Professions...can't decide on anything.

I hope I posted this in the right place. I guess this is just where I feel most comfortable placing it.

To begin...I'm 25, have very little college under my belt and am sick of waiting tables. Moneywise it's pretty much the best I can do without a really developed skill.

I really would like to get an education so that I can do something I enjoy for the rest of my life. I know that's totally idealistic. Everybody wants that.

I guess I was wondering if any of you ladies have really cool professions that you love, or maybe something that your s/o or friends do.

Thanks. :)

I would say to try and get your education in something you love or are good at.

School is not for everybody but it can take you places. I have been in school for 7 years now (working towards Ph.D.) and it is rough at times but I love it.

Yeah, I agree with Plummie, try and find something that you can both study and love

Do whatever you feel comfortable with. If you decide to go back to school, then good luck! I hope everything works out for you. :)

The way I see it, you spend so much of your daily life at work that you had better like your job A LOT! I'm very lucky as I have what I consider the best job ever. I have two great bosses who give me total control over what I do, no-one looking over my shoulder. I work in the most relaxed and laid back office ever...I mean how many places can you work at where the boss can wander in and watch porn with you?! Truly! I am technically an executive secretary aka slave :D and I just love it.
My advice - expand on something you already are interested in and enjoy. Good luck!

^^^Hehe...your boss watches porn with you. Why, God, can I not have a job that cool.

Funnily enough, the same day I posted this, I was at work in the evening and one of the fellas at a table I was waiting on told me that I have a fabulous voice and I should get into broadcasting. I thought it was kinda weird (cause I'm one of those people who belives in signs)...I decided to check that out among many other things.

I don't know. There are soooo many options.

My bf and I were talking the other day and I was explaining to him how I would just hate to invest my time and money and come out of school, work for two months and decide that I HATE what I've gotten an education to do.

G0dd3ss: that happens. BUT! it's not the end of the world. I changed majors 2 years into a 4 year degree and had to start all over from the beginning. my new roommate's girlfriend, on the other hand, didn't decide she didn't like her career path till she was out of school and done it for like 6 months. her solution? get a Masters in something she's more interested in! :) she's currently finishing up (don't ask me what she's doing, I'm not sure!!), and to listen to her talk, she has NO regrets.

moral: you never screw up, you just take detours in your life. ;) good luck finding what you want to do!

No matter what you choose it doesn't exactly mean that you have to stick with it. A degree in anything gets you through so many doors that would be closed without a degree and it doesn't always matter what degree it is. Even if you think you hate the career choice once your done it doesn't mean you are stuck. Start the education and you'll learn what you like as you go. Many students don't even know what they're going for exactly until they are a year or two into it. Once you start taking the courses for your major you'll get a clearer picture of that profession. Another thing I did when choosing is went and talked to people in those professions. Ask them what kind of education they have and what they like/dislike about their profession. Everyone loves to talk about themselves. You'll get good responses I'm sure. Good Luck. Personally I have an Elementary Education degree and I have been a teacher, daycare provider, college staff, computer technician, and production control engineer just to give you an idea of what can happen.

Depends on when you asked me... for probably 5 years I just knew that I was going to be a neurosurgeon, that was what I WANTED to do, and then I started reading, and civil engineering became my passion, so I actually went to school for that.
I -hated- my classes, and I know why, they dumped us directly into the engineering part of it before teaching us the mechanics of it............... that and they took away time from me being with Jaid (notice I dropped out and was married by the end of the semester).
Right now, I'm looking at going back to school after my youngest daughter gets into school (not sure yet whether I mean preschool, kindergarten or first, but definitely by the time she's in second grade).
My mind may change about what I want to do, but for the moment, I'm looking at a double major in math and spanish and then being a highschool teacher after I get my education cert.

^^^ that sounds really cool. I need to remember that no matter what, at least I will walk out more knowledgable in something .

And I'm also begining to realize that the only thing I really have is time , so why not go ahead and spend it. It's not like I have so much else to do that's really important. Well, except spend time with my boy...but I can always find some time for him.

Hey godd3ss, I'm on the same exact boat as you! I looked into going back to school and this summer I'm going to take a class with one of the counselors. I talked with him before and he seems like a cool guy. This class is supposed to help figure out what I want to do, or at least give some ideas. I'm excited! Hope that helps some!

G0dd3ss 05-08-2003 02:22 PM

That's really cool that your school has an entire class dedicated to that subject. I think I will check around and see if a school near me has something similar.

Thanks! :)
