Don't be a victim - more personal safety tips
I know Jadzia Daz and some of the men at TFP have passed along some really helpful tips on how to be safe when out in the world. Here are some more. Apologies if some are redundant. For me, the more I read over them, the more I commit the tips to my sieve-like memory.
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do! 2. Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans: If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you....chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than in you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION! 3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives. 4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc.) DON'T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND DRIVE AWAY. 5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage: a. Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. b. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars. c. Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.) 6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot). 7. If the predator has a gun and you are NOT under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator can only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN! 8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, and that is when he abducted his next victim. Stay Safe. wow...I never even thought about the big van one....I'll pay closer attention now...
Last couple of years we had a problem with a crazy neighbor. Peeping tom asshole is what he was...I didn't even know he was doing it...Alpha phi went to work one night last year and when he got a few blocks away he felt he needed to come back home...I was on the computer when he came in...he asked me what was going on..."nothing" i said and he told me he just saw the neighbor guy walking quickly back to his house.....we put two and two together and figured out that all those funny noises and voices I'd been hearing where him....I was soooo paranoid after that....he would even climb over our fence in the backyard and knock over brush we purposely let grow tall, just so that he could see into our back door. thankgod he finally got kicked out by his land lord..... my tip to all of you....when your in your house at night make sure your curtains are tightly closed and if you think you hear someone outside your window and their not supposed to be there...either call the police or someone you know....it's better to be on the phone...I called my sister once when wierdo freak neighbor was wispering my name ...freaked the hell out of me....(we didn't know yet he was peeping) I called her and she came right over....scared him away.....

Something I saw on a Don't Be a Victim tv show - take a wad of singles and wrap a $20 around the outside. Keep this in a handy, easily accessable spot. If you are mugged or grabbed, take it out, show it to the guy and then throw it FAR away from you.
Another thing they talked about was dogs. The interviewer talked to several prisoners in for home invasion. They ALL said the sound of a barking dog was enough to make them pick another target - regardless of the size of the dog. Noise draws attention and attention is what the bad guys DON'T want. If you can't get a dog - get a tape of a barking dog! Of course it wasn't until I had my fourth German Shepherd (live one at that) that my parents FINALLY stopped worrying about me living alone. |

Atropos, Damn the whispering your name part really freaked me out... Mental pictures... :shudder: I'm sorry that had to happen to you, freaky freaky
DD thanks for the tips, Ever since I heard this urban legend story about a guy that had hid in womans backseat, and tried to kill her, I've always looked in my backseat before I close my door to my car. There are too many freaky people out there.

lock your doors when you leave your vehicle for anything...even just to go pay for you gas and the gas station...We had a guy mug a lady at the gas station last year....(shocked me..we live in a pretty small city) she got in her vehicle (which she had left unlocked) and he told her not to turn around because he had a knife..he took her money and ran...he was cought though...now I lock my doors all the time and look before I get in anyways.....

ARG! This thing keeps timing out or wahtever...so i lost my whole essay of how to save yourself...well im going to be blunt.
1. Aim for the penis/testicle area. Its sensitive and hurts them like hell if you even tap the testes. It can even temporarily paralyse/stunn/and blow the wind out of your attacker. Do whatever you can..twist,punch,kick,knee,bite,claw...anything!Oprah said it best when she said: "Twist and Pull!". 2. If you cant get the the gnads or its a woman attacker (hey, women can hurt people too!), pinch Very Hard at the underbelly of the arm between the elbow and armpit. Its sensitive and hurts like a bitch. Try it on yourself..but lightly...Ouch! A woman saved her life with this method..and managed to ripp the skin right off his arm..Serves him right. 3. If your attacker/rapist tries to get you to a secluded spot..try Damned hard not to! Once your away from the public area..no one can see or hear you! A lamplight at night is better than the bushes beside the sidewalk where no one can see you..or a car..where they can take you anywhere or do anything to you.. 4. Obviously never be alone when at night, even for a jog or going to the parking lot beside the restaurant/club..try to get a friend to go with you. Oh! and never try to take the same route more than twice or at the same times..try irregular schedules and paths..stalkers/attackers/rapists depend on similar patterns and predictablility of women/even men. 5. Another note onto DD's stuck in a trunk situation...in new cars all are equipped with trunk opening triggers from INSIDE the trunk..mine has a fabric loop kinda thingy..if your in an old car find whatevers inside to work at the lockings of the trunk. It can be a car jack, crowbar or even a lugnut wrench(type of bolt looseners for a tire shaped like an 'x')..if not you can use those items to attack your attacker when open the trunk. Remember..You are not a Victim..Your a SURVIVOR! Last edited by mew; 06-24-2003 at 05:56 PM.. |

Always look over your shoulder!!
Walk with your head held high and always be aware of your surroundings. Never take a crowded room or street for granted. You can just as easily be taken from these places. Learn how to kick some ass!! Have a BF, Husband, Male friend show you some basics on self defense! |
