Woodworking an "art"?

Here's a table I made for my dog's food/water bowls...

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/comeonfhqwhgads/table.jpg

I recessed the footprint of each bowl about 1/8" so that the bowl sits snugly in the top. The bone shaped legs were just a fun touch... whaddya think?

marsfyre 09-23-2003 07:57 PM

bangin table man!!! I'm not sure if it counts as art but why not? ^__^'

agentsmith 09-23-2003 09:07 PM

heh, cute.

my dog has the exact same water feeder thing. cept he's a wuss and won't drink from it because it makes gurgling sounds.

EeOh1 09-23-2003 09:08 PM

Oh, wow. Very cool. My dogs' dishbowl holders are made to look like the dogs themselves...of course I didn't do it.

Handyman!

peeweesbigbong 09-23-2003 09:54 PM

OF COURSE ITS ART!!!!!!

anytime you express yourself in something creativly you are being artistic!

I mean seriously, why go out and buy something you can make eh?

good job. is that just clear coated or do you plan on putting a stain on it?

I put a couple of coats of indoor/outdoor urethane on it to seal it. He's a bit blind and has a tendency to nudge the bowl when he finds it, so I wanted to make it resistant to spills. I tend to steer away from coloring the wood...I like the natural finishes. The urethane I picked left a bit of an amber tint though, and I'm not sure that I like it...

analinguist 09-24-2003 04:49 AM

made me laugh.. good stuff.

Astrocloud 11-04-2003 11:22 PM

way cool photo man.

krwlz 12-01-2003 07:50 AM

Nice man. Cool table.

And of course its art! My father and I have built a few strip-built canoes. Perhaps Ill post a picture or two.

If anyone told me those wernt art, I think Id flip.

Anything you envision and create can be art.

Jack Ruby 12-06-2003 12:58 PM

That table = coolness.

herostar 12-06-2003 02:46 PM

I like it, it's cool

Hercules 12-08-2003 07:24 PM

Looks cool, good theme, easy to identify.

What kind of wood is it made of?

The top is made of 1/2 inch plywood and 1/4 inch luan... the sides are made of yellow pine. (cheap and plentiful) I just recently started using more exotic woods...mahogany and walnut. Perhaps I'll post a couple of pics of those projects.

uber1 12-09-2003 02:14 PM

i think it is art... some of the woodcarvings i've seen are amazing.

good job on the dog table. :)

Spire 12-09-2003 09:40 PM

MacGnG 12-27-2003 01:20 PM

bernadette 12-28-2003 03:43 PM

cute doggie, too :)

hotzot 12-31-2003 10:54 AM

what a cute doggie! nice table too!

zaiaz 01-15-2004 02:09 PM

Man!!! That must be one lucky dog. A manmade table all to him/her? self. Very nice and the leg bones give it character.

Did you also make the water and food dishes? I have never seen anything like those before.

The dog is very pampered, I agree. I bought the water and food dishes at PetSmart awhile ago. My mom wanted a table for her dogs too, so I ended up making her one for xmas.

Thanx for the compliments all!

Love the idea of routing out the outline of each bowl. May create one simliar to yours, if you do not mind. How did you connect the bone legs to the table?

I tried using a router the first time, but found it difficult. For this one I took a piece of 1/4" luan and used a scroll saw to cut the footprint of the bowls into it. Then I attached the legs to a piece of 1/2" plywood using screws, and glued the luan to the top of that (hiding the screws). I finished the edges with some scrap pine that I had.

Feel free to use the design. Lemme know if you need any further clarifications...

Arbiestsheft04 02-05-2004 03:13 PM

fhqwhgads , have you done any lathe work? I'm an avid turner and find that the lathe grants more artistic liberty than flat work. I primarily turn bowls and hollow vessels, though spindle work is satisfying. I would post a couple pics but my digi cam is less than cooperative with my new computer.

fhqwhgads 02-05-2004 07:07 PM

I would love to turn, but I do not have a lathe. My woodshop is only big enough for a few tools, and I'm almost at capacity now. I watch shows about turning every chance I get, and I'm really looking forward to being able to try it some time.

When I need to scratch that creative itch, I use the scroll saw. I haven't done anything too intricate yet, but I love being able to have that much fine control over the wood.

Arbiestsheft04 02-06-2004 06:47 AM

If you get a chance to turn take it. The fine control over the oreintation of grain and figure make it worthwhile alone, but the ability to create the subtle curve is what keeps me at the lathe. Look into local woodturning clubs, they have become more prevalant(sp?) in the last few years. Often they have demonstrations and some even have a loaner lathe for new members. Give turning a try, I bet you would like it.

Hahaha....I just coughed up a swallow of coffee on that one! Gotta love dogs. Snarly teeth, fast runners...big wimps!

Fun table. Cute doggie! I think its great that you take time to make your pet's life easier. Good for you! And, just because I'm curious, what kind of dog?

macmanmike6100 02-07-2004 07:44 PM

oh that's very cool, whether or not people call it art

Force 10 02-07-2004 09:35 PM

Damn right it's art! I only wish I was as gifted!

Jizzosh 02-16-2004 02:13 PM

I think thats awesome. well done.

WarWagon 02-16-2004 09:35 PM

Very well done, nice job on the finish. You mentioned exotic woods and that you liked natural finishes. In that case, just let me say that if you ever have the chance to make something out of Bubinga wood, take it! It looks absolutely INCREDIBLE when finished properly.

ireallydontknow 02-25-2004 11:54 PM

terrific table, terrific dog.. nice work!

txlovely 02-26-2004 03:58 PM

That is a most excellent bowl set-up. Your doggy should be proud. :)

rothman 02-26-2004 04:05 PM

haha, nice one man, i have the same water thing for my dog too, except its blue... but yeah, very impressive!

cinnles 02-27-2004 06:33 AM

Anything that contains any sort of expression from it's creator is art.

Therefore, if you care about the work you do when creating something, it's art. :)

I like the table. :)
