my recent drawings - Updated (08-02-2008)

So, I have recently been asked to make an illustration for a book of love poems and I'd like your opinions on some of the pieces I've done. I'll try and find the poem in English for you and post it later.

Ok this poem isn't an actual poem, it's a chapter in the Bible called Song of Songs or Song of Solomon. I think it's rather beautiful. Among other things it makes reference to lovers (a metaphor for God and Israel apparently) and also to pomegranates, doves and other things I tried to include in my drawings.

Here is an excerpt:

"1 Behold, you are beautiful, my love, behold, you are beautiful! Your eyes are doves behind your veil. Your hair is like a flock of goats, moving down the slopes of Gilead. 2 Your teeth are like a flock of shorn ewes that have come up from the washing, all of which bear twins, and not one among them is bereaved. 3 Your lips are like a scarlet thread, and your mouth is lovely. Your cheeks are like halves of a pomegranate behind your veil. 4 Your neck is like the tower of David, built for an arsenal, whereon hang a thousand bucklers, all of them shields of warriors. 5 Your two breasts are like two fawns, twins of a gazelle, that feed among the lilies. 6 Until the day breathes and the shadows flee, I will hie me to the mountain of myrrh and the hill of frankincense. 7 You are all fair, my love; there is no flaw in you. 8 Come with me from Lebanon, my bride; come with me from Lebanon. Depart from the peak of Ama'na, from the peak of Senir and Hermon, from the dens of lions, from the mountains of leopards. 9 You have ravished my heart, my sister, my bride, you have ravished my heart with a glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace. 10 How sweet is your love, my sister, my bride! how much better is your love than wine, and the fragrance of your oils than any spice! 11 Your lips distil nectar, my bride; honey and milk are under your tongue; the scent of your garments is like the scent of Lebanon. 12 A garden locked is my sister, my bride, a garden locked, a fountain sealed. 13 Your shoots are an orchard of pomegranates with all choicest fruits, henna with nard, 14 nard and saffron, calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense, myrrh and aloes, with all chief spices-- 15 a garden fountain, a well of living water, and flowing streams from Lebanon. 16 Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind! Blow upon my garden, let its fragrance be wafted abroad. Let my beloved come to his garden, and eat its choicest fruits. "

Just my opinion.... but what the hell do i know.

I really like the third for the cover, more like passion then love but what better love then a passion driven one. All 3 are amazing. I am facinated by that which I cannot do..... and I couldn't draw a stick figure to save my life. keep up the great work, you have real talent and emotion by my eyes. and not for nothing but is there a boobie in the second pic? Sorry.

thanks for the positive comments everyone.

I made these in a mixture of materials, they're all done on paper (pretty heavyweight stuff to cope with thick paint), and I used watercolours, coloured pencils, oil pastels, gloss paint, matt paint, spray varnish and charcoal! A real mish-mash but there you go!

thanks again!

"your teeth are like a flock of shorn ewes..."

for some reason, that part made me laugh.
i think sheep are just funny.

my own immaturity aside,
i can see why you like this passage.
the love and devotion are beautifully stated.

great work all around.
here's a thought that might make it even greater.
just my opinion, so take it at a mere suggestion.

what got me most was the repetition of "behind your veil"
i think this is a line worth emphasis in the drawings.
the first drawing does a great job of it....
the figures behind "the veil" of text and blackness.
the other two seem to lack this depth.
perhaps it could be something as simple
as a translucent tissue paper.
or a very light watercolor wash.

if you do continue on with the series,
please share your progress.

They're so passionate and warm and have that whole "dangerous but warm" feel to them. I especially love the first.

I like the third one, but the second one is my favorite. The second one seems to be deeper, which is how I think of poetry. I think that the third one would be good also, but the top seems more abstract and the couple is a little too realistic for the flow. However they are all three wonderful and I can tell you are very talented!

I LOVE how you added barely visible text to each painting. It adds a layer of goodness to each painting. In the second painting, the circular thing just looks cool. I don't know what it is, but it just looks great.

They're wonderful... what saddens me is that others here straightaway talk about their inability to be artists... we all create art, it's just different that's all... once you find the right style and medium.. I bet you can create something from the heart and your own mind's eye that's wonderful..

So nyeah

thanks for the positive feedback. So, to give you some more insight on my work, I have been trying to get back on my feet in terms of my artwork during this year, I had been taking a looong break before that, for several personal reasons, including doubting entirely whether it was worthwhile to continue being/ trying to be an artist. Currently my job doesn't allow me to do as much as I'd like...

This piece is entirely hand drawn/painted, there is no digital imaging though I did take some inspiration from images of different elements that I researched. My work is about communication, or more about the inability to communicate. I want it to transmit anxiety, as if the piece itself is trying to burst into communication, like it has a life of it's own. My images emerge from darkness as it is, for me, an intimate colour, of privacy and intimacy, and the red signifies passion and determination. I write in my pieces, words and phrases that make sense, but that are not readabel as they are all superimposed on each other so you can only read fragments. It is a visual representation of my thought, my thoughts to me appear in a visual field that is black and they come very fast and I can barely "listen" to one before another one appears. There are people living inside my canvases, personifications of the canvases and the meaning I want each one to convey. The appearance of water is a new element for me, but I love it's clearness amidst the darkness of the other elements, it's pure but also it breaks the silence so to speak - the canvas is screaming inside but can't get through....the moving water breaks the stillness.

So...please let me know what you think of my ideas, I love input, it helps be have even more new ideas!

Your art is truly amazing, and I'm wholly jealous of your ability to create such emotional, evocative pieces with a sense of movement without losing the representational parts of your ideas.

i think of your work often,
as i drive by a shop called Tipler's Lamp Shop
that's very near my house.

it's an old antique lamp shop,
a place that sells items with history.
and i can see in your work
layer upon layer of narrative,
capturing histories in a single complex image.

thank you for sharing.

thanks for all the positive feedback guys. doodlebird, I like your analogy about layers of history...

in a sense it's part of what I'm trying to create in my work, a sense of more than just the immediate moment captured in the image, the layers give it depth and the characters are almost living for me, they have a history...

you've got my brain going, thank you! I could ramble on but I'll spare you, but this just gave me some new ideas.

Hey guys, thought it was time to post more things in here!

just to answer some previous questions, the last two works are larger than they appear here...by quite a bit.

My medium is mixed (like mixedmedia! :P). I like to mix things up to obtain different and exciting results.

So, these drawings are a little different though I'd say they are in keeping with previous ones to some degree. The ideas are similar anyway.

Good news is, some of these will be in a show later this year and also will be published in a book!

I really like the new stuff you've posted (well, I like all of your work here too)! I just love the peeled away / layer aspect. And the hand silhouettes are amazing, as they take a minute to see (I didn't even really see them until I looked closely at the last one). Great job! and congrats on getting your work published and in a show!
