ART Mid-Period Work

This thread has work that I did subsequent to the Early Work in the previous thread:
ART Early Work
...the work here, called "Mid-Period" preceeds my current work:
ART New Work

During the late 80s in NYC, I did the maps and globes in this thread and the drawings here were done in the late 90s in Japan and Thailand.

The first four remind me of looking out the window at trees on a winter night and seeing faces and figures among the twigs and branches. Cool stuff, ART!

With a mustache, the cool factor would be too much

Very nicely done, ART.
The first four remind me of tattoos I saw on a special about the Polynesian peoples in the South Pacific, in particular the Maoris.

What type of tool did you use for the dots, if you don't mind saying?

Thanks folks!

The early drawings were done with technical drawing pens but these were done with ultra fine point Sharpies, as we were travelling and mechanical pens and ink are somewhat cumbersome.

THe orbs are fantastic. Im intrigued everytime I see an image where I'm left wondering what kind of medium was used and if any software enhanced it.

Can you share how these were created? I understand if youd rather keep that part to yourself.

Bravo!

No software.
They're just photographs of painted spherical surfaces.
Thanks, Sun Tzu.

I fairly enjoy your work Art. For some reason I find it restful to look at these pieces..

have you put some of them up on your wall?

Nancy, they're all over the place. There are many large-scale canvases, as well - up to 30 feet in length.

flyman, always appreciate your presence and witness.

Glad to hear that. They are far to great to be put away

wow. 30 feet! where in the world do you have them?

i'm thinking, Art, that some of your pieces could be marketed as wonderful wallpaper designs or something!
beyond your typical predictable paisley yknow.
how cool would that be to see your work covering walls?
it's patterns, but it's not.

or maybe you could put together a book of your works?

bernadette, after graduate school, I made a living as a “gallery artist” and my work was sold to collectors and corporations. One day, I happened to be in the main lobby of the Bank of America building in San Francisco and saw a large painting of mine on display. It was particularly alienating to see it in a decorative corporate setting.

In another similar instance I was traveling across the US by car. I stopped in at a gallery in Texas that was hosting a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution, entitled "Paper as Medium". Some of my work was in it and it was another alienating experience for me. It really had very little to do with me at that point and everything to do with the new contexts the work was existing in.

Later, after I moved east, and had additional experiences like these, I stopped exhibiting my work after my first one-person show in New York City. I also severed my connections to the “art world” at that time. Since then, I show work only on the Net in basically anonymous settings. It seems to suit me. I suppose it is because I prefer an essentially conceptual reading of the work and I think it’s possible to contextualize it in ways that interest me. I also destroy a lot of work after it hangs around for a while.

Thanks for your comments. I’ll see what happens with this new series. I do rethink my options as time goes on.
