Ashes to Ashes...

Fan: Dumped mom's ashes on field
Quote:

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A man arrested for running onto the field during the Philadelphia Eagles' game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday told police he was spreading his late mother's ashes.

Christopher Noteboom, of Tempe, Arizona, ran onto the field holding a plastic bag, leaving a cloud of fine powder behind.

As he reached the 30-yard line, he dropped to his knees, made the sign of the cross and laid down on his stomach. Security personnel reached him moments later and he offered no resistance as he was escorted from the field.

The 33-year-old Noteboom, a native of Doylestown, said his mother died of emphysema in January 2005, shortly before the Eagles' Super Bowl appearance.

"She never cared for any other team except the Eagles," Noteboom told WPVI-TV after he was released from custody Monday.

"I know that the last handful of ashes I had are laying on the field, and will never be taken away. She'll always be part of Lincoln Financial Field and of the Eagles."

Noteboom, a bar owner in Arizona, was charged with defiant trespass. He has a hearing scheduled for December 27.

"It's bizarre, but we have a zero tolerance for people who run on the field," Police Inspector William Colarulo said. "We especially have a zero tolerance for people who run onto the field and dump an unknown substance in a stadium full of people."

Eagles spokeswoman Bonnie Grant said the team has declined requests to spread ashes on the field.
that's a good reason for running onto the field.. I suppose...

Years back, when the father of a friend of mine passed away, this man was an avid golfer and his mother decided that he'd really want his ashes spread out on the golf course of the country club he spent so much time at... So at about 2:00am one morning... We spread the ashes on the fareway of the 11th hole.. It was the hardest hole...

If you plan on being creamated when you die, if you are planning on dying.. what do you want done with the ashes?

Charlatan 11-29-2005 08:49 AM

Can anyone say, Ricin or Anthrax? Some guy runs into a crowded stadium and dumps an unknown dust into the air... Lucky someone didn't shoot him.

As for when I die... I will be cremated... I have no idea what to do with the ashes. I don't really want a monument, I'd rather my kids spend any money I have left on themselves.

Carno 11-29-2005 08:52 AM

I guess I'd want my ashes thrown into the ocean.

Pretty much everything I've done in my life has revolved around the ocean in one way or another.

Eweser 11-29-2005 09:06 AM

When I was really into playing softball, I always said I wanted my ashes, in an urn, to be buried under the home plate of a softball field. Nowadays I'm not sure...

Jinn 11-29-2005 09:09 AM

If my organs are still salvageable, I hope I'm gutted for everything they can get out in time.. after that, I suppose cremation.. just to save space.

StanT 11-29-2005 10:24 AM

Recycle what you can, fry the rest. Dump the ashes somewhere pretty, I'm kinda fond of alpine lakes.

My wife and daughters know my specific wishes.

snowy 11-29-2005 10:47 AM

Until recently, I had no desire to be cremated. But then I began to think: since I'm an organ donor, who's to say there will be much left anyhow? I know where I want to be spread: Hug Point, Oregon. It's my favorite place on the Oregon Coast.

Perhaps this is a bit morbid, but it's also the place I'd like to be married.

Bill O'Rights 11-29-2005 10:59 AM

Never really gave cremation much thought. Just a funeral, with military honors. Military headstone, not one of those flat ones either, I want a standing one. Even if it's just the guy that has to actually mow around me, and not over top of me, someone is gonna remember that I was not only here, but also that I was a pain in the ever lovin' ass. :D

ryfo 11-29-2005 11:01 AM

Cremated, after giving away all organs then spread over my friends farm, as she will be looking after any animals I leave its sort of like I will be there as well.

guthmund 11-29-2005 11:25 AM

I'm definately getting cremated. The thought of me slowly rotting in a box under a mound of dirt...../shudders

I don't have any specific place picked out for my ashes. I'll leave that up the kids I've yet to spawn. Maybe they'll spread me some place nice (assuming that my kids, you know...like me) that reminds them of their dear old dad.

Coppertop 11-29-2005 11:36 AM

Who cares? I'll be dead. Do what thou wilt, I guess. Funerals and such are for the living, not the dead.

Craven Morehead 11-29-2005 12:02 PM

A very good friend died last spring. His son took his ashes to several race tracks (even Le Mans) as John was a huge race fan. I like that. I would consider cremation. But not to have my ashes sit in a urn on the mantle. Spread them somewhere meaningful.

I wonder if the person that ran on the field ever considered call the team to see if they would allow him to do this at another time? Wonder what the team would have said?

Sultana 11-29-2005 02:27 PM

I've always said I'd like my ashes sprinkled from the monorail at Disneyland.

But I do like Northern California too. :) In a vineyard somewhere. Drink up, me hearties!

I am honored by your murderous intentions.

cellophanedeity 11-29-2005 03:27 PM

I want to have anything useful taken out of me, then the rest put in a biodegradable box somewhere to decompose. I'd like a tree planted above me.

You know, I nice return to earth.

Willravel 11-29-2005 03:27 PM

I'd like to be shot into a star, quasar, or black hole (crosses fingers), but cost keeps getting in the way. Did you know it would cost over $1.2 million as of one year ago?

fightnight 11-29-2005 03:51 PM

I'm all about the whole donation thing as well, then have my ashes sprinkled across some of my favorite places. At this point, those would probably in in Ireland, but who knows what the next 1 to 65 years will hold, so maybe some other places too.

Demeter 11-29-2005 03:52 PM

I have no opinion...my family can make that decision...it matters not...

getwonk'd 11-29-2005 09:06 PM

I'm all for the donor thing, but I don't think it will be possible due to many ongoing health issues. I have told my family that I want to be cremated. I want to be put in an urn until all my children are grown and out of the house. Then divided into five parts so my husband and each of my children can release me in their own way and own special place. This way I will always be close if they need a mother to listen. And when the time is right I will be put to rest in a very special way.

Gilda 11-29-2005 09:50 PM

I'm an organ donor (talk to you loved ones about this, please) and I hope to have my remains cremated. Where to put the ashes, though, hmmm.

The best I've ever seen was Mark Gruenwald, a writer and editor at Marvel Comics. I know what you're thinking, Gilda, making a comic book reference? You've got to be kidding me.

Anyway, Gruenwald was the writer of a 12 issue series in the mid 1980's called Squadron Supreme. It was based on analogues of the Justice League characters in an alternate world where they decide fighting bad guys in tights isn't enough, and decide to take over the country and turn it into a utopia. Squadron Supreme was Gruenwald's favorite piece of his own work.

He had requested that he be creamated when he died, and his acses mixed in with the printing ink of a comic book, so then editor Bob Harras did just that, having Gruenwald's ashes mixed in with the ink used to print the first edition of the trade paperback for Squadron Supreme. Fans who bought that first trade literally own a piece of the author.

For me, I think I'd prefer that my ashes go somewhere meaningful to Grace, but my choice would be to have them scattered into the ocean just outside her parents' home in Hawaii. It's where I remember the two of us being happiest together.

Gilda

SERPENT7 11-29-2005 10:32 PM

Organ donor, and i suppose...buried at sea. Preferably from a sub. (a 688i, if there are any left by then!)

fantastic idea, and quite similar to the thought i've had for a few years of wanting to throw myself at the Sun when/as/if i die.

:)

OTK 11-30-2005 10:14 AM

I would like my family to sprinkle alittle bit of my ashes on all of the different continents. Since I am requesting it there will be an excuse for some great adventures... my gift to them.

BigBen 11-30-2005 12:07 PM

I would like my ashes put into a trophy. This trophy would be presented to the most outstanding military unit of the year. As an international event, soldiers would have to compete at a very high level.

The trophy would also come with a Million dollar prize, like the Nobel Prize. Think of it like the Anti-Nobel prize. He was fostering peace and science, whereas I would like to foster military skills.

Gilda, I remeber reading about this in the trade paperback and vaugely hoping I didn't have a first edition. I think it's a cool idea but... :)

GH, have no fear, I'll happily give you a viking funeral. Do you have a pool?

As for me, I want everything useful donated and the rest burned. There's a place where some friends and I camp and play music every summer. I hope they can take me there and I can spend one more weekend with them, then scatter me to the wind.

fresnelly 12-13-2005 10:39 AM

The thought of being buried in a bad suit, under an 1/8" of makeup grosses me out, so I'll be going the cremation route. I'd like my ashes mixed into the soil in a protected forest.

Remember the scene in The Big Lebowski, where they toss Steve Buscemi's ashes to the wind, only to have the cloud fly back into their faces? I'd like to avoid that.

Lucifer 12-13-2005 10:43 AM

John Prine said it best:

Please don’t bury me
Down in that cold cold ground
No, I’d druther have em cut me up
And pass me all around
Throw my brain in a hurricane
And the blind can have my eyes
And the deaf can take both of my ears
If they don’t mind the size
Give my stomach to milwaukee
If they run out of beer
Put my socks in a cedar box
Just get em out of here
Venus de milo can have my arms
Look out! I’ve got your nose
Sell my heart to the junkman
And give my love to rose
Give my feet to the footloose
Careless, fancy free
Give my knees to the needy
Don’t pull that stuff on me
Hand me down my walking cane
It’s a sin to tell a lie
Send my mouth way down south
And kiss my ass goodbye

Everytime I check in on this thread that scene comes to mind.

Just a comment: It really is surprising how little is left after you cremate someone.

Poppinjay 12-13-2005 10:46 AM

I would like to be made into soylent green.

veruca 12-13-2005 12:34 PM

I want to be cremated...and my widowed husband has to carry me around in a pink jar and sprinkle me in all the places I always wanted to go. And that way, I get to annoy his new wife too..hahahha

Same for me, Guthmund. I strongly dislike the idea of burial.

I think I'd like to have my ashes spread in a couple places. One would be the plot of land where my home has been for the last 20+ years (which will be destroyed within 6 months and replaced with suburban shit-houses... but at least the land will still be there). That is where I grew up and it is the piece of earth that I feel the most attachment to.

Another place would be somewhere over water. Perhaps a little bit in the Lake Washington Ship Canal (or Puget Sound, or Lake Washington, one of the above), and a little bit over the Atlantic and/or Pacific. Those waters bridge my three countries of origin.

Mountains are nice too. But I guess there's only so much of me. :)

ziadel 12-13-2005 03:54 PM

I've stipulated that after I am cremated I want my ashes tossed in the nearest dumpster.

cause they're just ashes.

Martian 12-13-2005 05:50 PM

In the bin.

Seriously, I have no attachment to this mortal plane of ours. I'd like those I leave behind to continue living their lives. I'm not going to care what they do with my Earthly remains after I die, so it's really up to my family.

healer 12-14-2005 01:19 AM

Funerals are for the living and people need to say goodbye, so the most important thing for me would be the funeral service. Not so they can blow smoke up my ass about what a great guy I was, just so the family can say their farewell.

I don't really care, cremation or burial. I just want to 'return to the earth' if that makes sense. So scatter my ashes somewhere or bury me somewhere. But if I'm to be buried, I want daisies planted on my grave. I wanna be the one pushin 'em up :D

little_tippler 12-14-2005 03:35 AM

I want to be cremated and I have no idea where my ashes should go...maybe in a pretty garden.

MSD 12-14-2005 07:29 AM

Donate all of my organs, give my sking to burn victims, if I didn't have kids then give my balls to some guy who had testicular cancer so I get a chance to pass on my DNA and he gets back what he lost, and have a talented metal worker incorporate my bones (at least the ribcage and skull, but preferably the whole thing) into a medieval suit of armor and give it to my brother, or if he's dead, whichever of my relatives seems least appalled by the idea.

I always used to wonder as a young teenager why they just didnt send all that "radioactive nuclear atomic toxic waste crap" in the sun to get rid of it...
