I consider this art

Cake decorating, it's an art form, yeah?

This is one of my favorite's I've made.

Quite possibly! Although those cakes are fun. I want to make one sometime.

Shauk 09-21-2007 01:22 PM

still, all I can think of is "eat me, drink me"

noodle 09-21-2007 02:20 PM

Awesome.
Straight out of the Food Network's Cake Challenges.
Looks fantastic.

SecretMethod70 09-21-2007 02:32 PM

very interesting...it almost looks like cloth.

mixedmedia 09-21-2007 02:37 PM

Very nice cake, jenna!

...but I don't think I've ever seen a cock cake look more revolting.

SecretMethod70 09-21-2007 02:39 PM

If I get married anytime in the near future, maybe you'll give a discount?

MexicanOnABike 09-21-2007 03:22 PM

That's what I was thinking. If that's edible how in the world would you cut it? I have a hard enough time trying to divide a circle in equally sized pieces.... and by the way awesome looking cake.

Sun Tzu 09-21-2007 06:12 PM

sheer talent, if it wasnt an art before you certainly bring into the spotlight of being one.

ngdawg 09-21-2007 07:08 PM

I consider an artform anything one person can do with their hands that another can't and have it be aesthetically cool and I can't do that and it is cool!!!
Did that make sense?

newtx 09-22-2007 03:33 AM

That sure is art. I like the velvet and lace effect. Great cake!

Fly 09-22-2007 06:02 AM

what a cool cake.............nicely done.

paddyjoe 09-22-2007 07:07 AM

sweet deal here!

i've shot lots and lots o' weddings, and really don't recall seeing one this fine.

now, does it taste as fine as it looks?

ubertuber 09-22-2007 07:18 AM

Not only is that art, it's ridiculous - as in ridiculously cool.

I'd be interested to see how you planned and made that. Very impressive.

JumpinJesus 09-22-2007 10:14 AM

This cake is getting more views than some naked people around here.

What the hell is up with that?

It is a nice cake, though. I'd be afraid to eat it.

Willravel 09-22-2007 10:50 AM

Noir, art deco cake. Cool. Looks like something Roger Rabbit might eat or something from a Tim Burton movie.

roachboy 09-22-2007 11:29 AM

that's great.
it reminds me of a stack of decorated tablas. which is also excellent.

as for whether it's art: i dont see why there's even a question.
in general, art is whatever you say it is.
so even if this wasnt a spectacularly lovely object, it'd still be art.
but it is a spectacularly lovely object and so requires no particular effort to be seen that way.

this is art.
it is made of cake.

or:

it is sculpture and the medium is pastry.

seriously, its all a matter of claims about what you do and where you choose to show it. doing a gallery show would be interesting, especially if you have a closing that featured all those in attendance getting to eat the show.

One of the best descriptions of art that I've heard is that it is a philosophy of ideas. In this case, we see a cake. When we normally think of cake, we think of food, but we soon think of celebrations or special occasions. In the case of this cake, we have taken it even further. Many viewers will be enraptured by the cake, looking at its colour, form, texture, and they will think several things about those aspects. Shortly after, they might think, Oh, right, this is food. Later still, they might think, But I wouldn't want to eat it. They think this maybe because of the way it looks, rather than what it truly is.

Cakes are primarily (or essentially) for eating. What makes this art is the very idea that it calls the idea of cake into question. It leads us to a discussion of not just this cake but our very concept of what a cake should or should not be, or what a cake should or should not do.

[Edit: I think the cake is incredible, but I would eat it.]

Jenna 09-22-2007 01:22 PM

Eh, you can't eat this cake. It's styrafoam underneath!

It was just for show.

Baraka_Guru 09-22-2007 01:42 PM

I was speaking theoretically; if it were a cake.

Halx 09-23-2007 06:43 AM

I was gonna say.. marzipan overload.

Plan9 09-23-2007 08:01 AM

I want to crash my face into it.

I want to wear that cake like a hat.

Titan_Uranus 09-27-2007 01:01 AM

Cool cake, Jenna,I used to help an aunt of mine ,who made cake's wedding ,birthday etc.,to decorate them but nothing like this.

Midnight 09-27-2007 09:44 AM

I've always hated this type of cake personally. they look like something gone bad wrong that someone was smart enough to make look like it was supposed to be that way.

but hey - everyone has to have an opinion, right? doesn't mean that the work shown above isn't spectaular to some people.

***NOTE*** this is NOT a slam on the cake shown above or the artist that crafted it. I'm certain she has other work that i would LOVE. I just dont go for this PARTICULAR style. thats just me - its not that she isnt a great "artist" in her medium.

That's interesting - that's the exact reason I DO like the cake.

Different strokes, right?

Also, whatever I think of your vision (I like it), your level of craftsmanship is very impressive.

maleficent 09-27-2007 10:53 AM

I can barely make betty crocker cupcakes and get those frosted - that is very cool... and looks time consuming...

Are you the heir apparant to Ace of Cakes? :D

how long does one of those creations take to do? do you design on paper first or just go with the creative muse?

Bill O'Rights 09-27-2007 12:02 PM

Well...I, for one, think that Theodor Geisel would be proud as can be.

Too bad that it's made of styrofoam, though. It looked yummy. On the other hand...I've had cake that tasted like it was made of styrofoam before.

DEI37 09-27-2007 12:35 PM

That is SWEET! You do nice work.

No I totally understand. I made this cake for a professional, and someone who wanted a cake like this. I've made all sorts of cakes, from a cake which had "ice" all over with tons of penguins, to a beautiful sleek cake with pretty simple calla lilies. It all depends on the client.

Midnight 09-27-2007 01:40 PM

*hugs jennaboo4u tight*

God its WONDERFUL to be understood!
THANK YOU.

yeah its just the tilted thing - and I would L O V E to see your other creations!

GoldenOuroboros 09-27-2007 04:22 PM

Not only is it art, but it's edible too!
=]

kramus 09-27-2007 08:48 PM

That is a mighty fine looking professional piece of artwork there. It would be cool to see your portfolio (nudge-nudge).

troit 10-07-2007 06:32 PM

Reminds me of Cat in the Hat but fancier...

You certainly have a talent - hopefully you are making money for yourself because I know people in NYC that would pay $$$ for cakes that look like that! ;)

splat 10-08-2007 06:33 AM

That's a cool looking cake! I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

blueroses 10-19-2007 01:22 PM

love the cake, Jenna!

I tried decorating my first cake today..not as easy as it looks. haha. I'm sure it gets easier with practice though, I'd love to be able to do what you do!

Lame! I'd be much more impressed if it were real pastry.

If you can do the fondant pieces--that's the hardest part. Getting the round cake pieces to fit your design is the easy piece. You should post pictures of cakes made with actual cake that you've done. I'd like to see.

I'm jealous of the fondant. I need to learn to make cakes with fondant.

LadySin 10-30-2007 06:36 AM

Awesome cake Jenna! (Yeah I know I am late in this thread, but Im new, sue me lol) Do you have any other pictures of cakes you have done? I would really like to see some more.
