Raising the pitch of your voice
My friend and I are having an argument, so please help me out by giving me some feedback.
When do you raise the pitch of your voice and why do you do it? I'll wait to tell you why I voted the way I did until more of you have responded. |
I few years back I took a class at THe New School to control the pitch of my voice. It really got me paying attention to how I speak.
I notice that when I am annoyed or angry, my voice lowers by an octave, probably because I am trying to control it more to keep from yelling. Now I still feel my voice going up when I'm really nervous in social situations. |
LoL, I notice when people talk on the phone, their voices get higher. I find it kind of annoying, but you cant help it. I do it to, so Im in the process of changing that.
|
I'm not a yeller, but my voice does go down an octave, even if soft, when I'm angry. When I'm making coochie faces and sounds at animals, or babies, I get high pitched, and my family picks at me mercilessly over it. Oh well, the babies and animals love me, not them.
*Edit: Just said my at work phone answering speal, and my voice goes up then to, trying to sound friendly. |
The pitch of my voice goes up a lot while I'm at work. We're supposed to be cheery and happy and polite all the time, and it is usually forced enthusiasm. It's also really loud at work. Who knows.
|
I do it around a lot of people. When I'm in the company of people I have to act polite to, with my boyfriend, with animals, with babies, when I get excited.
Yeah...I'm a goof. |
I voted for when i'm trying to be polite. I work with public so i try to keep my voice pleasant and light in tone, thus it's a bit higher in pitch. And when i answer the phone as well.
|
I only intentionally raise mine when I'm doing the baby/ animal talk stuff. They love it, even if I sound like a complete idiot. :D
I know I don't change it when I answer the phone, I use my sexy voice then. ;) |
when im being polite, i'll raise the pitch. also when im on the phone, partially because ive been told if i use my natural tone when im leaving msgs, its hard to hear.
|
I tend to raise mine when I'm speaking to infants, I get louder though if I'm tense or excited. I tend to talk quite loud. Hubby reminds me often when I start doing it. It's not the pitch that I raise in nervous situations. In fact if I'm angry my voice can get quite low.
|
There's good reasons for all of this.
Smaller animals have smaller vocal cords and chests and produce higher-pitched sounds (usually, there are exceptions of course). So when we are trying to sound nonthreatening or submissive, we make our voices sound higher, smile, and generally act ingratiating. Sometimes we do this to be friendly, too, or to talk to small things like babies. Larger and more dominant animals have deep voices and most of them have a growl, including us. When we are angry, we stand up, loom, lower our voice and growl. |
i do it when i get excited.

Phone... (not always)
Talking to hubby in that "cutesy" way. (baby talk for adults) grandma, babies, animals. |
I use to do it to old people but I work in a nursing home so I'm pretty much over it. Plus older folks can't hear the higher pitches so I've learned to naturally lower my voice when people have difficulty hearing me. But my voice goes up about 3 octaves when I get excited about a pet and 1 or 2 with a baby.
|
When I see some thing really cute. When I get happy. I also do it when I am having a good time with friends and what not. most of all its when I get excited.
|
The pitch of my voice goes up whenever I want to be sure I am heard.
|
I think I must do it when I'm trying to be polite. I never noticed until my sister pointed it out to me. Now, I try to be more aware of it and keep my voice at its regular pitch. Besides, who likes being polite? ;)
|
I definitely do it when I am doing the baby talk thing, or talking to animals. Dogs love that stuff. :)
|
I had more than one... but I guess the most is when I am polite... I do it to babies.. but I'm not around them too often anymore since they all grew up. And also one that wasn't up there is when you are "telling a story that makes you anxous or upset..." Something like that.
|
The pitch of my voice is already so high that I sound like a pixie, I wouldn't notice if it was higher (the dogs might though).
