Prescription Changed

I've been on the pill for 4 months. I started on Ortho-tricyclen and the worst side effect was nausea. The nausea was pretty bad (I only threw up twice in 4 months, but some nights I just wanted to die). It didnt' matter what time of day I took the pill, or what I ate with it (but I had to eat something). My mood swings and migranes all but disappeared. So I went to the doctor and she put me on Ortho-tricyclen lo to see if it would help me at all. At the end of my first week of the lower dose, the nausea isn't as intense. I have been more moody, but it could be stress related. And I have been incredibly hungry (also possibly because I've been incredibly busy).

Has anyone else made the switch to a lower dose (or a complete switch to Ortho-tricyclen lo) and noticed anything similar? Of course, I'm going to stay with the lower dose for another month or two to see what happens when my body adjusts to the dosage. But I honestly don't remember the last time I was this hungry!

Estro-step is the ONLY one I can take....no nausea, no mood swings (other my normal ones lol) migraines are cut WAY down. No weight gain...no increased appetite

Ortho (both kinds) made me feel..atlernatley...like I wanted to kill or die I hated the things

Why not just try something all together different??

Why put up with any side effects when there are so many other types of birth control?

I use Nuva Ring and have ZERO side effects.

The side effects are minimal so far, and I am trying something new. I also think it sucks to have to experiment with different prescriptions to find the one that works best.

Ortho tricyclen....http://www.orthotri-cyclen.com/about/howworks.html
Quote:
Just like your natural levels of hormones vary throughout your cycle, so do the hormonal doses in ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN, delivering three levels instead of just one. So you get the right amount of hormones throughout your cycle to prevent pregnancy—with a low dose.

As you go through your normal cycle, every 28 days or so, the pituitary gland releases hormones that signal the ovaries to prepare an egg and send it to the uterus—to be fertilized.

However, when you take ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN, which contains two types of hormones (norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol), it inhibits this process from occurring and, as a result, no egg is released. It also thickens the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus. So it's easy for you to prevent pregnancy.

When I started on the ortho-tricyclen, I ended up gaining something like 30 pounds that have been a pain in the ass to get rid of. For the first week of taking it each time, I was nauseous and dizzy and got horrid headaches. Then, the week I was OFF, for the first few days, I'd get the same thing. For the rest of the time it would kind of level itself off. I want to get rid of this weight before I start taking something else.

I've gone from ortho tricyclen to ortho cyclen (monophasic - steady dose of hormones) and had no major side effects with either. Side effects are notoriously difficult to predict. Keep talking to your doctor till you find something that suits you.

I never tried ortho tricylen...i was on ortho novum though, and I gained quite a lot of weight and it made me queasy. I agree with a previous poster, you can't tell how something is going to affect you until you take it, especially if you are already sensitive to other meds or something. Try something else...its worth it!

I haven't had any major nausea to speak of in the past 3 weeks! And I think being hungry was just a result of not being nauseated all the time. I'll try another month to see if this dose really does work better than the other one. I think my next step in finding a prescription that fits would be a monophasic pill like lurkette mentioned.
