A couple items from a sculpture class
Perhaps some will enjoy these. A couple of pieces that I did this semester. Sadly, no photo documentation of other projects from this course. A project without a photo is far too fleeting.
I attached a poll. Here's why: My studies in the plant sciences are overwhelming. The coursework is demanding, time is short, expectations are high. I would like to focus entirely on my science coursework. My greatest concern is that if I put my art to the side for the next year, I will lose the skills that I have worked to develop. I also may lose my mind without completing a work from time to time.

I'm not so keen on the wire sculpture, but the wooden one I like.
You do realise that it's the wrong way up though, right?

heh. I never thought of it that way. Great to see what others bring to the work as they view it.

oh wow. i didn't even know it was a wire sculpture. i thought it was just a random scribble on a page. intense! I'd say keep going more toward the wodden style. it's cool. but ya, if it's supposed to be a dragonfly, then why not position it on the side like daniel_ did?

don't ever stop, not so long as it brings you happiness- that being said, I like the wooden sculpture, but i'd need a bit more to go on with the wire one... take that as you will, however, because I don't always "see" certain types of art, and therefore i don't think I appreciate them as much. it definitely looks like there's a good amount of work in it, though, and it's not bad looking... there are just certain types of art that I don't have an eye for at all.

I "see things" in the art you've produced. It's certainly multi-dimensional in its' meaning. Whether or not you meant for many meanings doesn't matter. It's alright (even encouraged) if these things happen by accident, but I suspect a thinking person behind these pieces. Photographs, especially, aren't doing these works justice - so keep that in mind, people!
There's all different types of artists out there and I believe there are just as many that don't make a full-time career out of it. Your plant science studies will enrich what you do. This is not to say that a career as an artist is beyond you. Just that we all need to be artists to some extent, and you clearly are one. Keep it up, girly.

if i have to choose between the two, i choose the wooden one.
but both have their merits, the largest of which is keeping your creative juices flowing. mmmm... juice. don't worry about losing your artistic skills. if they are in you, they can remain dormant for a while while you hone your other (perhaps more lucrative) skills. now if you're worried about losing your mind, i can offer little advice. other than you're probably right. you'd don't want to focus too much on any one thing. diversity of thought is healthy. i'm happy that you've chosen to share this side of your brain with us.

A couple of you have refered to my wooden sculpture as a dragon fly. I like the analogy. It wasn't what I had in mind, but I like it.
The wooden one is NOT meant to be a dragon fly. I saw the "Wings" are the skeleton of leaves. The "thorax" a stem. the "head" is a sheathed fruit. I was going to explain each piece initially, but decided against it. I'd rather have folks interpret them as they will. Knowing what I bring to a piece prevents others from bringing their own creativity into the experience. Thank you all for your encouraging words! I'm curious for the one person who recommended that I stop. They left no comment - is this a short term stop while I finish my degree or a long-term stop that they're requesting? Analog - Thanks for letting me know your honest opinion, along with your potential bias. I'll be sure to keep up with some sort of art this semester. Though, my transcripts might not reflect. Aberkok - yes, there are dimensions of meaning behind these. I've already divulged too much, though. Bring what you will and enjoy. Doodlebird - thank you for your encouragement. I hope that the creativity doesn't run away.

The shapes you made into a plant just said "Insect" to me. I don't disagree with you, I just see them differently.
I like the work though.

Exactly, Daniel! That's what you bring to this piece, and it's wonderful. I like the coorelation to a dragon fly. A lot. Maybe it works better that way. What the piece is to me will always be different than what it is to a viewer. This is why I don't wish to impose my interpretation.
