Back in fhqwhgads' workshop...

Here's my latest project. It's a trash can cabinet based on a version that my mother bought at an Amish market when I was a kid. This is actually the fourth that I have built, and with each one it gets a little bit better.

This one is made of solid 8.5" pine boards edge-glued to give me the dimensions that I needed. I would have loved to use a harder wood like oak or cherry, but that was cost prohibitive. I usually don't stain my projects, but I wanted this to be a bit darker so it would match my best-friend's kitchen a bit better. I topped it off with five coats of a semi-gloss polyurethane so that it could be cleaned without too much trouble.

It's clean, it's simple, and I like it very much. I, too, think that a wood like cherry or oak would beautiful, though this is indeed quite nice.

I hope you'll excuse my probably idotic question, but what is the small compartment at the bottom used for? I see what looks to be a towel in there, but I'm unsure of its actual use.

Very good project but the 5 coats sounds like alot. I could never be that much of a perfectionist but it definitly shows how glossy it is in your picture.

Ng nailed it... that's a storage compartment I added to hold the extra trashbags.

I used a semi-gloss poly, but I guess with five coats, it did get a bit glossy. This thing is going to get daily use... not only the edge of the lid being grabbed but mine gets dirty on the inside all the time. I'm hoping that by over-doing the poly, it would make it much easier to clean.

that's very pretty.. My personal taste would like a darker wood or a darker stain, but that's pretty... very clean looking...

you do good work, son... :)

Very well done - your attention to little details such as the shelf and the mulit coats for a long life are giving you many extra stars in my book :)

May your workshop weather continue!

Very stylish. Well made and the trash bag storage is a fine touch.

Great work. I am slowly but surely re-learning my woodworking skills. Looks like you are way ahead.

I've still got a lot to learn. I have come a long way since I started though...

First off, the artwork looks nice. I wish I had the time and energy to do stuff like that. Secondly, did you happen to get your screen name "fhqwhgads" from the Home Star Runner website?

I love it. This is a great way to beautify something otherwise unsightly and utilitarian. Nice work.
