A mother's love

I just finished this portrait of my cousin Randi holding her son, Lucas:

http://www.nancybenfeldt.dk/Kunst/lucas.jpg

She's getting married this saturday (Lucas will be baptized the same day) and this drawing will be my wedding gift for her and her husband.

The size is 12,5 cm x 16,8 cm and the paper is actually newsprint - hence the little, black dots here and there.

It took me about 2 - 2½ hours to make it. My back's pretty sore right now but their reaction to this drawing will be worth it!

Oh wow, I'm sure she'll treasure this for many years to come!

What made you decide to use newsprint?

cj2112 08-03-2006 10:42 AM

Nancy, that is absolutely beautiful.

JustJess 08-03-2006 11:20 AM

wow. wow wow wow.
That is truly beautiful. They are going to cry when they see this. Nice work. :*

Nancy you know you can't post photographs of children...oh wait :)

Charming picture Nancy, nice work.

A gift of love...it's beautiful, Nancy.

Nancy 08-03-2006 10:11 PM

Zhank you all! :D

Sultana: I'm working for a newspaper so there's plenty of newsprint lying around. I thought it would be nice to try something different, as I usually draw on plain, white paper. Plus, it'll be a funny fact for my cousin to add when she'll be showing the drawing to people for years to come.

The lines also appear darker on newsprint which I really like!

great drawing Nancy...........she should love it.

Shpoop 08-12-2006 07:21 PM

Any news on how she liked it?

Nancy 08-14-2006 07:19 AM

^^ She loved it - as did her husband :D

Funny thing is.. she told me that she had been thinking about having Lucas' portrait done not so long ago and then I give her one. What a coincidence!
I wasn't aware of her intentions so I'm really thrilled that I managed to make her one before she got to order one from a local artist - it's much nicer to have a portrait of a family member done by another family member, wouldn't you say?

that's pretty sweet nancy.
sweet in an "awww... so cute" way.
not so much in a "dude... sweet" way.

Very, very cool Nancy. Your eye always impresses me.

Thanks a bunch cyrnel!

I could use more practice though - I really suck at drawing hair :o

genuinegirly 08-24-2006 08:11 PM

Actually, the hair was what first struck me as intricate and beautiful about this sketch. Newsprint is my favorite, just be warned, though, that it yellows over time much more than usual sketch paper.

Beautiful work! Spontaneous images of family by family are much better than comissioned work.

Yeah I know - I had it laminated the very next day :)

genuinegirly 08-27-2006 12:40 PM

Ooo lamination. I should try that on a few of my favorites.

I highly recommend it as it prolongs the life of your drawings. Make sure that you get it done at a professional, though - cheap equipment may crash during the lamination and destroy your drawings! :|

Brewmaniac 08-28-2006 06:37 AM

Nancy, you definitely captured a mother's love. What a beautiful gift from the heart!

You are extremely talented!

Nancy 08-28-2006 07:33 AM

Thank you so much, Mr. Maniac :o
