Skier's Daily Sketchbook

Every artist must have a starting point. This is mine.

I've wanted to draw well since the end of my senior year of high school (it's been over a year since then) but have made relatively little progress to those ends, mostly because of lack of effort. I have started this thread because from today on, I will be posting 1 drawing per day, every day. If I miss a day, that drawing will have to carry on to the next day. There are no quality criteria or minimum time spent on these sketches, because I think i'll skip drawing if I feel pressured to maintain a minimum standard. I just want to get into the ritual of daily practice.

So, to kick things off, I present to you "Ball":

Keepin it simple. This is a scraper thing I have. I figure life studies are going to help me out the most in the long run.

I don't think I got the blade right. Seems to be pointing up on the right side. What did I do wrong?

kurty[B] 08-16-2004 12:30 AM

fantastic drawings skier, I admire your ambition! The handle on the blade might not be perfect, but those little intricacies and imperfections is what makes art (anything) beautiful. Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see what else you create!

Maybe your work will help motivate me to get off my ass and do some drawings of my own, i've been out of practice for far too long.

Imperfection IS perfection. I once saw an interview with a Danish painter who said that if you copied a subject perfectly it would become imperfect. But if you copied it imperfectly it would become perfect. After years of drawing I've come to realize that it's true..

very impressive drawings skier - especially the little details!

doodlebird 08-16-2004 07:41 AM

beautiful stuff. i too admire your amibtion.

what medium?

skier 08-16-2004 10:45 PM

My inebriation seems to have affected my visual acuity. I have decided to draw two pictures tommorow instead.

(I hope that sounded smart)

bernadette 08-17-2004 12:28 AM

hi skier. those are nice.
good for you setting the goals. be gentle with yourself. life sometimes gets in the way. but i applaud you for setting yourself a plan.

what application did you use?

Didn't get a chance to do a drawing on my computer. Did a picture of a chair in pencil while waiting for my sister in a lobby. I don't have a scanner, so a webcam pic will have to do.

2 drawings still need to be done for tommorow.
Berny- i've been using OpenCanvas2 for my drawings.
Doodlebird- I switch from using the paintbrush tool to the pencil tool randomly. heh I hope that somewhat answered your question. Can I say I use a digital medium? not sure.

Great stuff Skier!

Keep them coming.
This thread is going to be cool in a year.

Consider me a fan,

Lewis 08-18-2004 03:08 PM

Skier! Brilliant. That's the only way tro learn to draw. I'm going to have to get that kind of discipline together. Thanks for the inspiration!!!!

Great stuff.

skier 08-19-2004 08:48 AM

i've been lagging behind because i've been tryign to keep a standard of drawing quality. No longer. I need to keep this going, or I might abadon it completely. 3 drawings today.

bem69 08-19-2004 10:21 PM

Excellent work skier, I use opencanvas myself. :)

yesterday's half-finished drawing. it's about 1 1/2 hours work. Forcing myself to draw has been an interesting experience. When I used to draw it was only when I need a creative outlet of sorts. Kind of like it would build up in me until I did something creative, at which point I would think myself spent and could not draw anymore. Today i'll do something simpler hopefully get it all done.

Nancy 08-22-2004 02:18 AM

Ugh - the ultimative test of one's drawing skills is always to draw a chair. Yours looks pretty damn nifty Skier! :D

skier 08-22-2004 03:20 PM

fear not, my sketchbook has not been abandoned. Although it may seem I am 5 drawings behind, I actually have them in my sketchbook (the offline, paper one) and as soon as I can get a way to upload them I shall. Perhaps my next will be digital.

skier 08-24-2004 12:32 AM

might as well stick this in the sketchbook, this is a fruminous bandersnatch.

Ok ok got tired of not posting pics. The following are crappy webcam pics of stuff that i've done in school, in my sketchbooks, etc.
Some of the better works took a few days of effort
Wish I could show you guys some stuff i've done around town, but I don't think it'd be a good idea.

and another! OMGWTF!!11

The solid colors one i photochopped is based on a drawing I did when looking at a rollercoaster. I felt I got the expression of growth I saw in the tubular construction, but did so poorly in my opinion and so i fooled around with it in photoshop till it looks like it does now. Which is that I'm happy with it.

Last photo is one of the amazing abilities of my (and probably everyone else's) webcam.

doodlebird 09-12-2004 08:10 PM

hmm... stuff around town sounds intriguing. you don't have to show any of YOUR stuff. you could show stuff that you've SEEN... no idea who did it... right?

skier 09-12-2004 09:38 PM

It's not that my GOOD FRIENDS might use my pictures of other people's stuff here for evidence, but that they could get a lot of info about those people that would make an arrest that much easier. Call it crazy or paranoid, but i'm sure those people are scared of jail time and would like to minimize the chance of being caught.

skier 09-12-2004 11:44 PM

Disaster!!! I was about to upload today's stuff (me making a character) but yesterday's update seems to have done in my camera. El Kaputo. New webcam? Digicam? Scanner?
hmmmm...
If you guys know of a >50$ price range camera/scanner tell me!

skier 09-13-2004 02:20 PM

Photo manipulation. Will be stencilled. I'm not sure if I got the "butterfly" feeling into this. Once the stencil is done i'll fade and underspray the outside of the "wings" to get some motion into the piece.

http://www.filespace.org/Barewren/butterfly.jpg

Throwing out a different version. Tell me which one you like best

Tried something called oekaki to draw this. It's like a glorified version of MSpaint.
Large influence on this drawing from ConceptArt. Man some guys on there are just awesome.

pretty sweet. to me it's a little reminiscient of Return of the Jedi's Rancor Monster. no?

understood. i'd like to see a "graffiti art around town" thread. hopefully i'll have one in the next few days over in the photog section.

KellyC 09-19-2004 03:17 PM

I like how varied your art subjects are, very cool. Keep up the good work.

Y2KDREAD 09-22-2004 12:06 AM

That's a lot of cool stuff you have drawn, I wish i could draw.

Lasereth 09-23-2004 07:59 PM

I'd like to say i've been super busy with schoolwork, but i can't. lol. Just went into an art funk- doing an update now though with stuff i've done in the meantime.

The first is a half-done girl for lineart practice. Still having trouble with hands- gave up on the project when I got the hands approx. right

Second is drawing i did in class when i should have been listening to the prof.

Third is a character i've been developing. Lost the development sheet- this is 3rd or 4th gen. of the character. Starting to lose it's rigidness, gettin some funk in him. (it's a panda)

Last one is me experimenting with lettering style. There was no aim for consistency through the piece.

KinkyKiwi 11-18-2004 05:52 PM

oh wow..amazing stuff

i especially love the cowboy beebop tribute :) i think thats where that guys from right?

If you want to continue using it for digital media, get a digi SLR. You can get a secondhand one pretty cheap now and use older autofocus lenses.

The newer DigiSLRs are upping the ante with higher res, and more shots stored before the memory buffer fills, but I get the idea you'll be focussing on the more still life side of things than action shots.
