Window, Door, Toilet

I thought I would share a few of my old drawings with you all. The perspective is a little skewed but all I had to work with was a felt pen, and I'm too impatient to redo a drawing if it doesn't work the first time around. Anyway, I figured these might offer a view of life most of you won't get the opportunity to see. I hope not anyway.

First, my window, 9-18-96.

Wow, that's nice styling, Squishor. What kid of pen do you use? I love the fact that it looks like it was running out, it's made the wood grain nice and graded.

Thanks!

I was using whatever the shitty county issue pen is they give you in jail. I would carefully hoard them until they started to get low on ink so I could do shading. It was a trick to get them to that point without the tip getting mashed down.

It's all metal and concrete, no wood there at all.

Oops, sorry! Let me amend and say the texture of the surfaces is very well handled.

Your sense of light and shade is fantastique. I especially like the door handle on the second picture.

I trust you're still drawing?

Sadly, I haven't done much drawing for a while now. Somehow I just seemed to have a lot more time on my hands back then, ya know?

Thinking about it, the cup and spoon were actually plastic, and the soap dish to the left of the sink was actually a plastic ice cream dish. Plus the paper bag. Nothing smaller could be metal, for obvious reasons I suppose.

Bernadette, that country club was as bad or worse than the pictures convey. You can see in the second picture that the toilet faces the door, which had a window in it so people could look in on you while you were doing what used to be private bodily functions. You learn to discard that whole "privacy" notion right away.

I was looking at that and thinking what was Squish doing in jail? That is some weird looking bathroom... Then I read on and Squish was in jail.

1) Excellent drawings I really got a feeling for the sparseness and cold.
2) What were you in for?

Well, that time I was in for a probation violation. I got reclassified to minimum security (where they have real doorknobs) about 3 months later. In the meantime I scrawled "Une Saison en Enfer" on my cell wall and played the tormented intellectual.

I should make time for drawing. It would help if I spent less time on the internet, of course. I'm trying to start up a revival of my creative side right now, hence the posts here and in Photography, plus the fledgling journal.

The light reflecting on the floor in the second picture is so well done. You are really good at shading with lines like that.

Thank you! I had a drawing teacher who wouldn't let us use pencils.
