Architectural Project: A house for an artist..

Recent project where we had to design a house for an artist. The house is separated so the artist can take refuge in the isolated side when needed, with a private courtyard in the middle connected to a swimming pool. What do you think? Starting my second year in school...

I like the project as a whole. Its quite impressive and creative. The only thing that makes me wonder is the tight spaces. With all that room, why does the bedroom look to be the size of a closet? Does claustrophobia incite artistic inspiration?

Pretty nice, albeit a tad fortress-like. Could the top of the 'tower' be functional? Perhaps solar glass around the top? A couple of more windows for natural light could be added as well and to get better views of the courtyard.
Would you believe that when I was in high school, I wanted to try architecture but girls were discouraged from taking drafting classes?

I guess I should have gone into detail about the materials and room placements...
The two bedrooms at the right in the top pic are for trashed guests, the main bedroom is accross the bridge, with the whole wall open to the terrace.
There's a lot of transparent concrete in the buiding. I was also planning on using fiber-optic skylights to give the illusion that sunlight is coming UP through the floors...

By the way that's a goddamn shame people were so closed minded at your school. The best artist in my class is a girl!

Looks like fun.

as an artist, my ideal house would be "loft-like", ie just one enormous room with ceiling to floor windows, high ceilings, etc.

Of course. Your pretty little hands were made to hold cooking utensils, not pens.

I too wonder about the tower. What is the artist's medium? If he (or she) is a sculptor, there would need to be a lot of space and light, and maybe a drain hole in the floor??? If the artist is going to paint or work digitally, one would need the ability to cut out a lot of light.

BTW, the whole thing looks really cool. I wish I had a studio for all my toys.

Very nice work. I like how you have the main bedroom opening to the terrace. I have to echo Halx's comment on the tight spaces though. Being an artist myself, as Derwood mentioned as well, a loft-like place is ideal,... wide open spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows. Since you have a pretty courtyard in between the two units, and the guests bedrooms are so tight, windows opening to the courtyard might be nice. I think I see a window on one of them.. maybe. I would love to have a huge, across-the-wall window behind the bed in the main room opening up to the swimming pool. That will be groovy, baby.

Absolutely love your sketches:love:

Great stuff. Unless the artist in question is claustrophobic. But if not, way cool design - I'd like to see this house if it ever gets built.
