What are you? What is your passion? What is your purpose?

well, we've had a thread on what you do for a living, and for somepeople that is what they are, it's what they're about

but for many of us its not.

some of us may sit in a cubicle all day, then go home and write poetry, or paint.

so what is it? what makes you, what is your purpose, what is your passion?

Glory's Sun 01-06-2006 12:25 PM

my purpose.. is to tell you .. that you misspelled your title

Edit: ok now that the title is spelled correctly, I'll humor you a bit.

My passion is alcohol.

not the cheap shit either.

NoSoup 01-06-2006 12:26 PM

Typically the person who starts a thread is encouraged to expand a bit on their questions - perhaps even answer them themselves to help promote discussion.

Just figured I'd throw that out for you :D

Xazy 01-06-2006 12:32 PM

I had my rebbi, ask me this question once on Purim, in front of his current students (I learned with him for 4 years, and knew him for 5 years after, before this incident happened). And he asked me this exact question. I tried talking about raising a good jewish family, following the commandments. And he told me NO. The purpose is to be G-ds wine pourer, his steward.

So the answer for me, is to be a servant of G-d. (can't get this one wrong, when I was told the answer, by my Rebbi).

Passion - being a good husband
Purpose - being a good father
Pursuit – Cartooning
Position - parallel
Pummeling - the pink porpoise
Progress - paltry
Personality - pusillanimous personified

Strange Famous 01-06-2006 02:50 PM

Im not a very passionate person, but since I got back from the States I do have a goal, and while I might not be passionate about it, its better than I was before.

Suave 01-06-2006 03:08 PM

I have no purpose. My passion is being.

Willravel 01-06-2006 03:15 PM

Being a father and husband, friend and confedent, musician and artist, being good samaritin and defender of those who need and deserve defending.

I'm a warrior. I was born to take life.

Carno 01-06-2006 04:31 PM

Okay I've noticed this in a few places on the internet, and I have to ask: what is it with people writing "G-d" instead of "God?"

I have no idea what my purpose in life is. I'm still figuring it out. I thought I knew when I was younger, but I was wrong. However as time goes by I feel like my true purpose is just to be in the military. Maybe killing people is my purpose. Who knows?

I have several passions, and some of them seem quite contradictory.

I found this interesting. How do you know you were born to take lives? Have you ever done it before, other than animal lives?

I am a student. Learning is my passion, which is one reason I want to go into teaching. I want to pass on my love of learning to the next generation. Idealistic? Absolutely. But if we didn't have idealists, we'd be very short on teachers.

I love school in all its aspects and I always have--I know I always will. I can't wait to go back and get my Master's.

Beyond school, I still love to learn. I read voraciously. I watch documentaries and educational television (Discovery, History, public broadcasting, Food Network [yes I love learning about food]) a lot. I have been known to do serious research at the university library just for fun. Yes, I know I'm sick. And I love to learn about everything--and I mean everything. It was very hard for me to stick with my major (English) all through school, but I did take a lot of electives (if they had a minor in human sexuality at my university, I'd qualify, and I'm one class short of a history minor). I also love to learn about people...and love to learn from people. My best friend's mom says my motto should be: "Question everything."

I know this passion for learning will last me a lifetime--my parents raised me this way and this way I shall remain.

dlish 01-06-2006 06:45 PM

ziadel..that explains your avatar :D

my purpose my calling...

civil rights/art/analysing people/nature

sadly im a builder... go figure...

Xavion 01-06-2006 06:59 PM

I'm really bad at expressing myself sometimes, but i'll give it a go, eh!

WHAT AM I?

--I don't know what i am exactly? I mean...i have a general idea of who i could be...or who i THINK i am...but my own personal oppinion would be a bit skewed and biased don't you think? I know what i want to be...and therefor know what i'm not. I'm not trying to be obtuse and vague on purpose...just truthful. I don't have a foggy clue what i am...or what i'm here for...or where i'm going...all can do is aspire to be the person that i want to become...or the person i want people to think that i am when they call me to mind. I want people to think "That guy is the nicest, sweetest, kindest, most earnest, down-to-earth, open-minded, non-judgemental, knowledgable, handy, multi-faceted guy i've ever had the pleasure of knowing." ...when the name XAVION ever comes up in conversation.

WHAT IS MY PASSION?

--Right now my passion is to build a better life for myself and become the person that i want to be. I come from shit...and i have shit now...and that's my motivation at the moment...to leave this all behind and come into the things that i know i deserve in life. ...but at the same time i want to acquire knowledge and experience on the way. That would be my other passion...the acquisition of knowledge. Don't get me wrong...i don't want to be a 'know-it-all'...but i wanna be that one guy that every knows who is just super knowledgeable about a lot of different things...he may not know a lot about them, but he has a general knowledge of all topics and subjects that you may throw his way.

WHAT IS MY PASSION?

--To be completely truthful with you guys...i honestly don't know what my passion is. I'm completely oblivious to whatever that one thing is that drives me in life and I just can't live without. You would think it would my love of music...or my love for my family...or my boyfriend...but no...and i feel bad saying this...but none of this is what i feel to be a unstoppable driving force in my life. I feel bad for not having passion...i feel like there is something wrong with me. But i wont' choose to believe it...i'll just rest comfortably with the idea that i'm a late bloomer...that i have not been fortunate enough to find my true passion yet...that it's out there for me and i just have to go and discover it. For now, my passion will be to find my true answer for this question.

Killing people is your passion? That's terrible and evil. I am fairly sure that you are serious about it too. Maybe it is time to talk over how you feel about it with a psychiatrist / perhaps a military one (sounds like you are in the military). It is ok to love serving a country, but it cannot be good to love killing...

serlindsipity 01-06-2006 07:37 PM

my passion is life. it is expression of thought, my art, my photography. i live to love and i live harder to learn everything i can.

Taking what is not yours is theft. You were born to hurt and steal? Not likely. You were born into a community of people that has convinced you that violence and acting tough is the pinacle of glory. You seemingly don't understand the value of life because of your cavalier and apathetic attitude. If you have taken a life, I feel great pity for you, whether you think it is justifiable or not.

raeanna74 01-06-2006 07:45 PM

My passion is learning. I love learning new things. I could read testbooks, encyclopedias, or dictionaries all the time. I enjoy expanding my realm of experience and knowledge.

My purpose is teaching. I have always felt driven to teach and to pass on what I learn to others. I'm thrilled to learn new things and can't help but want to share that enthusiasm with others.

What am I? a wife, mother, and teacher.

IMO, there are no higher callings than these.

BadNick 01-06-2006 08:08 PM

For me, my main thing is devotion to my wife and children; whatever they need. Other family and people have a place somewhere in that picture, too.

After that, I find myself probably too obsessed with cars, usually the one I have; so now I spend way too much energy, and some money, too, on researching, learning, and making it into what I want and keeping it there but it's a never ending process.

Meditrina 01-06-2006 08:09 PM

These questions are very thought provoking, made me look deep inside myself to see if there was an answer.

Who am I? I am first and foremost a mother.

My purpose? To help my children grow up into wonderful adults, to teach them all that I can, to love them forever.

My passion? To keep learning more about myself and the world around me. Ultimately, to pass this knowledge on to my children.

I also believe that these 3 things are constantly changing, nothing is set in stone. It depends on what path you are on.

tobasco 01-06-2006 08:35 PM

still looking for mine..

Biscuit Buns 01-06-2006 09:58 PM

My passion is science and metaphysics.

My purpose is to learn and teach.

Who am I? A ray of sunlight to my son :D , a chemist, a spiritual seeker.

Quite a bit more than that, actually, but that's the down and dirty. :p

settie 01-07-2006 12:59 AM

-I am passionate about connecting with people. Those strong emotions that can connect two people together whether its friendship or love.
-I am passionate about helping people in any way I can. This past year I significantly changed one person's life, and I was so touched when he told me that, its what strives me to do more for others.

What is my purpose?
-To strongly connect with people and help the willing.

not in the military, tried, but they had good reason not to take me, which I don't care to get into.

meembo 01-07-2006 06:35 AM

I had different purposes and passions when I was unattached, and then I became a dad, and all my purpose and passion poured into doing that well. Now my kids are just old enough that I can see room for new purposes and passions again. Don't get me wrong -- being a dad has been the greatest joy of my life. But I feel now like I did when I was a teenager, just seeing a new set of freedoms over the horizon. I can't wait to see what I'm doing in 5 or 10 years -- I really don't know, and I like it that way!

streak_56 01-07-2006 12:07 PM

What am I: Paramedic, friend, boyfriend and general smart ass.
What is my passion: Hockey, happiness, helping people and spoiling my girlfriend.
What is my purpose: Heck if I know, I eat, breath, sleep, and sometimes feel like I have to work.

kangaeru 01-07-2006 12:26 PM

My passion is to work towards amassing the power to change the world in the best ways I can.

I can only know my own personal reality, but the things I want to do will be aimed at improving the quality of life of man. But this must be done in a way which is effective and lucrative--outright crusade is not my style.

Wanting to be the best at what I do is the means by which I can achieve this power, and with this power and the good things I can do with it I will justify all the work and time I will spend.

Of course, this isn't just because I'm a saint, I'm doing this as much for myself as for others. I want to think I have the potential to change the world around me in a way most people can't. Call me a benevolent elitest.

crow_daw 01-07-2006 08:43 PM

My passion is making sure that all of those that have given me love, caring, help, and protection receive their due, always. Everything that I can do.

My purpose......we'll see.

soul_wisdom 01-07-2006 09:34 PM

I am-Still in a daily fight to be the best person I can be, to those people I encounter in my life. But damn it's hard to turn the other cheek sometimes.......sigh......isn't it?
A good husband to my beautiful wife which for me is easier than breathing such is my love for her. A father to my amazing children and hell, even a good guy to my cats.

My Purpose-To live and experience all that I can, whether good or bad, and to learn the lesson(s) those experiences have to teach me.

My Passion-Knowledge. Truth. Integrity. and always love.

Aurakles 01-07-2006 10:26 PM

...to last, get my work done, and to be an honest man.

Tachion 01-10-2006 11:08 AM

My passion: To try and understand things from as many perspectives as possible.

My purpose: To live my passion.

I give zaidel BIG points for being honest - and starting this thread as well!

Though I certainly don't share his view, I think the point of this thread was to let people feel free to discuss their passion and purpose - without judgement.

Heck we all know some that will see our purpose as good, others bad - there is little point in affirming that knowledge.

Perhaps adding the question,

What do you think your passion and purpose will bring you in your life?

will help us understand how we see our own path relative to our passions etc.
