I consider an artform anything one person can do with their hands that another can't and have it be aesthetically cool and I can't do that and it is cool!!!
Did that make sense?

Not only is that art, it's ridiculous - as in ridiculously cool.

I'd be interested to see how you planned and made that. Very impressive.

This cake is getting more views than some naked people around here.

What the hell is up with that?

It is a nice cake, though. I'd be afraid to eat it.

that's great.
it reminds me of a stack of decorated tablas. which is also excellent.

as for whether it's art: i dont see why there's even a question.
in general, art is whatever you say it is.
so even if this wasnt a spectacularly lovely object, it'd still be art.
but it is a spectacularly lovely object and so requires no particular effort to be seen that way.

this is art.
it is made of cake.

or:

it is sculpture and the medium is pastry.

seriously, its all a matter of claims about what you do and where you choose to show it. doing a gallery show would be interesting, especially if you have a closing that featured all those in attendance getting to eat the show.

One of the best descriptions of art that I've heard is that it is a philosophy of ideas. In this case, we see a cake. When we normally think of cake, we think of food, but we soon think of celebrations or special occasions. In the case of this cake, we have taken it even further. Many viewers will be enraptured by the cake, looking at its colour, form, texture, and they will think several things about those aspects. Shortly after, they might think, Oh, right, this is food. Later still, they might think, But I wouldn't want to eat it. They think this maybe because of the way it looks, rather than what it truly is.

Cakes are primarily (or essentially) for eating. What makes this art is the very idea that it calls the idea of cake into question. It leads us to a discussion of not just this cake but our very concept of what a cake should or should not be, or what a cake should or should not do.

[Edit: I think the cake is incredible, but I would eat it.]

I've always hated this type of cake personally. they look like something gone bad wrong that someone was smart enough to make look like it was supposed to be that way.

but hey - everyone has to have an opinion, right? doesn't mean that the work shown above isn't spectaular to some people.

***NOTE*** this is NOT a slam on the cake shown above or the artist that crafted it. I'm certain she has other work that i would LOVE. I just dont go for this PARTICULAR style. thats just me - its not that she isnt a great "artist" in her medium.

That's interesting - that's the exact reason I DO like the cake.

Different strokes, right?

Also, whatever I think of your vision (I like it), your level of craftsmanship is very impressive.

I can barely make betty crocker cupcakes and get those frosted - that is very cool... and looks time consuming...

Are you the heir apparant to Ace of Cakes?

how long does one of those creations take to do? do you design on paper first or just go with the creative muse?

No I totally understand. I made this cake for a professional, and someone who wanted a cake like this. I've made all sorts of cakes, from a cake which had "ice" all over with tons of penguins, to a beautiful sleek cake with pretty simple calla lilies. It all depends on the client.
