New 3D Work

Just finished this today for work

It's a space station being developed now to go up in like 2011 or something like that.

splendid work!

I've never used any 3D software yet so I was just wondering how you make shadows? Does it automatically cast a shadow of the object you're making or do you have to make that on your own as well?

Dant0007: I work for a privately funded portion of a university doing nasa stuff for presentations.

thriolith / werneron: That's all done in maya.

Nancy: The shadows are based upon the lights in the scene.

Thanks for the kind words

Looks great! I like how clean it is.

However, unless I'm mistaken, your lighting is coming from the above right in the scene. It's making the lighting on the earth strange even though your model has great lighting. If I were to do it, I would probably render the earth and satellite seperately with unique lighting on both. That way you could get the earth lit up more for the amount of light you have on your satellite without washing out the detail on the satellite.

btw: you guys hiring? Maya artist here in need of work...

no hiring here that I know of, nor do they even pay all that well to begin with

The earth is lit seperately, but only with like 4 - 6 lights. It could probably use more work. I did light linking so the earth's lights don't effect the model and the model's lights don't effect the eart.

Excellent picture. I think I can see my house from there.

I'd be very interested in seeing any other works that you have to share.
