Microfinance, anyone into it ?
hey all. so I've seen something on TV about this, probably on PBS or ? I can't remember.
but I just got this email from Pay pal about this...linkage https://www.microplace.com/ so what do you all think ? what I think (about the concept anyway) is, well if I lost my $20 or whatever, at least I'd know some rich fuck wasn't betting that whatever he sold me as a great investment would totally fail at the same time he's telling me what a great opportunity it was. I don't invest anything, I just save my cash. I just don't trust anyone. but I like the idea behind this. so I just thought I'd post it up and see what some of you have to say. anyone here get the same email from PayPal ? |

I've never heard of such a project recruiting and rewarding individual investors. I have heard of non-profit projects where the NGO acts as a regular lender, lending small amounts of credit. It has proven extremely successful, in that 90% of loans are repaid plus interest.
I would be wary of a lender operating in this manner however, it seems off, but you may want to do your research.

It seems like an interesting business model. If you get lots of different investors to 'donate'/'invest' a small amount of money, you could do more than if they tried to do it alone.
I would look into the administration costs, but I think it could work. |

I haven't used any real microfinance systems like Kiva. I have helped out individuals last year via Modest Needs. They use a microfinance model to help out the distressed, and money never goes directly to the individual but to those who have outstanding debts with that individual. Each case is vetted out and money is sent directly to the bank, hospital, etc.
