Here's a table I made for my dog's food/water bowls...



I recessed the footprint of each bowl about 1/8" so that the bowl sits snugly in the top. The bone shaped legs were just a fun touch... whaddya think?

my dog has the exact same water feeder thing. cept he's a wuss and won't drink from it because it makes gurgling sounds.

I put a couple of coats of indoor/outdoor urethane on it to seal it. He's a bit blind and has a tendency to nudge the bowl when he finds it, so I wanted to make it resistant to spills. I tend to steer away from coloring the wood...I like the natural finishes. The urethane I picked left a bit of an amber tint though, and I'm not sure that I like it...

The top is made of 1/2 inch plywood and 1/4 inch luan... the sides are made of yellow pine. (cheap and plentiful) I just recently started using more exotic woods...mahogany and walnut. Perhaps I'll post a couple of pics of those projects.

Man!!! That must be one lucky dog. A manmade table all to him/her? self. Very nice and the leg bones give it character.

The dog is very pampered, I agree. I bought the water and food dishes at PetSmart awhile ago. My mom wanted a table for her dogs too, so I ended up making her one for xmas.

Love the idea of routing out the outline of each bowl. May create one simliar to yours, if you do not mind. How did you connect the bone legs to the table?

I tried using a router the first time, but found it difficult. For this one I took a piece of 1/4" luan and used a scroll saw to cut the footprint of the bowls into it. Then I attached the legs to a piece of 1/2" plywood using screws, and glued the luan to the top of that (hiding the screws). I finished the edges with some scrap pine that I had.

Feel free to use the design. Lemme know if you need any further clarifications...

fhqwhgads , have you done any lathe work? I'm an avid turner and find that the lathe grants more artistic liberty than flat work. I primarily turn bowls and hollow vessels, though spindle work is satisfying. I would post a couple pics but my digi cam is less than cooperative with my new computer.

I would love to turn, but I do not have a lathe. My woodshop is only big enough for a few tools, and I'm almost at capacity now. I watch shows about turning every chance I get, and I'm really looking forward to being able to try it some time.

When I need to scratch that creative itch, I use the scroll saw. I haven't done anything too intricate yet, but I love being able to have that much fine control over the wood.

If you get a chance to turn take it. The fine control over the oreintation of grain and figure make it worthwhile alone, but the ability to create the subtle curve is what keeps me at the lathe. Look into local woodturning clubs, they have become more prevalant(sp?) in the last few years. Often they have demonstrations and some even have a loaner lathe for new members. Give turning a try, I bet you would like it.

Very well done, nice job on the finish. You mentioned exotic woods and that you liked natural finishes. In that case, just let me say that if you ever have the chance to make something out of Bubinga wood, take it! It looks absolutely INCREDIBLE when finished properly.
