so is it safe to assume that it is an intended design of the site not to show user post counts in thread views? either something about keeping things relatively democratic and/or reducing database load? or do post counts appear eventually after losing Rookie status?

Yes, it is intended. Everyone's input is equally valued. It doesn't matter if you have 20 posts and someone else has 2000. Both of your opinions are valid.

Slav put it well.

One shouldn't care about the total amount they post. It's not about the total amount but the quality of the posts and interaction you have here.

ok, makes sense, that's what I thought. like 2ch, sort of. I'm just not used to it after countless hours spent on boards that put a lot of emphasis on it and where people talk about their and others' count a lot. I've never really had a huge problem with it -- I fully admit to having gotten caught up in it myself, and personally I find it interesting to see peoples' counts when reading their posts -- but I could see the interest in creating a community without it.

Both of the opinions are valued but they may not always be valid.
