Quick question about the meaning of a black flower

One of my teachers had a black flower (not a rose) on her shirt, I didn't think to ask then, but then I saw it again on someone on TV. Both were on woman of either high power or high education...not sure if that has anything to do with it. Anyone know what Im talking about and what they mean? Oh, and theyre fake, not live flowers. They are semi big, maybe the size of your palm, they have many folds, and shorter than it is around.

Thanks.

I somehow doubt this is it, but the Manhattan Museum of Modern Art has an exhibit about clever safety objects, and one of the items is a bulletproof black rose brooch

The exhibit site is interactive and there are two ways to find a picture.

First, go to: http://www.moma.org/exhibitions/2005/safe/safe.html

After clicking "Begin", you'll see a field of single plant sprouts, in earthen mounds. If you click on a mound, you'll zoom in and see a few of the exhibit items. The rose is on on the mound directly between the mound with a grass lawn and picket fence, and the mound that has molten lava on it.

Or, you can click on "Index" in the lower right corner, and browse for "Ballistic Rose" under the B. That's a lot less fun.

Here's the credits:

Yes the black flower, a symbol of a woman on birth control. She's sending out her willingness to mate and not conceive.

the black rose society is an organization that's kind of a support organization for people who are involved in alternative lifestyles - including
D&S,B&D, various fetishes, and cross-dressing. They have regular events and a beautiful 'ball' every year...

personally, I'd go for fashion statement.

The floppy, fake, looks like the cat threw it up flower made out of trendy material brooch is hot this year.

LOL and woa if it has anything to do with sex, my prof is in her 50s or 60s...not that there's anything wrong with that, just unexpected. I also doubt it is just a fashion statement, because she mentioned it had a meaning during a lecture. She said she got more respect when someone saw it. Also again, it is not a rose, or at least not the real life looking rose, although maybe it is called a rose even though it doesn't look like one.

Well looks like this may remain a mystery.

Oh and it looks different than the one in alpha phi's link.

Why not just ask her? If she said it had a meaning, she more than likely would explain it.

So, not the bulletproof brooch then? Because if it was, then maybe she was an assassin!

Was it just on one day? Because it was a symbol worn on the anniversary of John Lennon's death.

Also worn in honor of a loved one who is leaving for war or a journey for which s/he is not expected to return.

Depending on the women, it coulda been for the gothic/vampiric/bondage celebrations... even if your prof was 60. She may have a secret life.

Zeraph, you have so much to learn about people in their 50's or 60's.

Must run now... I'm off to ravage and get ravaged.

I wore a black rose to a funeral once. It was simply meant as a sign of my quiet sorrow. Now that I've depressed everyone, I hope it is a sign for the whole bdsm thing. It'd be easier than looking in the persoanls.
