it is claimed that Zion is 4 miles below the surface of the earth, now while this is more believeablle from a physical point of view, its hardly "close to the earth's core", unless of course Dozer (I think) was talking in a relative way, meaning closer to the earths core than the surface.
Other minor details seep through the stories, just wondering how "seriously" to take them?

These are all very good questions. First of all all of the episodes were written or co-written by the Wachowskis so they do in fact reflect their vision of the Matrix universe.

Second Renaissance is refered to as an entry in the Zion records, it could be that Morpheus hasn't the clearance to view these hence his confusion as to the fate of humanity prior to being plugged.

Though they have live rounds that can attack the sentinels these only damage them moderately, the EMP is the only powerful weapon that can actually incapacitate a sentinel or any machine for that matter.

The chances are that the point at which they were digging was already a deep ditch, and from the footage of the machines digging it almost looks like they are inside the earth.

That's my take on it, could be wrong.

My favorite short on there was "Kid's Story", just because of the animation. The way it distorted and twisted as he skateboarded made it look like he was going really really fast.

I had it in my hand yesterday. Almost so close. But then I spotted Dark City and thought, damn now thats a good sci-fi flick. I put Animatrix down and grabbed this classic.

It's a movie about the people who live in a world created by these other people and ..... wait a second that sounds just like the matrix.... ducks

No seriously. Dark City rocks. If you haven't seen it get it, if you have then you know what I'm talking about.

seems like an employee was hiding it ...hmmm...

Anywho the behind teh scenese parts are pretty neat. Interviews with the directors and authorities in Matrix lore. Also Eric Nakamura from Giant Robot makes an appearance..so I was very pleased.

The animatrix eps all tie in and kindof explain The Matrix, like i think "World Record" explains that if you use your body to it's maximum potential you're reborn. And the one with the kids playing in the house explains the gliches' in the matrix..
Well that's what some guy told me I think..

I found it quite freaky though, but a good watch I guess

Here's the one thing that bothered me a little bit:

In Final Flight of the Osiris they say that Zion is 4 kilometers under where the machines are digging. That makes 4000 meters.

In Reloaded they say that the machines are digging at the rate of 100 meters an hour and are already 2 kilometers down. They also say that they have 72 hours before the machines get there.

Does anyone else see a problem here?

Still haven't found the DVD anywhere over here... dammit. I just watched The Second Renaissance again, it's absolutely beautiful. I was disgusted, moved and intruiged - the moment that human soldier is held up to the sky by a Machine and sees a nuclear missile detonate just fucking blew me out of my chair. I need to find this DVD fast.

World Record was definitely one of the better episodes. If you push your body to the edge, like you said, you raise your vitals so high with your "matrix body" that you "physical body" is forced to literally wake-up out of the matrix. Incredible concept.

"Kid's Story" was great especially the ironic dialogue at the end.

"Beyond" still has my senses reeling.

"Detective Story" is beautifully animated (I guess they all are) but I really like the collage-style animation of that episode.

And "Osiris" is a hell of a thrill ride. The close-ups in CG of the characters kept my jaw-dropping. Some of the exterior shots looked as good as the movie. I'm very pleased with the DVD as a whole
