two newest paintings.

the first is of charles mingus that i painted for my dear. haha, i have a really bad hunch he's not a fan of it, and i'm tempted to just spraypaint all over it.
first painting ive ever felt negative towards.
though, the picture i used is only black and white. i added the colour to reflect how i view mingus.
i've always thought of him as a very sadistic and drug worn person, so i added blues around his eyes and on the left side of the bass. his music, though, is incredbly passionate and filled with unwavering energy. i showed this with the red on his hands and on the right side of the bass. to sort of show the two clashing sides that somehow seem to work.

the second i finshed quite recently. it's sort of an ode to my favourite graffiti artist banksy. i put some of my favourite pieces of his together, as well as his manifesto, and added the lichtenstein "BLAM!" moreso for effect. i feel like it isn't finished yet. i do want to add some tags in strategic places, but i'm an absolutey horrid at writing tags. i really love the idea of incorporating other artists with exceptional talents and getting them to write their tags on it.
but that would probably take a very long time to happen.

constructive criticism?

I like them both. There's powerful energy in both. The first is so evocative and strong but sad. The second seems very familiar to me for some reason. Nicely done, Chelsea.

Both are wonderful.

I love your choice of red frames.

I recognized Mingus right away. I got that pic of him in a book. Looks great. The blue & red effect brings subtle emotion into the painting.

Banksy! He seems like a pretty cool brit, God knows I've read enough articles about him. Didn't know he did the cover of Blur's CD though. Very cool, I like the composition, I am not sure about the blue sky though. Still nice.

Keep painting and keep posting chelsea!

actually... since my dear is now my ex dear... and he has yet to ever see the physcial painting, i'm going with one of two options:

1] the over-dramatic, leaving it on his doorstep
2] burning it.

Fuck that.
Keep it for yourself.

I like the way you've done the hand, but the mouth chin area needs fixing I think?...

No way you should destroy it, it's got a soulful vibe to it. :)

Nice work!

I really like your homage to Banksy. (he's one of my favorites, too)

I feel hurt for you ... I hope I'm not reading too much into your "story." When I create something for someone I care about it's carved from a piece of myself ... When they don't or can't appreciate it anymore it hurts in so many ways ...

I think you ought to give your paintings away to someone (other than your stupid ex) who likes them - even a perfect stranger. I keep none of my own work and it feels obscene to sell them - so I always give them away.

One of the key instructors in my life was someone who taught a class on nudes in his studio/home in San Francisco. He taught me that "hoarding" my work is like dead-weight ... it would keep me from creating more. He was so right ... The experience for me is in the creation of each piece - after I am done I believe each piece belongs to the world.

So give it away and try not to look back on your work - let it live only in your memory.

When you liberate your work you'll feel that inspiration to create more will find you in no time ...

Your paintings are beautiful - give them to a stranger and be happy to know you have given someone pleasure.
