makeup

how many of you wear it religiously? :suave:
and how much of it? :hmm:

how many don;t wear any at all?

how dependent are we on makeup?
:|

SiN 12-01-2005 12:55 PM

hm, I like makeup.
wearing it, and shopping for it.

I don't wear it all the time ... on workdays i just throw on some foundation and mascara, maybe a mono eyeshadow, and some tinted lip balm.

going out with my bf, if I'm not feeling lazy I'll go a bit more elaborate with the eyes.

and when i really wanna sex it up, i'll put on some red lipstick.
I treated myself to a tube of Chanel's Vamp a couple weeks ago, and I must say, that shit is amazing, for women who can pull off blood-red lips.

'dependent' on it ... who the fuck cares? I sure don't. :D

Meditrina 12-01-2005 01:00 PM

On the days that I go to work, I wear just the basics. Eyeliner, foundation and blush. Oh, and lipstick, when I remember.

Days home, none if I am not going anywhere. If I go shopping, just eyeliner.

I am not dependent on it, I don't go crazy shopping for it, and I like to keep it simple.

Grasshopper Green 12-01-2005 01:21 PM

I used to do the whole makeup thing....foundation, powder, eyeliner/shadow, mascara, lipliner, and lipstick....it took too long and frankly, I looked better without all of it. I usually just wear blush, mascara, and tinted lip gloss now, unless I'm going out with friends or family. I often go to work without makeup, although I do try to wear blush at least, just because I look kind of pale and washed out without it.

ColonelSpecial 12-01-2005 01:30 PM

When I was to feel all glam I put on shimmery eyeshadow and lipgloss. Usually I think putting on makeup just takes too much time. I have never been able to put on eyeliner so I say screw it. Day to day, I don't wear anything at all.

Sage 12-01-2005 01:41 PM

Mascara is a definite "do" for me to step out the door and feel, at the very least, "proper." I feel like I look better with mascara on, and (call me old fashioned) I adhere to the adage my mother passed on to me about looking your best for your husband no matter if you're cleaning house or going to the Academey Awards.

I put on eyeliner and shadow to play things up a bit, but usually if I go that far I add in the foundation, powder, and blush. Sometimes I totally sex it up for Martel's sake, when we go out, just to have a little bit of fun :)

taboo 12-01-2005 03:03 PM

Sage, I agree with the looking your best whether you're cleaning or out ect..
obviously not to its extreme, but even if I have to go out and do some groceries, i'll still wear some blush and some eyeliner..

Otherwise, I'll always wear a bit of foundation, blush, eyeliner and mascara

genuinegirly 12-01-2005 03:09 PM

I can't say that I don't wear it at all, but it's pretty close.

Don't particularly like makeup. Only get in the mood to wear it every now and again. I have shown up at semi-formal events without makeup. Guess what: no one notices or cares. When I do wear makeup - almost no one notices or cares. So it's all for me. I have relatively clear skin, long eyelashes, and features (eyebrows, lips) that stand out just right without adding the annoyance of makeup.

Sultana 12-01-2005 04:31 PM

I enjoy playing with makeup in that I think it's really interesting how one can change one's appearance with the effects of shadows, light, and colors. I tend to do a lot of stage-type makeup, as I am a performer, part-time. Since it's a big part of my hobby, I've learned *a lot* about it, and have fun with it while trying to not spend too much time and money(!) on it. I already have more than I'll ever use up.

On a regular daily (work day) basis, I wear it all, but lightly and w/ very fast application time.

If anyone has makeup questions, feel free to ask me. :)

Oh, and I recommend MAC across the board, for everything.

serlindsipity 12-01-2005 04:47 PM

on a daily basis, i wear none. I am however required to wear it for work (it was in my contract...) and now that i tend to do it at work, i enjoy it once in awhile. however, i own none of my own (save lipgloss and mascara) and i really wish i did now for night i go out and what not.

ngdawg 12-01-2005 05:29 PM

Liquid foundation to tone out my pink skin, some eyeliner and sometimes, eyebrow powder. I HATE lipstick-never wear it, but I do have flavored, vitamin enhanced gloss, but even that lasts forever as I don't use it much.
Eyes are the one thing I won't even go to the grocery without doing-my glasses make them look half their natural size.
Spouse used to work for Revlon and would bring home all kinds of things and I'd end up throwing most of it out or trying to give it away.

Impetuous1 12-01-2005 05:48 PM

I don't usually wear makeup since I have really clear skin and for some weird reason my eyelids are a different shade than the rest of my skin so it usually looks like I have eyeshadow on. Sometimes I'll add some powder to take off the shine, some eyeliner and some tinted lipgloss. Usually though, I find it's a tremendous pain in the ass because not only do you have to put it on, you also have to do upkeep. What a headache! But I must admit that when I do wear makeup I usually get more complements than without.

Eowyn_Vala 12-01-2005 07:14 PM

I look so much better with makeup than without. I should wear it everyday to even out my skin tone and just look better since I do work in an office.

But I don't. I'm not much for the makeup. Occasionally I'll wear it if I have time and feel like it (read almost never). I will for special occasions. I like how it looks but I don't know how to apply some of it like eyeliner so I don't try too often. When I do it looks terrible.

If I knew how to apply makeup in a fast effective way, I would do it everyday. Anyone wanna teach me?

noodle 12-01-2005 07:22 PM

I am allergic to every single makeup item I've tried except four. Almay mascara and The Body Shop pencil eyeliner (still makes the eyes bloodshot after about 6 hours). Rimmel lip gloss. Hemp lip repair from The Body Shop. Everything else creates a Halloween effect. Complete with puffy eyelids, swollen and cracked lips, blotchy skin and even hives at times. It's a nice excuse to keep my morning routine to a minimum, so I don't mind all that much.

rlynnm 12-01-2005 07:25 PM

Have you ever seen people at the make up counters that just go Oooh that's pretty and smear it on the base of your thumb just to see what it would look like against skin..yeah I'm one of those..I love shopping for the stuff, but I don't really use much of it. I enjoy the creative aspect of it.

I dont really wear any to school or if I go to the market, but I do wear a little bit to work. It's nothing dramatic, just something that makes me look a little older hahaha. I step it up a notch if I go out at night just cause I like how make up looks in the evening..and how it just illuminates/accentuates the face....

abaya 12-01-2005 07:39 PM

Often I don't have time to put on make-up, but when I do it on a daily basis, it's at least 2 of the following:

* blush (a little)
* eyeliner (in the last two years, have really gotten into doing this daily; helps me look older and feel more sexy)
* lip-stuff (usually chapstick, but occasionally lipstick because I feel my lips are so bland and colorless without anything on them)

and when I go out, then I really put on the lipstick and throw in some mascara, too.

I have sort of given up on powder... and I never got into foundation. I like my skin the way it is, actually.

uptown 12-01-2005 07:55 PM

I drink a lot of water, I cleanse and moisturize like it was a religion. I generally go with just concealer and tinted mositurizer, I'll add eyeliner and a natural toned lip gloss for work. Less is more and glowing healthy skin looks better imho than plastering on a lot of makeup trying to disguise an aging face .

onodrim 12-01-2005 08:32 PM

On a normal average day if I'm jsut going to class then it's usually nothing, or jsut some mascara and lip gloss only. When I have to be dressed up for a performance or going out I just add some blush, eyeliner, and shadow. When I feel like looking extra hot for any reason then I mostly play up the eyes with really dark liner and like two shades of shadow or just pure black. I almost never wear lipstick, I can't stand the stuff and I don't think it works on me anyway. Gloss is always more than enough. But generally speaking I don't wear much makeup at all unless I have a special occasion or feel like looking a little more spicy than usual. :p

cellophanedeity 12-01-2005 09:22 PM

If it's summer and I intend on going outside, I wear some form of sunscreen. On a regular day, nothing except maybe a fruity lip balm if lips are chapping. On a day where I want/need to look fancier, then some mascara and a coloured gloss. On a day where I want to look a bit more aggressive, I wear black eyeliner on my bottom lid and mascara. I don't own blush or powder or foundation, and have only a couple of eyeshadows that are hand-me-downs from mum. I suck at putting on makeup, and it makes me itchy.

Anyway, I'm plenty pretty without it. ;)

That you are :).

On a daily basis, as part of getting up and around in the morning, whether I'm going out or staying in. In order:

concealer
liquid foundation
blush
setting powder
eyeliner
eye shadow (subtle earth tones)
mascara
eyebrow pencil
lipliner
long lasting lip color (daily wear)
lip gloss (dressy evenings)

I try to go for a subtle, understated look for everyday stuff, and really don't go overboard even when doing it up fancy, though I will switch to brighter color for my lips and eyes.

taboo 12-01-2005 09:47 PM

intereting responses :)

like someone said, I also enjoy the creative aspect of playing with colours and seeing the different effect sthey have on you. I put on makeup depending on my mood. If i'm in a more agressive mood, I'll wear lipstick. if not i'll stick with some softer shades of eyeshadow ect... it's fun :P

kylie 12-01-2005 09:54 PM

i used to never wear any but a year ago start wearing foundation , powder and blushes at work
and if i go out with baby for short period of time nothing usually dont wear any when day off so let my face have a rest. but i start getting dependent on it cos dark cicle really bother me and i look terrible without foundation or powder
i dont really put marscara cos my eye lashes too short :P

taboo 12-01-2005 10:11 PM

i have another question..

can you guys recommend a moisturizer for the face that is rich and creamy, and that won;t irritate? I don;t want to spend a lot...something reasonable..my skin is normal to dry, and i find it loses a lot of moisture in the winter now...any suggestions? :)

Lead543 12-01-2005 11:41 PM

Foundation-power-blush-eyeliner-eyeshadow-mascara.

Takes me 10 minutes, everyday.

For moisturizer I'd recommend anything you wear overnight. It's thick, creamy and when you wake up in the morning your face is freshly moisturized but not greasy. I usually use Olay.

5757 12-02-2005 12:09 AM

I love this thread!!! So I wear it everyday. Religiously! So lets see. . . I wear

-foundation - to even out skin tones!
-blush - bring out the cheek bones
-eyeliner - shape the eyes....enlarge size
-mascara - lifts the eyes
-scotts kisses - to make my lips shine
-oh and not to mention lip gloss ^^
-eye shadow

How much do we depend on makeup?? I think that is really different from person to person. I personally feel like it's fun to wear it. I watched a show once where women were so dependant on it, they refused to let anyone see them without it.....even their husbands. So, I guess some of us can feel our value goes down when the amount of makeup goes down. Its too bad for them.

shesus 12-02-2005 05:08 AM

Anyone who knows about my shopaholic tendencies, my addiction to shoes, and have seen my pictures, will not be surprised that I love make-up. I wear it everyday. I used to not weat much makeup when I was going throuhg my depression and had a low self-esteem, but in the past couple of years, I wear it everyday. I don't do foundation, that's too cakey. I can't wear the drug store makeup (except on the eyes) because of my tempermental skin, so all my actual face make-up is Estee Lauder.

In my make-up bag you would find:
Concealer
Powder
Blush
Eyeliner (black, brown, and green)
Eyeshadow (Various colors, but my favorite is brown and then I do a layering process with various colors blue) This makes my eyes very blue :)
Black mascara

I have various lipsticks, but I never wear that. I think that it's too messy.

It only takes me a couple minutes to do my make-up so it's not a hassle at all. I look ok without makeup, but I prefer to have some on just to give my face that extra something.

Shadefire 12-02-2005 05:39 AM

When I wear foundation, my upper lip sweats it all off, and when I wear lipstick it always gums up around the inside of my lips. It's such a bother that if I wear makeup at all, its usually just a little eyeliner.

I'm still looking for the 'best' moisturizer. Right now I'm using oil of olay. It is nice, but in cold weather, my skin still feels tight and itchy. I'm on the hunt for a good moisturizer too. I hate the runny ones because they make my skin too oily.

taboo 12-02-2005 07:08 AM

i heard that to prevent getting that line of "gummy lipstick" near the inside of your lips, it's good to exfoliate your lips ect... I find that still doesn;t work..and everytime I wear lipstick, I'm always cheking for that line to appear so that I can rub it off lol :|

Sage 12-02-2005 08:16 AM

I use Desert Essence - their moisturiser is quite nice and I've found it makes my skin look better- clears it up a bit. I used to use Aveda (the really expensive stuff) but I actually like DE better- and it's cheaper. I get it at my local natural grocery store- try Earth Fare, Greenlife, or Whole Foods (least on the East Coast).

A similar question- what's the best facewash to use? I use Aveda but it's $28 for a four-ounce bottle... if I could find something cheaper that works just as well (I have pretty normal skin- my nose is a bit oily and has clogged pores I'm always working on) it'd be great :D

My skin is similar to yours, except that I also tend to break out if I'm not *really* careful.
Moisturizers I use are Neutrogena untinted w/SPF15 or 30 (30, if I can find it - staying out of the sun and ALWAYS wearing sunblock is the BEST way to avoid wrinkles) or Estee Lauder's Daywear Creme for daytime. I swtich around to help avoid acne. Wierd, but I've found that switching moisturizers and foundations helps a lot.

For night I use Astara's Intense Moisture, or something close to that.
Astara's kinda pricey, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE the entire line.

Gentler is always better, and I recommend Cetaphil (reg, not for oily skin, regardless of your type) and Beauty Without Cruelty (another fantastic line).

For a cheap exfoliant I add baking soda to my cleanser every once in a while. You can also buy jojoba beads and do the same.

I do NOT use the ground up apricot seeds or whatever scrubs. the scrubby stuff in there is rough (actually has rough edges), and can tear up your skin, and actually make acne and other skin conditions much worse. Jojoba beads are shperical, no edges, and work great.

I am a HUGE skin care whore. And it shows. :)

amonkie 12-02-2005 09:45 AM

Sage - I'm definitely going to look into DE - I'm currently using Aveda also right now... and my wallet is not looking forward to refilling the trio of facewash items.

rlynnm 12-02-2005 10:16 AM

Ah and the question about how dependent we are on this. I think if some of us make it so much a part of our routine, the tendency to create an attachment is pretty high. I have an aunt who will takes 2 hours to get ready, just to go to church even. She relies so much on make up that she avoids answering the door if she doesn't have any. I'm not sure why either, she's 48 and she looks so great, many people mistake for her being in her late thirties....

When you get used to seeing yourself enhanced, and the attention you get from doing so is heightened, I believe, can, be an addiction...

So are any scrubs with aluminum oxide balls. I find that L'Oreal's dermabrasion scrub is actually gentler than those awful apricot scrubs. Personally, I use Clinique's basic Exfoliating Scrub. It's an exfoliant in a good cleansing base; in the winter it's gentle enough for me to use every day (adding more or less water to the scrub controls how exfoliating it is, and it does a brilliant job of sloughing off all the dead and dry skin on my face). For a moisturizer I use plain ol' Nivea Creme. Very old-fashioned, but very good on dry skin in the winter. I don't recommend it if you're acne prone, as it is a very oily lotion. For those of you looking for a great moisturizer, I really recommend Elizabeth Arden's Visible Difference. You can pick up 2 containers of it for $27.99 at Costco--usually. It's a very fluffy, light creme, non-greasy, but it feels like your face just drank a whole glass of water when you put it on.

Here is a link to the Costco site: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...opnav=&browse=

As for my own make-up habits...I love make-up. Love vamping it up. But I only get to do it when I go out on my own or with friends--the SO prefers me natural, which is good because I don't like to wear too much make-up on a daily basis. I can't wear it for work (it would just melt off). So when I do wear make-up, it's usually quite tame:

--Prestige black or brown eyeliner (Prestige is the best eyeliner I've found for the money)
--Lip gloss, usually Neutrogena
--Mac or Rimmel eyeshadow
--Lancome mascara

Generally, I like to use a light gold shadow from Mac on my lids, a nice neutral gloss on my lips, and about 10 coats of mascara (Lancome doesn't clump, no matter how much you put on, and I like more). For me, with very dark lashes and brows, it is a very natural look.

I should also note, that if one put together all the make-up I own or have purchased in the last three years, it would easily take up over two cardboard boxes. That's right--two.

maleficent 12-02-2005 11:27 AM

I'm a total non-make up person.. I like gloss or something on my lips, because otherwise they get dry - but regular makeup.. doesn't help me... back in high school and college and a few years after in summer theater, I used to do makeup for stage.. and can make anyone look great - except me :(

Moisturizer is essential... especially wiht SPF in it -- I won't leave the house without it - Oil of Olay was great when I was in my 20s... but my skin has gotten so much dryer now.. I really like Lancome's Absolue line.. it's pricey but it's got a creaminess without greasiness that really absorbs and doesn't clog pores. I also like Origins masks.. those are good for monthly deep cleanings.

Just thought I'd add another nod to Prestige, I love their eyeliners, best I've ever used, easy to apply, lasts all day, and very cheap, plus they have some really fun and unique colors. All their eye products are top notch really.

I have pretty sensitive skin, and I haven't found anything that has worked better than Oil of Olay moisturizer for sensitive skin. My face gets dry pretty easily if I don't use it every morning after I shower and wash my face.

As for makeup, I prefer that it not take more than 5 minutes to put on... heh. I use foundation, eyeshadow, and mascara and I'm applying chapstick or lip gloss way too many times a day. I like my lips to be soft and taste good I guess. :p I wear makeup almost every day... the days I don't are the ones when I'd rather sleep more than wake up and put makeup on.. or even take a shower... before classes. Usually on Sundays I don't either. It's not a planned thing, it's just that I'm usually at home doing homework most of the day. :)

rlynnm 12-03-2005 05:01 AM

Do you think there's a huge difference in the pigment of department store brand versus the brands they sell at your local shops? I always wondered what accounted for the huge difference in cost other than the brand name..

SiN 12-03-2005 09:52 AM

yes, generally higher-end brands are more pigmented, especially with eyecolours and lipsticks.

there are of course exceptions, which is why it's usually worthwhile to read reviews.

rlynnm 12-03-2005 11:15 AM

MAC, for instance--their eyeshadows are pure pigment. Because of that, I find that they last a lot longer than other shadows both in wear and usage. Thus I buy more and more MAC eyeshadows versus other kinds--besides, MAC has the coolest colors.

I second this. The Oil of Olay is the only consistent thing I put on my face daily. If I'm feeling like it, I'll wear some foundation, liquid (almay skin-stays-clear), but only on my nose and under my eyes and maybe on my chin. If I do the foundation under my eyes, I gotta wear blush because my skin is super pale.

On occasion on a weekday, I'll put some mascara on, or if I have time I'll do the eyeshadow/eyeliner thing. Lipstick I keep to a gloss or neutral color.

Sometimes, I just wanna play and I go full out, red lipstick and all. Usually don't leave the house with that on :) A couple weeks ago I went to a musical, and I wore more "night" makeup than I usually would. Unfortunately, my timing usually sucks. I wear more makeup when I feel prettier, which is usually when my skin is at its clearest. Then the makeup clogs pores and I break out, I'm smart. ;)

rhaevyn 12-03-2005 07:24 PM

I rarely wear makeup. Only when I feel like it, which isn't very often. And that's funny because I own a ton of it.

For a moisturizer, I always use Oil of Olay with sunscreen for combination skin every day. I've been using Oil of Olay since I was about 16 and am now 30. It's always just the right amount of moisture and it never makes me break out.

I agree with onesnow, MAC seems to last a lot longer, but then again, I dont get much of an opportunity to wear much make up. When I do wear their eyeshadows, they do last all day. I've been a fool for MAC for a loooong time....

Sweetpea 12-04-2005 02:38 PM

i only wear makeup a couple times a week... mostly on the weekends since i'm going out with my hubby and want to look cute for myself and for him :)

I love my skin, so i never wear foundation or blush of any kind , i have pale skin with nice pink cheeks at all times (Irish coloring) so i usually just focus on the eyes and lips:

eye shadow (always) ( in pinks or light greens)
mascara (always)
eyes liner (occasionally)
lip liner (sometimes)
Lipstick (always)

Sometimes during the week, i'll wear lipstick just to feel pretty... Overall though, i don't wear that much makeup... as Cello said, i feel pretty without it too :)

My hubby says he prefers me without because i look pretty naturally but that when i do wear it, it makes for a fun change and i look equally lovely .... (he's so pefect) :)

la petite moi 12-04-2005 04:36 PM

I refuse to wear makeup. I have worn it only ONCE to go out, and that was for junior year prom. Never, ever again. It makes you look fake and unnatural, despite most women's claim that there is "natural" makeup.

I think that makeup that makes someone look fake and unnatural has been done wrong. It's definitely an art- the subtlies of it look great when they're done right, but done wrong they throw everything off-kilter and make the whole picture just look bad.

It's like perfume, to me. Just the right amount is sexy, but anything more than that and you're gagging.

jouahman32 12-07-2005 12:49 PM

There are some women who would look really scary without makeup(aka some celebrities). I barely wear makeup, I never really have. The most I will wear on occasion is concealer, powder and lip gloss. I have always gotten compliments of my skin tone, and have decided to leave well enough alone.

taboo 12-07-2005 04:08 PM

that's good--it's important to give your skin a break if you wear it every day, or often..to breathe!

Naked Communist 12-10-2005 12:06 AM

The only time I wear makeup is when I go clubbing. I'll do the basics - blush, lipgloss, and spend time on my eyes (I think they're my best feature). I never wear foundation or powder. I'm lucky - got good skin.

I never wore makeup in highschool - mom didn't let me and then when I was old enough, I just didn't care - more of a jock than a girly-girl. I just got into the makeup thing 2 or 3 yrs ago. Still don't wear it much, tho.

taboo 12-10-2005 08:08 AM

i think the women that look "scary" without it (like celebrities) only seem scary just because we are so used to seeing them all made up everywhere and all the time.

Hmm on your recommendation I may buy some of that... :)

I don't wear makeup for work.
Well sometimes lip gloss.

If I'm goin shopping I'll wear subtle makeup.

But going out is heavy black eyeliner, glittery eyeshadow, very dark lips and blusher too. :)

I almost always use the Bare Minerals collection of makeup to even out my skin tone. I have "problem skin" its very sensative, prone to acne and rashes and these products actually help it, amazing! It's easy, very light and always very natural.

I use Paula's Choice products for cleansing and moisturizers and skin balancers. They are also very light and never, ever greasy.
Plus, I ALWAYS use some kind of sunscreen.

Hey, my twin! I've used Bare Escentuals foundation for a long time, it's one of the things that finally helped me get rid of my low-grade but constant acne. But I still do mix it up, try to not use only one thing all the time. But the BE is the closest thing I have to a holy grail, foundation-wise.

And PC is the best, and inexpensive too.

Apache 01-09-2006 06:17 PM

If I'm just running out to get groceries or out paying bills I don't wear anything. When I'm going out for any other reasons dinner, clubbing ect. I wear it.

Atropos4 01-09-2006 07:30 PM

I'm not big on makeup. I had a severe reaction to eyeliner a couple years ago where my eyelids burned crisp and my eyes swelled shut. So, I was scared to for a long time. Last year however I decided to risk it. I only occassionally wear makeup, and only on the weekends. I can't wear eyeliner and mascara to work because the dog and cat hair stick to my eyes. blech

When I do wear it I wear only eye liner, mascara and maybe some lip glosss....that's it
My skin is too sensitive to risk anything else and lip color never lasts on me so I don't bother

Too damn dependent if you ask me. I know a girl that, despite her very good looks, feels so insecure without make-up that she wears it during the night!

Personally I like make-up but only in small doses. I only use mascara except when I go to a party/wedding etc - then I throw in some lipstick and eyeliner too. Wearing more than that makes me feel to incredibly false.

Loverboy's not really into women wearing make-up and often tells me how good I look without it. He often encourages me to wear none at all. I can't tell you how much that boosts my self-esteem not to mention that it makes me feel incredibly relaxed around him.

Even so I say that it takes a women with a damn good self-esteem to walk around wearing none at all. I admire such women to death.

No matter how perfect it's been done it's still only a mask which makes some women feel fake and with good reason..

For me, that's one of the things I enjoy about make-up--the drama, the theatricality of it (recovering theatre nerd here). I like to do things like bold, smoky eyes--things that stick out and make me look obviously made-up. BUt that is only for very special occasions--big parties, dinners out, etc. Would you catch me wearing that every day? No. Every day is a little eyeliner, a little eyeshadow (usually light pink or yellow, brightens the eyes), and Chapstick...shoot, it's usually not even that much.

Oh, and a good recommendation for those of you looking for an alternative to base: Nivea makes a cream called Simply Glowing that has light-reflecting particles in it to make your skin appear brighter and smoother without actually covering up your skin. It's a lightweight moisturizer that I tend to use everyday (I trade off with a moisturzer by Neutrogena that has glycolic acid in it).

I hear ya! Make-up can be sooo much fun. It just seems like some girls become obessed with the perfect image that make-up can provide and ultimately they have trouble embracing their natural look. Pity I say.

Sage 01-20-2006 10:34 AM

I went looking around for a good book on makeup (and different makeup looks) and found a real gem in amongst all the others- Making Faces by Kevin Acouin. This guy has been doing makeup for runway shows and celebrety photo shoots and all sorts of stuff, and is AMAZING at applying makeup. He explains about all the different types of makeup, and goes on to say that for a large majority of women, they've gotten used to doing their makeup one way and often it's too over the top- they could just wear concealer and powder, instead of full foundation for example. He illustrates tons of everyday and superglamor looks in the book, makes them really easy to understand how to do, and i find the results allways look smashing! I recommend it to anyone looking to find out more about makeup or wanting to try different looks.

ON the other hand, I must say that as a woman who wears makeup every day (tho about half those days I only wear mascara) I do *not* consider my makeup a "mask". I don't wear it because I feel bad about myself, rather, I wear it because I feel good. I am beautiful, wearing makeup only enhances that. I can expierement with different looks for myself, not because I'm unhappy with the one in the mirror, but because it's fun! Life isn't a dress rehearsal- every day is a new act, with a diffent costume and different makeup.

People can get too wrapped up in "life" that they forget it's not real, it's not where the big focus lies. Driving to work isn't supposed to be the big focus in your day, spending time with yourself in the car listening to good music and being happy is. So, some women feel compelled to wear a bunch of makeup because it's "what they do" or what they're wrapped up in, and they forget to focus on what *really* makes them beautiful. But, it's not fair to say that all women who wear makeup (be it a little or a lot) are like that, because we're not! Some of us just do it for fun!

He was also very well-known for doing makeovers on Oprah where he changed everyday women into celebrity look-alikes.

Sadly, Kevyn Aucoin died of a brain tumor in 2002. He was a true artist.

thx for spelling it right, one. I didn't know about his death- it is truly sad, as I really like his stuff.

Kevyn Aucoin. Yeah, get his book!

For those who look good natural, that's wonderful. I'm not one of them. I don't want to embrace my natural look, as it's quite a bit less than the enhanced version. I can't remember the last day I went bare faced. Makeup is part of my morning routine. It goes on early in the morning, gets touched up throughout the day, and doesn't come off until I know I'm in for the night and there won't be any visitors.

To me, it's like my outdoor clothes. I'm not ashamed of my nude body, but that doesn't mean I'm going to display it to the world.

Yes - Kevyn Aucoin was a genius! I have two of his books, Making Faces and Face Forward, and they are wonderful. I learned a lot from him..

I love experimenting with makeup and rarely go a day without some form of application. I usually spend about 10 minutes, with most attention going to the eyes. My indispensible tools are eyeliner, eyelash curler, mascara, blush and lipstick. However I don't feel less attractive without it. If I'm playing soccer or working out, I don't bother applying any.

Depending on the day and my mood I can be low-key and natural or all-out "gussied" up. Makeup is fun, it's one of the best parts of being a girl. ;)

imperfect_anya 02-08-2006 06:11 PM

Foundation
Mascara and curl lashes
Lipgloss
Eyeshadaow, light for daily/ bright or dark for special events

I wear it almost on a daily basis and kinda feel naked without it. I absolutely loooove shopping for it. It makes me feel creative as I put it on and adds a needed femininity to my personality.

astrahl 02-10-2006 12:22 PM

I wear make up to work... eyeliner and lipgloss, MAYBE some shadow. Most other times I do without the stuff altogether.
I love shopping for the colors, but I can have a pat of shadow for years without making a real dent in it.

TotalMILF 02-12-2006 08:08 PM

I never wear makeup. I view it as a waste of time and money for me. Yeah, I'm lazy.

pyreglow 02-19-2006 02:49 PM

bisha 02-20-2006 11:15 AM

I never used to be into make-up that much, but in the last two years or so I've been wearing on a daily basis at least foundation, a bit of blush and mascara. I like funky eye shadows for going out, but I never tend to get too elaborate - I really like the soft, glowy look.

However, I have a bit of a problem that maybe you ladies could help me out with. I have darkish skin, (not too brown but certainly not white either) - I'd say a kind of fair asian (pakistani) complexion, and I can never choose a good lipstick colour. If I go for muddy red colours or really light, pink colours my lips stand out far too much, and as of yet I can't pull off the bright red lipstick. I have black hair which contrasts quite a lot with my skin colour, but I just cannot find a good colour for my lips. It's truly the bane of my make-up life. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

maleficent 02-20-2006 12:18 PM

when picking a red lipstick, it helps to know what the undertones on your skin are... you supposedly can tell them by looking at the underside of your wrist...

anyone can wear red lipstick -- you just have to pick the right red...

I'd honestly suggest going to a makeup counter - like Prescriptives, if it's avaiable in the UK, and having them to a do a color p rint to find your best colors....

taboo 02-21-2006 07:17 PM

maybe try a more nude shade of lipstick with gloss on top.
Like a light cream colour...I dunno..you just have to keep trying to find teh right match! If you can;t find a good lip colour, focus more on your eyes, and just wear gloss

sunkssd 02-25-2006 08:56 AM

I wear foundation, mascara, and lip gloss usually. If I am going out, I do put on eye shadow. I don't wear blush because I have really rosy cheeks.

taboo 02-28-2006 08:18 PM

wow, I'm jealous..! I wish I had naturally rosy cheeks!!

shoegirl 03-01-2006 01:37 PM

If I'm going out, I'll put on all of the makeup (sometimes). Usually, though, I just put on some thin eyeliner, some lip gloss, and some powder. I'm a simple kind of girl.

raeanna74 03-01-2006 05:39 PM

I rarely wear ANY makeup. Wear chapstick/gloss a lot but I wouldn't qualify that as makeup as it helps keep my lips from burning and chapping.

Whenever I wear makeup for more than a couple days in a row I get acne quite a bit. I wore makeup daily in college. Now I'm home 24-7 almost so don't see a need for it.

When I do go out on a date with hubby or to a party or social function I wear it. I usually wear

Concealer
Foundation - only if the concealer doesn't blend well.
Powder
Blush
Mascara - sometimes but not always. With glasses I feel like it's not noticed anyway.
Lipstick

I've tried eyeliner and shadow but my eyes are deepset and shadowy and dark enough as it is. I want them lighter not darker. Once in a great while I'll wear a very pale or whitish color shadow with a little irredescence to it. That does work but the dark colors are terrible.

As for skin care - I use Neutrogena pore refining cleaser, toner and moisturiser. I've tried other stuff and this worked great. I've only used it for about 6 months. So many things I am allergic to but neutrogena has these and it's sunscreen that don't bother me at all.

Bryndian_Dhai 03-01-2006 11:35 PM

I wear makeup nearly every single day. Sometimes, if I know I'm not going anywhere, or its been a long week and its a lazy Sunday, I'll leave it off.

For me, though, makeup is more than just a part of my everyday routine... I have very sensitive, very pale skin, and my makeup is part of my protection against sun damage. I understand that makeup isn't natural... and that's part of its appeal. I have an opportunity to even out uneven coloring, camouflage splotches or imperfections. I can play up my eyes, which are a little small (I've never had a compliment on my eyes when I was without makeup, but I hear compliments all the time when I do have it on), I can fill out my lips, I can do a lot of things that help make the most of what I've got and play down the stuff I'd rather not have. *shrugs* I don't believe in plastic surgery, but makeup isn't permanent.

I spend a lot of money on my makeup... I'm a bit of a junkie, lol.... Thanks to my drag queen friends, I wear M.A.C. almost exclusively. My routine goes like this:

Oil of Olay Sensitive Skin moisturizer, whether I'm wearing makeup or not (its got an SPF factor)
Color palette for blemishes (green for pimples and red spots, pink for undereye circles)
Concealer
Foundation
Powder
Eyeshadow
Eyeliner
Mascara
Blush
Long wearing lipstick if I have someplace important to be, tinted balm if not (Burt's Bees, usually)

Every single night, whether I wear makeup or not, I use Oil of Olay's Night Effects facial cleansing cloths, and then moisturize my face with Oil of Olay's Sensitive Skin moisturizer. I use an overnight lip balm from Blistex.

*shrugs* It might sound like a lot, but its really not. And I haven't had a new freckle or a sunburn on my face in nearly 15 years. *grins* And I'm a beautiful woman, if I do say so myself. hee hee

So what color undertone goes with what color red? I have blueish undertones - I know that for a fact. Would I go with the darker/bluer reds??

maleficent 03-02-2006 09:26 AM

I had found an article on it at one point... and now can't find it again... and it suggested colors (OK they were using high end lipsticks, like Chanel) for skin undertone, and hair color, etc... but you could always use the color as a suggestion and go hunting at cvs or walgreens for less expensive products...

There are reds that have a brownish base, some that are more plummy, some that are more blue-y - (I'm not color aware enough to know what color is which though)...

I'll keep digging for the article

Sage 03-02-2006 11:24 AM

From what I understand, red lipstick comes in three forms- yellow reds (which are progressively making their way from red to orange), blue reds (which progressively make their way from red to purple) and "true" reds, which (I think) progressively make their way from red to brown.

According to marie claire's book "hair and makeup"-

Fair Skin- nude, rosy brown, beige pink, and sheer red lip colors
Medium-Toned skin- berry tinted gloss, plum, reddish brown, sheer chocolate, and deep red lip colors
Olive Skin- natural lip colors like rosy beige, deep red, sheer brown
Dark Skin- red, burgundy, blackberry, peach, purple, and caramel
Asian Skin- raisin, plum with brown undertones, red, and mauve

Kevin Aucoin doesn't say anything in the way of picking a good lip color, but I think that's because he likes to expierement so much.

The way I found a good red was to go to the MAC counter and get the fabulously gay makeup guy to help me pick one- tried on about seven different colors to find the one I wanted. OH, you're in London, honey get thyself to a Sephoria! I know they have at least 365 different colors of lipstick in their signature line alone- take a friend and make some time to try on a lot of the different reds. Don't just pick a red based on what you've been told, just look at the colors and pick the reds that appeal to you! Try and get a salesperson to help- but only if they're competent and act like they've got some training in making someone look good. good luck!
