A recall was declared after it was found several brands of dog and cat food made by the Diamond were tainted with aflatoxin, a toxic chemical byproduct from a fungus that can grow on corn and other crops used in pet food, according to information released by Diamond Pet Foods.

The recall was announced last week for 19 separate types of dog and cat food manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods under the brand names of "Diamond," "Country Value" and "Professional."

The recall was announced for Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, Alaska, Delaware, New Jersey, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi.

The food was produced in Diamond's Gaston, S.C. plant and bearing “Best By 01-March-07” and “Best By 11-June-07” with a “G” in the code. Generally, symptoms include loss of appetite, yellow in the whites of the eyes, gums or areas where the hair is very thin, severe and persistent vomiting combined with bloody diarrhea, discolored urine and fever.

We buy from Costco, but I'm a little worried that the Rottie has vomited twice lately. It might just be coincidence, but I'm calling tomorrow to ask who supplies their Kirkland brand.
