My first painting on TFP
I have been dabbling in painting for a few years now. I don't spend too much time on it. I just wait until I get some inspiration and paint something. I had a few more, but I guess they didn't make the last move. This is one I call 'Self-Image'. It is done with acrylic paints. Any feedback is welcomed as I am teaching myself.

Some of the best artists I know were self taught, so I say "go for it". Acrylics are good/great flexible paints because you can use them to look like oil paintings (thick and textured) or like water colors with several layers of transparent color. In this piece, I see someone who wants to show many sides to who he is. That's a good true start. Keep painting and look at a lot of different artists studies & perhaps include more shading and dept of perception. ...Or not, it's your baby. I say this with much respect. I paint - always have. And I taught art, so I have seen all the styles, they evolve as they must. You could make a series.....that moves forward from this beginning painting and show a progression into who you are or what seems most symbolic for where you sit and view your life or life in general. We artists can always add some other dimension and it appears that you are quite ready for the next step. Shading to show volume is good, but also perhaps you feel an inclination toward color field and that's a nice approach also. Show us more. The fact that you Are painting is a magical movement. I studied painting for years and now I'm doing stuff that's just all emotion & abstract. It's way harder than I ever thought it would be. Go with the flow and do what you need or desire to do.
More soon please. ![]() Show another piece soon. I'll be here with nothing but positive feedback. We artists are a special class of folk. Go baby go.... In all ways forward and with true emotion.

if you're self-taught, you don't want to hear from us.
then you'll be us-taught. ![]() it seems as thought your work is tiny. or you have a very large chair on which to photograph it. i prefer to work larger. more room for the physical aspect self epxression. but i've also been told that this "size obsession is a man thing" so take that for what it's worth. i'd say try a bunch of different sizes to see what you like. just keep doing what feels right.

thats awesome! especially if your teaching yourself!
i think it'd be interesting to see a painting of yours that focuses more on a larger object, than the background.

Chelsea,
That's my problem that I'm trying to work on. I always make the main focus too small. slowly but surely I will get it figured out. Thanks for the comments!
