Can someone recommend a good massage oil?

My SO gave me an awesome hot oil massage last night, and he used up the last of the expensive basil-scented extra virgin olive oil that we had in the pantry (it was all he could find). Can anyone recommend a good commercial massage oil, or a homemade recipe?

Absolutely -- go to http://scentsandsuch.com/massage-oil.php

The oil with ylang ylang is very erotic -- and is suppose to arose sexual desire.

You know what I, as a babe on a budget, like? Good old Johnsons and Johnsons baby oil, the lavender-scented formula. It's very relaxing, and definetly on the inexpensive side.

Yep baby oil here too. Works well, smells good and that's all that matters to us. We love giving each other massages. VERY relaxing after a long day.:) And very romantic.

I prefer an unscented massage oil that i can vary to my own preferences. I've been using Apricot Kernel oil for a while, now, which is easy to find a health food store. I like to add sweet orange, rosemary, or eucalyptus oils. Also, you can beef up a basic oil's healing qualities by adding stuff that is too potent by itself, like vitamin e and carrot oil.

I've never heard of carrot oil, that sounds interesting.. I think I'd like a cinnamon scented oil, but meff doesn't know massage....yet.We're working on it :)

Those who might experience stiff joints (ok, no pun intended there-Ha!) may want to use peanut oil. It's great for arthritis or sports strains.
.....At least according to my Sensei, and she's a nurse & health therapist and all those good New Agey Things.

As for J&J Baby Oil...oh how that brings back fun and juicy memories. It works too. You can add the fragrances to it and make your own personal recipe for massage and all that implies!

Have fun.

Sunflower seed oil and Jojoba oil are both good. Baby oil is composed of mineral oil which clogs your pores and really isn't all that great for you... at all. At least that's what they taught me in school. Both of the first two oils are good for mixing, also. Throw in some cinnamon essential oil (not too much though) and you're good to go. Ylang Ylang and rose oil (much more expensive if you want good quality) are awesome if you're looking for an aphrodisiac.

I've used baby oil in the past, and I've always been put off by the smell, but I haven't tried the lavendar scented oil so I might try that. However, the other complaint I have about baby oil (or other mineral oils) is after the massage, when things progress into other activities, and I'm put off by the taste of the oil on his skin. Cinnamon oil sounds intruiging, or some of the other suggestions for organic oils. Thanks!

Thanks for the input ;) I was just wondering about the same thing the other day!! Now I am going to go and check out that link that sexymama posted ;) That site looks pretty fun, they even have 'tasty' body oils!! hehe

//edit: also wanted to ask if you have any links to those homeopathic (sp?) qualities in the oils you were talking about, I would love to check them out also!! Thanks

I'm afraid to use baby oil. You're not supposed to take your makeup off with it 'cause it clogs your tear ducts...I don't even wanna know what it'll do to the rest of me. One thing I've done is gotten plain sweet almond oil from a bath shop and added scented essential oils to it...peppermint is my favorite. It works really well, and has an added bonus in the winter when my skin gets all dry.

fyi - there's no 'Homeopathy' being discussed in this thread
(and it really is not an applicable term when discussing massage oils. there are a couple kinds of topical gels and such that are homeopathic (ie calendula, arnica) but those have a different theraputic application)

Quote:

Definition: Homeopathy
Practice of using extremely small doses of medicines and herbs to cause the same symptoms the disease causes. Homeopaths (practitioners of homeopathy) acknowledge no diseases, only symptoms.
no i'm not a Naturopath or anything, i just worked in a Health-Food store for a few years once upon a time.

so, maybe you're taking about Aromatherapy or general 'Natural Skin Care' but not Homeopathy. ;)

The base of every good massage oil is vegetable oil, preferably a variety that is light and nourishing. While virtually any vegetable oil you have on hand that is liquid at room temperature will suffice, certain oils offer cosmetic benefits that make them especially desirable for massage use. One of the most nourishing and common of these is olive oil. It is a rich oil that penetrates the skin to provide a heavy dose of moisture. However, it can have a powerful scent and overly thick consistency on its own, so you may wish to blend it with another lighter oil. One of my personal favorites is hazelnut oil. Although hard to find and slightly pricey, hazelnut oil's benefits make it well worth it. It absorbs very quickly into the skin but does not leave an oily residue behind. It also hydrates and offers an SPF of ten, not that you are likely to need it right after a massage.

Certain herbal extracts called essential oils are reputed to have aphrodisiac powers. Among the most popular of these are cinnamon, orange, and ylang ylang. When combined, the aromatherapeutic power of these oils is said to magnify. Whether or not you believe these claims, you will definitely enjoy the romantic blend of spice, citrus, and floral notes these oils create. You can find essential oils at natural health shops and over the internet. Choose those that are bottled in dark glass, as they will last longer.

Recipe

To make your massage oil, mix together a half-cup of olive oil and a half-cup of hazelnut oil in a clean glass bowl. To this, add ten drops of cinnamon oil, ten drops of orange oil, and twenty drops of ylang ylang oil. Bottle the mixture immediately after blended, as essential oils evaporate quickly when exposed to the air. Store your massage oil in a glass container since the essential oils tend to break down plastic over time. Also, keep it away from heat and direct sunlight. All vegetable can go bad over time, but heat will make them go rancid rapidly.

Most "good" massage oils I've seen use either sweet almond oil or light sesame oil as the carrier oil, not regular vegetable oil. I don't recommend using regular vegetable oil as a massage oil; there are much better choices out there. Olive oil may be nourishing, but it has a strong odor compared to light sesame oil or sweet almond oil, and does not necessarily make a good carrier oil. Light sesame is used in Neutrogena's body oil (I love their unscented kind). Both light sesame oil and sweet almond oil can typically be purchased in bulk at any hippie food co-op, along with essential oils.

I like to use lavender. It's relaxing, and it goes with my other natural bath and beauty products.

The other half and I actually use silicon based lubricant, you can get a variety of scents and flavours, heating or cooling, it doesn't interfer with condoms (being a lube) and you only need very little of it because it doesn't get absorbed by the body the way oils do.

Also almost all of these are designed to be used on sensitive skin to - consider where they're meant to be used.

Easily found at any adult themed shop or online - if you'd like advice on brands or anything I'll discuss it in PM's but trying not to spam or advertise.

As for the J&J baby oil, yeah, my partner and I tried it once but as awonderingsoul mentioned, we didn’t like the taste of it and that sort of killed the fun. However (and I cant believe I’m telling about this) we were messing around one night and got the strange idea of using mayonnaise! I know it sounds weird but it was a lot more fun than the baby oil. We stripped the waterbed to the bare bladder and dumped out a whole 32.oz jar of Kraft real mayonnaise and just jumped right in! Cleanup wasn’t so fun because we had it slung everywhere from scooping it up and throwing it at each other lol, but it was really a lot of kinky fun and was worth the experience. Would I do it again…Idk…probably, but I don’t think we’ll throw it around so much!

Ookkaayy… I guess I’m just a strange person…
