How To Post a Picture on the TFP
Halanna mentioned in the junk food thread that she's not sure how to embed pictures. I sent her a PM with this information, but I thought others might not know how to post images. Hence, a how-to thread.
Hopefully I'm not too confusing! If anyone who reads this can explain it in a better way, go for it! ------------------------------------------------------------------- At the top of the "Quick Reply" box at the end of any thread you look at, there are a bunch of little images. These are tools. You probably recognize a couple of them. If you click on the big B, it will make your letters bold. It will look like funny code with brackets [] and a slash/. Your words won't look bold until you click the post button. Italics and underline work the same way. The little globe with sunglasses will allow you to post a link to another website. The little mountain with a yellow background will allow you to post an image. If you click "Go Advanced" rather than "Post Quick Reply", you will have many more tools available. I'm not sure how to use all of them, but I do enjoy adding smileys and many other people like writing in fun colors. If you can bold your words, you can embed pictures or even post a link. It's the same process. You just have to do a little extra work to find the picture or website to link. PICTURES! First, find a picture that you would like to embed. I usually use google image search if I'd like a specific product. For instance, if you search for "smoked almonds" this is one of the first images you will come across: Ok! So you typed in "smoked almonds" to your google image search. Then you have a bunch of little pictures to choose from. It will look like this: When you do this search yourself, click on the image that is your favorite. It will bring you to a website, but there will still be a little bar across the top of the screen that says google. It will look like this: When you're on that page, click on the blue underlined words "See full size image". Your image will show up on a page all by itself. Now, look at the address bar. It should say something that starts with http:// and ends with either .jpg or .gif. This is the URL for the image. Highlight your image's URL by clicking on it. Copy it (right click then choose copy from the menu). Now, go to the thread where you'd like to post your image. I usually have the thread open in another window while I do the image search so I can go back. In your reply box, click on the "insert image" tool. This looks like a little mountain with a yellow sky . A little window will pop open. Paste your image's URL in the box. The little window will look like this: Look at the URL you just pasted, make sure it doesn't say http:// twice. Click "Ok". The text that you will see will have IMG in brackets, then the URL, then /IMG in brackets. This is code for your image. Now type the rest of your response to the thread. You can write your response before or after your code (or both!). Just make sure that the code for the image has no spaces or disruptions. Here is an example of a post about roasted almonds with an image in the middle and the last word italicized: Have fun posting with pictures!

This just demonstrates how much more patience you have than I.
Nicely written, very informative. Well done.

I explained how to post pictures somewhere obscure, so I'm glad this is in a more relevant location that'll eventually prove itself worthwhile.
A secondary bit of advice: do not trust google or certain other sites to hotlink your desired picture. It works only a percentage of the time that a search-queried pic hosted on a -bandwidth-conscious site will properly display the picture. If not, it'll show a "no hotlinking from 'such-and-such' site allowed". Instead sign up for a photobucket or flickr account like both genuinegirly and Crompsin allude to above, or even an imageshack account works well enough on TFP, and they will host your photos for message board purposes, free of cost. (photobucket and imageshack take down offensive/vulgar photos, but flickr has some more lenient rules about tasteful nudity.)

I recommend trying out posts using this feature in the Testing Board: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/testing-board/

if it doesnt work and you stop fiddling with it let me know
try looking for a link in flicker that starts and ends with [IMG ] http :// www . enter the url here. com [/IMG] otherwise you can get the URL, and then click on the "insert image" button above, and insert your URL in the popup box and you should be good to go.

Flickr has recently switched around their website. It is now tricky to find the appropriate website for the actual image. I have been meaning to write a new tutorial on this process. Hopefully I can get to it today for you.

Thanks. I've already used my photobucket account to posting pics, which is no problem, other than I already had the pic in flickr. What I don't get about flickr is, that even though I see Grab a link option for the pic, it does not work, nor did the direct browser pic address in forum image-tags bring up any photo in preview.

I used to run into this problem sparingly back in 2006-07, but as flickr has grown more popular over the years, so has the clientele of "social photographers", and their savvy is what keeps them going. More often nowadays they disable the "downloading" of their photos, and if you just try to 'right-click, copy IMG address', you'll likely find that the photo url you actually copied was something akin to 'spaceball.gif', a placemark url to deter to hotlinkers / image thieves. The fotogs there just want credit to their work, so they risk losing followers by not allowing their photos to be easily accessed / easily shared, by making sure (or at the very least, trying to disallow) any photo that they have created to be stolen, unless it is properly obtained through direct channels and/or licensed legitimately. If you'd like continue to use flickr as some sort of search hub for sharing nice pics, that's fine. I use it like that most oftentimes. But be aware of the rules of using the site. If you'd like to not deal in the hassle of always asking the respective photographer's permission to use this photo in this place, then I'd suggest you tweak your 'advanced search' settings, and set it to "CC / creative-commons / free-use with attribution". - - - Post-EDIT: Whoa. Was this thread dormant in this forum here all along, or did something cross over? I could have sworn this was still on the front page of Tilted Knowledge & How-To (it's a slow forum, I know).

To show your own pictures Bagatelle, like Dlish said you should have no problem hosting pictures.
From your picture, click on "Share This" Above the picture. Click the "grab the HTML/BBCCode bubble From there, look for the img tag that ends with the .jpg and copy and paste that into your post. It will end up looking like this: I've attached the screenshot with the instructions in a separate post.

Look for the red boxes on your page and you should be able to get the code to post the actual HTML link.

Glad to help! It took me a couple tries to remember how to do it so I understand your frustration
Always good to brush up on something from time to time.

Thanks, amonkie! Your method there is “quick & dirty.” It gets the information, it’s fast and effective… but I know another method for those who don't want to pick out the relevant piece of data amidst a sea of code. I’ve shown the entire process below, including screen shots to guide someone, from logging in to finding the web address.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As you can see from amonkie’s screenshot in the post above, Flickr recently updated their website. It’s a sleek design, and visually appealing. But the new format makes it tricky to access the basic web address for each image - a crucial step when you want to include one of your images in a post. Below I have given you a series of screen shots and written instructions to help you find the unaldulterated web address (URL) from each image while navigating the new Flickr. Go to Welcome to Flickr - Photo Sharing and log into your flickr account. To get to your photostream, click on “You” Choose your image of interest from your photostream. Click on it. This directs you to the image’s Photo Page. Right-click the image. You will see an option to view your image in a number of sizes. Click on the blue words that coorespond with the image size you desire. Generally when posting on TFP, people usually use “Medium 500” images. If you are posting your work in Tilted Photography, you may choose to share a larger image. When you click on those blue words, you will be directed to a page that looks like this. The image shows up in the actual size you choose and its cooresponding text is black, the rest of the sizes are indicated by blue text. Note that there are a number of image sizes available that were not mentioned earlier. If you are making a new avatar for TFP, you will want to use the Square or Thumbnail. Choose the size you prefer. Right-click the image. You will see a menu. At the bottom of this menu, left-click on “Properties”. A window will pop up with some information on the image, including its web address, or URL.

Hmmm. I don't remember how I linked an image last week, but apparently it didn't work and instead posted some pretty disgusting image. I will follow these instructions in the future.

To note: you probably (I'm assuming) hot-linked an image from some unfamiliar website that does not appreciate having their hosted images, as well as their bandwidth, stolen, (I think ebaumsworld might have this feature installed) just because their images are indexed by the GIS (Google Image Search) ; therefore, some crafty / fed-up admins instead create a 'poster hover image' that states something along the lines of "this image was originally posted at ___. go there to view images without hassle.", along with sometimes very unsavory images to deter those that would think twice about just copying+pasting image URLs from anywhere, all willy-nilly. It's not very friendly, but I suppose they think the same of those anonymous users who unsuspectingly are violating some website/blog/image indexer's terms of service by posting their content elsewhere on the net.
