old paintings / mixed media

inspired by the great work of the fellow tfp-ers,
i went digging and found these REALLY crappy old digital photos
of some artwork that i remember fondly.
sorry i don't have better photos.
the camera was new about 8 years ago.
digital cameras have come a long way since then.

enjoy,
and i'd love to hear the comments.

very nice paintings doodlebird! I particularly like the one with the "red man" and the one after that. So fascinating pieces they are.

Do any of these have a title?

Great energy and loads of ideas here. Did you ever think of developing them further? They look very personal and intriguing.

those are great :) It's so interesting the pictures that come from each person's imagination :)

the "red man" is my shadow. i painted with a light behind me and really just traced my shadow onto the canvas. the cat in the car is daniel, hello kitty's boyfriend. and the unreadable text on the left was some jeanette winterson quote from "written on the body" i've forgotten which one (which is either meaningless or mysterious) but it's an amazing read. i recommend it. (the book, not my painting)

and yes, a couple of them do have titles. the one with the four mini canvasses running down the left side is called "can i bum a smoke?" and the mostly blue one, the last one is called "we got ideas." i took the line from the pixies' "u-mass." and the portraits are taken from an old ali mcbeal tv guide cover, stilla cosmetics, disney's pocohantas concept art, some girl from my college, and a note i wrote to someone at work.

And finally, Lewis, i've tried taking them further, and i only seem to mess them up. there's something i like about the unfinished quality. almost like sketches on canvas. there's that, and i have a reeeeally short attention span.

perhaps we should all follow skier's lead and post more of our sketch books??

doodlebird, i really like your collage sort of style!
love the tiny paintings placed on top your larger paintings.

as much as i appreciate photo realism (& have done plenty enough myself), i truly love abstract painting way more.

the only thing i don't like is "flesh" color paint.
that color should not be sold in a tube. it should be outlawed...
...forcing everyone to mix your own colors.

i love the last crop of your first painting.

I love it - wish I could see it "live"

Thanks for saying that. You're right and I should know better. You've been brave enough not to try to 'tidy up', but leave them with the raw passion and intuitive feeling they came from. I think they're great.

Great idea to post sketch books. They often carry a much deeper, more personal message that isn't inhibited by clumsy attempts to make 'great art'.

You've inspired me!

Hello DB!

There are so many little details that I like that it has been hard to put my comments down. It's the little things like the can that says "tin," Castro, the fish swimming out of the picture, etc. You like the ladies. They appear in someway in every piece.

You have wetted my appetite.
