AAAGH! NO! HELP!
I recently picked up a UTI, and just went to the doctor to get antibiotics for it. Hopefully this will be over soon, as I do not wish this upon ANYONE.
Now, everyone is telling me that the antibiotics will probably give me a yeast infection after this is over. Is this true? If it is true, is there anything I can do to prevent it? What if I get more of the same antibiotics and take them for an extra week? I really hate yeast infections, and having one right after a UTI sounds like pure and utter hell to me.

The yeast infection is sort of a given with antibiotics --
Drink lots of pure cranberry juice - not the ones that are almost all sugar (health food stores sell them) and wear cotton undies You can also try increasing consumption of yoghurt - with active cultures and acidolphus (or whatever it's called-- it's not in every yoghurt) (You probably know this, but if you are on birth control pills, antibiotics can play havoc with them, rendering them somewhat ineffective.) From everything I have ever heard, and from my yearly bouts with bronchial pnemonia, which is cured by antiobiotics,, it just happens.

It could be true - depends on your body. I get yeasties at the drop of a hat, so antibiotics usually do give me one. You can ask your doctor for a couple of preventive doses of diflucan, and you can take supplements like Azo Yeast (find it at any drug store) or Yeast Fighters (Twin Labs makes it - I get it at Whole Foods). You can also try eating a low-sugar diet rich in veggies for a few weeks, and do all the things you normally would do to avoid a yeast infection - don't wear tight clothes, wear cotton undies, if you don't sleep naked already at least sleep without undies. Good luck!

The only antibiotic that ever gave me a yeast infection was penicillin. I now tell dr's I'm "allergic" to it so they won't try to make me take it.
![]() These are all good suggestion on avoiding yeast infections. I think I'll save this!

Well, I am allergic to penicillin, so I am safe there.
Yeah, I knew about the birth control thing- condoms till the next pack! I also can't stand the taste of cranberry juice, so I get cranberry pills from the health store- no sugar in them, and you can take up to 12 a day. I will wear the cotton. I hate both kinds of infections, and I wish the one would come without the other. Check the lounge, because I am posting another thread related to this.

I used to get UTI's all the time for about a two year time span, and the antibiotics never caused me to have a yeast infection... Anywho, water is your friend

Yeast infections are common after taking antibiotics. This is because you always have bacteria in your body. Good bacteria that eats up sugar and other things that bad bacteria would/could live off of. If you take antibiotics it kills off all the good AND bad bacteria. You're vagina is then unprotected by these mini soldiers. Yeast is not a bacteria so taking more antibiotics won't help. Yeast is a fungus - much the same kindof thing that causes Athletes foot.
Since yeast thrives on sugar (you can't make bread without sugar for the yeast to eat up) then limiting your sugar intake can help prevent the growth of the yeast. Unsweetened cranberry juice of those cranberry tablets are a good choice. This is because it affects the pH of the Vagina and makes the environment in the vagina inconducive to yeast growth. Also helps cleanse the bladder and keeps the pH right there too. I take acidophilous tablets (Good bacteria) that I can find at any helath food store or even at Walmart. You can also eat Yogurt with "live cultures" meaning they used live good bacteria to curdle the milk. That live bacteria can help slow the growth of the yeasties. Last time I had a UTI my Dr suggested a bath with Epsom salts as its supposed to be soothing to the outside of the urinary tract. It was and I recommend it myself. Good suggestions by everyone else here as well.

I hate UTI's but I get them often because i am rather stupid. I get them from bubble baths but I just love to take them. Finally after the last painfull bout with a UTI I learned my lesson. I have never gotten a yeast infection from an antibiotic. Well, I take that back once a long time ago.

Anyway, back on topic. All the advice so far pretty much hits the nail on the head. The only things I can really add are try to avoid excess carbs along with sugar and make sure you do not use soap with added fragrence or dye on your vagina. Also, taking acidophilous tablets usually work for me. Good luck. Anyone who just suffers through a UTI doesn't deserve a yeast infection.... that's just cruel!! |

Actually a yeast infection is not in any way necessary. Vaginas do normally contain yeast but they also contain white blood cells (in addition to the good bacteria) which inhibit its growth. Plus, your vagina should be quite acidic, helping kill anything foreign.
In general, your vagina can take care of itself. Never, ever do anything that would mess with it! Wear panties that are a size or two too big, and always cotton. Better yet, wear none at all. Wear pants also made of cotton, and make sure the crotch of them does not touch your pussy, except when you are sitting down because then it's inevitable. Eat yogurt at least 5 times a week, and not the sweet, fancy ones, like Yoplait, because they are sweeter than candy (Hershy bar: 28 grams of sugar. Yoplait Nouriche: 42 grams!!). Instead, get a natural, organic, PLAIN yogurt like Brown Cow Farm, and sweeten it yourself with artificial sweetener and vanilla. Eat less that 80 grams of simple carbs (includes, sugar, and starch from corn, potatoes, and other high-glycemic foods) every day. 0 grams is better :P Unsweetened cranberry juice will burn a hole in your stomach, but you'll thank it anyway, because it will also treat the UTI. Also try blueberry juice. Don't douche! Don't use tampons! Nothing belongs in there but penises ![]() And finally, never ever ever ignore a UTI even for an hour! Those nasty buggers will spread like a rumor and end up in your kidneys with less than 12 hours' delay. Go straight to your doctor and sit in the waiting room until he will see you just to make you go away.
