more coaster designs
Inspired by our weekly assignments here on TFP, I am churning out drawings to be made into coasters.
I am drawing the designs on thick paper, and coating it with a clear acrylic. I then affix the paper to cork with a spray glue, and cut the whole disc out with a bandsaw. Next, I pour a clear resin on top, allow it to harden, then smooth out the edges with a grinder. You can see a couple of the designs in the last picture are already coated with resin. I think I'll do a bunch more soon. When you said "coasters," I thought you meant roller coasters. I'm looking at this stuff thinking, "how in the world does he plan on doing THAT?" But, now I get it...cool stuff.

Awesomeage Clavus,
I really like the bird on the periscope :D |
Thanks, all.
The idea to make coasters came to me when I stood in my garage with a slab of cork in my hand and asked myself, "What can I do with this?" then I glanced over at the bottle of clear resin, then over to my bandsaw... Sorry, Nancy. The fish goes with the octopus and bird. They are 3/4 of the set destined for my friend out here in California. |
Clavus, I love 'em. I'm working on a set of coasters myself, but mine are being made out of maple and walnut. I'll have to post some pics when I'm done.
