Now what about the rest of you?
You twisted my arm but first I need recommendations of good free webcam software that allows me to upload my webcam to the web.

WEBCAM HOW-TO (Cribbed from artelevision's earlier post in this thread.)

Any digital camera will work as long as it is seen by your capture software.
Inexpensive Logitech cams (from 60 – 100 dollar range are perfect).
Install the webcam software with as few options as possible.
You’ll be using another program for uploading your images.

Download webcam software, such as:

Chillcam from www.chillcam.com

or Webcam32 from www.webcam32.com

A trial version is available here:
http://www.surveyor.com/products/we..._info_eval.html

Install the software.

Settings:

You will be uploading (via FTP) still images at intervals (not streaming) to a server.

Ignore the software that came with the cam and use the webcam software you downloaded.

Start the webcam software with the cam connected.
The software should see the cam – recognize it – and display a cam image.
If it doesn’t

For Webcam32:
Go to file menu and select the camera as input

For Chillcam:
Go configure > Inputs > and select your cam as input device.

Now configure your FTP settings.
You are sending to an FTP Host (server)
It has an IP address of this sort: 123.456.789.123
It has an FTP login with a:
Username: xxxxx
Password: xxxxx

You will need to know the directory and filename you are sending to:
Such as “directory/filename.jpg”

You’ll be setting your image size at 320 pixels wide by 240 pixels high
Your upload time can be 60 seconds

For Webcam32
Use the Setup Wizard. It will step you through the setup process.

For Chillcam:
Go to Configure and input the settings as requested.

Select Main Event and click on “Enabled” “FTP” and “Capture 1”

OK
You should be good to go.

NOTE:
I’ll be editing this for clarity as the questions come in.
It’s intended as a way to get you started from scratch.
Good Luck!

I'm having trouble trying to get all my different bits of Webcam software to behave.

I got chillcam working at one stage but then it stopped after messing around trying to install a Logitech utility.

The lastest download for my cam doesn't seem to like my old version of imagestudio. But the new download has better zoom tracking controls.

Busy tonight. I'll fiddle with it all again tommorrow night.

Techno nightmare week for me. Nothing wants to go smoothly.

I don't really get it. None of the webcams seem to be on. They all have the same pictures on them -refreshed and repeated. Do I have to have a certain number of posts before I can see them?

The webcams are users who want to share. They update their cams whenever they get a chance.

This whole idea is way cool. I consider a lot of the cam pics to be a form of folk art. I love them

now, this is the eternal question, isn't it?

In other (more cam-related) news, I have a cam for my PC, but no driver for a macintosh, so i guess i'm outta luck for now. Pity, that.

Anything by Logitech is supposed to be good. Also, cams by Creative are cheaper, generally, but about as good. Depends on the purpose and somesuch.

The very best webcam software EVER is ConquerCam. I even paid the 10 bucks for the full version (very worth it) and that includes lifetime free updates.

I could have sworn your cam's been up for at least a day or two now.

I used Conquercam a couple of years ago, it was the best at the time, while the picture quality sucked a bit and the thing crashed now and then, but for the most part it was awesome. Wonder how it is doing nowadays...

I'm not sure, haven't kept up with the market in a coupla years, but I would say a decent web cam is between 15 and 40 bucks, depending on the deal you get. You can spend more of course, but in my experience having a web cam is rarely something that turns into a hobby you want to pour money into. Go with a cheap one and if you still wanna "cam" in 2005, think about upgrading.

Ya, but don't get a cheap logitech like we did. I think next we'll invest in a nice quality Creative cam for just $60.

Ok, I need to find a place to host ours, now..........WE NEED MORE CAMS UP IN HEA!
