I Love Your Handle

How interesting each member's name / handle / zodiak is.

What do you call it, really? You know, the techno-geek term?
Your ID thingy, right?
I'm sure mine seems more boring than most. Yah, "zz0011," now there's one what's gonna be a barn burner fer shure. Mrs. O of Chicago has a cow what's got real in-security issues NOW, babee. Big time. Oh yeah.
Not.
But I think it would make fascinating reading how we all came to choose the handle we have.
So how about posting the story of yours?
And how about posting it here?
And how about trying to keep it like a Fruit of the Loom: brief?
Say maybe one text box without making the scroll bar appear? One precious paragraph dropped ever so graciously on us.
And how do I get unstuck from axing so many questions?
And I know what you're thinking: you hippo-crite. Purposefully spelled: see my pro-file. Or my aunti-file. Or my uncle-file. Or even my nail-file. What do I care what you do on your time?
But right. So Z's not posting HIS certainly sorry story. AND he's well past the point of making that scroll bar thingy pop up. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

So fair's fair. As soon as I can remember, I'll share. In the mean time: inspire me, dudes and dudettes.

I raise sheep and was trying to think of a User-name....hence Eweser.

Gitmo 11-28-2005 10:33 AM

Gitmo was what they called me in the Marine Corps. It’s short for Guantanamo Bay Cuba and Gittins my last name. I don’t remember how it started

zz0011 11-28-2005 10:43 AM

guccilvr - you're right, I couldn't access it... so I'm a little bit behind the times... hey, it's okay, i like butts

This is interesting, thanks to all for sharing.

Charlatan 11-28-2005 10:44 AM

And here I thought you were either a) playing into your proximity to Greek Town or b) gender confused...

Lucifer 11-28-2005 11:15 AM

I was Prince of Darkness on the old board, but after the server crashed and everything was wiped out, I tried to re-register with that handle, but the system wouldn't let me (I guess someone else beat me to it or something), so I did Lucifer instead. I think it's a cool name.

Willravel 11-28-2005 11:27 AM

Will = me, Ravel = Maurice Ravel, my favorite composer. Used this sn on AIM when I was in HS and it just stuck.

Craven Morehead 11-28-2005 11:46 AM

Really? Some people have stories behind their handle? No shit!!! :D

Stare At The Sun 11-28-2005 12:19 PM

I'm something you don't want to do.

Hmmm...as a pick up line, that could go either way.
They'll either take you at your word, or take it as a challenge. :D

hot damn! It's amazing at what we find out about each other on this board. I too had a classical education, never thought anybody would pick up on the Hellenistic aspect of the name (although I did get a nice note from Amonkie who is a Dune fan as well).

Soo.. what is the source of your handle Charlatan?

-- Willravel, thanks, you made me read your handle carefully. Up to now, I've been reading it Will Travel... By the way, i've logged the Bolero as one of my fav intrumentals in another thread.

skier 11-28-2005 01:22 PM

:D I signed up with this name because I was just going to look at the boobies and it didn't matter what handle I had. Then I stuck around and still have this unoriginal one.

JustJess 11-28-2005 01:31 PM

I have no story... I couldn't think of something fun, and I wanted to go with simplicity. Shockingly, my name is Jessica in real life.

I'm just me. Just Jess.

Pip 11-28-2005 01:54 PM

It's one of my old nicknames, and it has nothing to do with "Great Expectations" at all.
The only reason I have that Pip in my avatar is because Ioan is hot.

I'm pretty sure I've posted this elsewhere but since you asked... Back in the early 90s I started using the name Charlatan while I was browsing BBSs. It comes from two places.

The school paper at Carleton University was called The Charlatan... and my best friend would often shout out, for no apparent reason, "Baudelaire! Charlatan!" We were ususally drunk or high at the time so it was immensely funny.

Nothing too outrageous there...

Oh, I so agree.

Personally, I love this little owl here:
http://yacht.zamok.net/DV/Potter/hedwig.jpg

but didn't want people confusing me with this Hedwig:
http://athens.src.uchicago.edu/~lenka/images/hedwig.jpg

as I knew was likely to happen. Therefore, I became onesnowyowl. Or snowy, as most people refer to me. As I have some characteristics commonly attributed to owls (nocturnal, preys on small animals, intelligent, sharp claws) I find it to be a most appropriate name.

Sage 11-28-2005 03:13 PM

Because my Second Life name was Sage Beckenbauer (holy lord I'm such a geek)

This was around oh, a year ago, and I thought Sage was a nicely sexy without being overused sort of name.

Hence, I became Sage, because I liked the name. I never even thought of the "Sage= old wise person" until about three months later :)

zz0011 11-28-2005 03:21 PM

BOOBIES????????????

I'M SHOCKED!!!!!!

zz0011 11-28-2005 03:26 PM

This is still to being very much fun to me.

zz0011 -- When I first was coming online on another service [Which?] I tried several combinations of obvious [my first name, etc.] and less so [things I thought were cool] and wow did find out quick how late I was to the game. All the good ones were gone. In a moment of frustration, I simply wanted to find something no one else had, nor would be likely to choose. Now I use it for most things [although I use my real name on a few sites to help me manage what I'm getting from whom in my email].

Yah, y'all can yawn now. Twice. Boring.

MiSo 11-28-2005 03:27 PM

Miso because i'm a sushi chef.

wanted a nickname somehow related to my profession.

zz0011 11-28-2005 03:29 PM

thank you...

yabobo 11-28-2005 03:37 PM

I have been since the internet started. I am yabobo...........
A language that is very old. It means yes I know you. You are
not an enemy yet! Not a friend but someone I will listen to. :(
Treat me with respect and I will treat you as the same....

zz0011 11-28-2005 03:44 PM

Wow...

...that there language you speak packs quite a wallop in [1] word. I'd hate to try and translate if you were being interrogated some time, or you know trying to get a pizza order right, you know really important stuff... ;)

Keep it coming folks. Fascinating insights. Well, except for something stupid like "zz0011"...

Mantus 11-28-2005 03:51 PM

I just enjoy people misspelling my name as Mantis :p

Seeker 11-28-2005 04:05 PM

I am Seeker, because I seek...
I seek because I am empty...

Being empty is not always a heavy experience, I can do it in a light-hearted way ;)

Menoman 11-28-2005 04:18 PM

My first internet provider was AOL (I was young and dumb!)

Me and my friend were setting it up and we wanted to think of a name that the AOL lady(who hears tons and tons of these names every single day) would find funny.

If you can impress someone who'se job is to listen to usernames, that's pretty good eh?

So we came up with Menopphair, first glance it's like "Me Nop Fair" but when she asks me to spell it :P " Me No PP Hair" Needless to say it got her to chuckle so I won the day on that one.

After awhile it got boring so I changed it to Menolithoro when I started to play Everquest, "Menolithoro Drakenite" Then after awhile I got tired of people pronouncing that one wrong (to me it's pronounced "Me No Lee Thor O" but some people wanted to say it as "Meh No Lith Oro"

So I changed it to Menoman, I still use Menolithoro for gaming though.

People will pronounce Menoman wrong though, Me No Man! NOT Meh No man!

Carno 11-28-2005 04:25 PM

Carno is my username for everything else, but some bastard already took that handle on this forum. So I just dropped the "O."

Marvelous Marv 11-28-2005 05:52 PM

Was watching a Mets game at the time, and flashed on good 'ol Marvelous Marv Throneberry. He of the less-than-stellar fielding ability. One of my favorite incidents was the time a little girl at some dinner wanted an autograph, and tossed him a baseball to sign.

Which he dropped.

meembo 11-28-2005 07:59 PM

meembo is how a two year old says my name at preschool

tspikes51 11-28-2005 09:40 PM

Tspikes51= Takeo Spikes, #51. He played for the Bengals a while back and the name just stuck. That being said, my gaming handle is Number1Dad. I don't have any kids, but there's an inside story about that (aside from the one I got from battle.net talking about how it was "fun fuckin' fathers").

serlindsipity 11-28-2005 10:34 PM

someone once (and still does) call me his Muse. He is a song writer and I guess I am inspiration for him when he falls on rough times. I am an artist and always personally strive to inspire and encourage people to be their best as much as i can. I added part of my real life name into my favorite name of any muse and thus its stuck.

indebut 11-28-2005 11:17 PM

I was just trying to come up with something original...somehow ended up with indebut

zz0011 11-28-2005 11:32 PM

thus far: this has been real, and fun

thanks one and all for sharing

Mine's my universal internet handle, so I don't have to keep track of 50,000 different usernames. Comes from a cartoon I used to draw when I was 17.
