Beware of Telephone Scam
Here in Houston the talk radio guys have been discussing the
latest scam being done by guys in a holding cell in a Jail. They call people asking the mark to make a call for them and give a number with few extra numbers that make the Mark's tel. into a call forwarding telephone. After the convict hangs up he can make all kinds of phone calls using the Mark's phone and can run up a large telephone bill for the guy who was only trying to help someone.(Someone said "If the jailbird can make one call....why can't he make that call to the person himself?" And another caller said that persons in a holding cell are allowed several phone calls. Wonder if that part is true?) Yes, in fact, often there is a payphone IN the cell (with a short cord to prevent them from offing themselves). Jailbound folk are often allowed to make more or less unlimited collect calls. This is, AFAIK, primarily true with city jails.
