It just the way that the community here functions. You participate, you get rewarded. There are more things than what you currently see but not available to those that juset cruise by or "lurk".
Participating is posting and getting involved in the discussions.

Indeed, pick a topic you feel at least somewhat passionate about and make a concrete, black-and-white statement about it. Reply politely and intelligently to the rousing discussion so generated and all the mysteries of the board will be revealed to you in short order.

Welcome to TFP.
I'll echo Cynth in that the more involved you get in the community here and join discussions, the more this place opens up, not only in terms of convential 'perks' but also in terms of the community spirit. It's very refreshing and stimulating, and, when you need it, comforting, encouraging, supportive. One thing I'd say though is that here on the TFP you come across all sorts of topics. And I mean topics that you never thought could even be maturely discussed and from all angles. Sometimes you may find yourself upset by some points of view. Depends on your personality, really. That's just because it's a society in its own right, with people of all ages (except minors) from all walks of life. And therefore, especially with the more hot-button topics, sometimes it may be a mature approach to know when to say your piece and when to walk away. Enjoy your time here. /welcome

Hmmm,,,,so I was looking at the terms and conditions of gaining access to the private forums and noticed that users gain access once their "level of maturity" is determined.
I've been on since April....shall I assume my demonstrated level of maturity is less than satisfactory????

MEMBERSHIP ADVANCEMENT AND FEATURES
Member participation is strongly encouraged and rewarded, though we insist that you make your contribution to the TFP as meaningful as possible. Please do not post frivolously to achieve status. Our economy does not run on post counts. The TFP has many private forums that are not accessible to new users. They are more private, sensitive and community oriented in nature and so we have a very strict screening process to gain access to them. After a brief probation period (one month at the VERY LEAST), users are reviewed by our moderators to determine if they are mature enough to participate in the private forums. Infractions of TFP policy will hinder your review and may indefinately postpone it. 250 worthwhile posts and at least two months of membership will earn you a custom avatar. 500 worthwhile posts and at least three months of membership will earn you a custom title. You CANNOT attain these privileges if you have not been promoted.

[QUOTE=uncle phil]MEMBERSHIP ADVANCEMENT AND FEATURES
After a brief probation period (one month at the VERY LEAST), users are reviewed by our moderators to determine if they are mature enough to participate in the private forums. This is what I am refering to.....can you enlighten me as to how I've fallen short after 6 months on the site?????

I'm glad you're ready to ask. Moderators read the boards all the time and respond to member's discussions and posts. We tend to notice when someone posts alot, posts crappy posts like, "Yeah what he said." or "I couldn't agree with more." or posts really good quality posts. Good or quality posts, continue to fuel the discussion, make people think, give people some reason to pause and reflect on their own position. Now mods aren't perfect, but I can say simply that we do notice new posters right away that are posting good quality posts, even those that are borderline troll/flames, but we can see through that an hopefully guide them into being contributing memebers. Personally, I haven't had time to look at all your posts, but your name here doesn't ring a bell to me. 75 posts isn't anything to sneeze at, but at the same time it's not anything to gloat over either. Again, while it's quality not quantity, the more you post, hopefully the more you'll touch that part of your brain that will post good quality posts. Don't read too much into this because well, we have lots of moderators. I can say for sure though that the moderators all talk amongst themselves about people who are contributing contributing members good and bad. We talk about ways to help guide to hopefully better discussions and contributions. good luck!
