I think if you are able to match it that nicely with the colors and shapes, you should try one without an underlay - just open a blank backdrop and try to do it free-hand. For instance, I drew this picture a while back in Photoshop with a regular ball mouse, while looking at a printed-out picture of this character from one of my favorite animes. I think you should give it a shot!
