5th Anniversary

So we've been together 5 years now. I made this drawing for my Lady based on her favourite Distillations Tree Dancer.

Thanks noodle. We planned on my doing a drawing for her, so we went out and found a pre-built frame made from barn board. Looks nice with the graphite and illustration board. The next step is to get a custom matte to pull the frame and drawing together.

Thanks SirLance

In the spirit of what the heck I'm posting 2 Tree Dancers I just finished that I want to put into the Bayview Art Tour coming up the end of October.

They each are 13" x 19" pencil, and if you can look closely enough they each have something they are sharing their space with.

Another 13" x 19" Tree Dancer. Posted here to keep from creating new threads with little or no original substance

btw - the original Anniversary Tree Dancer is now framed and under Museum glass, and hanging in my Lady's office as of tonight. Looks good if I may say so myself

Thanks ZS I think I'm getting closer to some of the places I ought to be going with my art with these particular pieces. Let's hope the iterations I plan to do with colour work as well

I'm chuffed, and thought I'd mention it here After all, this thread is where I posted the large scale drawings.

The 4 Tree Dancers I've posted in this thread sized 13 x 19 were sized that way to fit into frames that are under a certain size. This allowed the work to be submitted in the Don Valley Art Club's annual Fall Large & Small sale. If you submit 2 smaller pieces you can also submit 2 backup smaller pieces to act as replacements if either of your original works sell. Well, at the end of the first weekend I got a call that I'd sold one of my 2 original pieces and could bring in my backups. At the start of this weekend I was on duty as a club member, and a lovely younger couple came in, talked to me about Tree Dancer 03, and bought it. That means I was able to get both back-up pieces on the walls because both my original submissions sold.

Well, I'm puttering around the Manor this afternoon, waiting for 3 pm and the time for me to toddle down to the gallery to fetch home my last 2 Tree Dancers. I get a phone call telling me I no longer have to pick them up because they've been purchased. Rock on All 4 Tree Dancers in the set are now sold

Now I have to get making new ones because I'm in an invitational show next spring based on the theme of artistic imagination, and I think my Dancers represent that element in my work quite nicely

Using pencil creates a delicacy to the already intimate feeling of the images. Adding color could be tricky since there is some resemblance to blood vessels and all the complexity we have under our skin. I believe there are a few outsider artists who do that type of work and it looks fascinating but a bit unnerving. It might be fun to add multiple figures.

Hi barkeyes. Thanks ever so much for taking the time to look at the dancers and think about them. I was interested in using bone, tendon and muscle connections to bring the dancers closer to the female image while maintaining the sense of "tree". But you're very right. I don't want these to give off a creepy vibe. Quite the opposite, actually.

I've considered colour, mainly autumnal hues but certainly I've done the green look doing some of my earlier dancers while using pencil crayons. I think I'll definitely go back there again, maybe investigate washes, ink, stuff like that. And multiple images have always been on the radar. I just want to get the hang of these particular figures first because I think they are starting to work the way I want them to.

Hey fly - glad to have you drop into the thread and take a look around again. You've always been a real booster

I finally finished a new drawing and thought I'll just drop it into this thread with the others. Keep them company, so to speak. Maybe eventually I'll start to see the forest

Is it hard to see the forest when your lady is the model for all? Kind of in the way that uniqueness of every tree in the forest is sometimes hard to see when you're making smaller tweaks of each one.

I wonder sometimes about the tree dancers with the leaves in motion but separated from the body, but still in the same space. I think it's because fall is my favorite season, and I love nothing more to watch leaves twirl down from the trees. It is its own kind of dance.

Tree Dancer in Flight

Thanks for the comments amonkie I have wondered if I can somehow make the dance of the leaves be part of the dance of the tree I try to capture. Challenges challenges.

Thanks Cynthetique and jewels

Howdy Taylored Thanks for the looksee and the comments. I have no problem with anyone getting ideas from other people. It's all part of the social community we share. I just hope you post some of your work here, I always love to see new work.

I have just finished Tree Dancer In Flight - 12" x 18" pencil on illustration board. I was thinking after the fact that maybe I should have made the sparrow a bit smaller, but I wanted to show it leading the Dancer towards the viewer . . . Does anyone get that impression at all?

A gallery here in Toronto puts on an annual show called Square Foot - all submissions have to be exactly 12" square by no more than 5 inches deep. You can submit up to 3 pieces. I'm going to buy some 12" frames and put Dancers in them. Here is my first of 3 pieces.

(I need to figure out how to adjust the white balance on my camera - the image is coming in much greyer than it ought to be and photoshop isn't helping much)

Lotus Dancer 11" square approx.
