Commonly Confused Words test

From the same site that gave us the 'What kind of society do you prefer test' comes the 'Commonly Confused Words test.' I see a bunch of threads on making the rounds on TFP regarding grammar and diction, but this one quantifies it into a score.

Commonly Confused Words test.

I scored 'English Genius,' which means I'm now eligible to have people nitpick my grammar.

I also got 'English Genius'. But oddly, on my breakdown, I did my best against other people on the Advanced and Expert in comparison to the earlier levels

You scored higher than 32% on Beginner

Hmm... I only missed one. It was the paid/payed one. I'm always unsure about it, but I never looked it up until tonight. I've seen "payed" in too many places, and I always suspected it wasn't right. That was a fun way to stay sharp!

I think the 'higher than' breakdown is relative to your demographic data that you input on the last page.

And I was wondering if this thread might turn out to all be geniuses because the posting group is self-selecting.

I was worried I'd think too much and screw it up, but I pulled the 100% in all categories too. The rules of English are comforting to me. It's not a chore for me to follow them, I guess. I do think it's funny that more people in my demographic screw up the section marked "Intermediate" than the "Beginner" section.

English has been a weak area for me since I was educated in WV by people who had horrible grammar. I'm basically self-taught. I looked at the key and I'm not sure why my score was low because I only saw a few that I missed in the expert section only. Oh well, either it's too early or the program was messed up. Whatever, I know that I'm a good writer. I had to be since all my Master's assignment were written and I graduated with a 4.0. BTW, can you tell I don't take criticism well and get very defensive.

English Genius, here. I took it a while ago and got two or three wrong, and that's because I was putting all the possible answers, not all the best answers. As in the "speeding is *blank*" question, I answered both risky and risque, because both answers are grammatically correct. I suppose I should have known better than that.

I don't, however, believe the test is too easy. The title is "The Commonly Confused Words Test." Most of those words are confusing for the average person. Does it surprise you that in a community where literacy is a prerequisite for participation that we score well? I think it's a sign that the TFP rules, not that the test is too easy.

You have a good understanding of intermediate and advanced commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of the intermediate and advanced level questions correct. The puzzling part of your test result is the fact that you only answered 75% or less correct in the beginner section. Fascinating.

Not bad for a frenchman, who is always learning, especially considering that this convoluted language of English is the hardest to learn. Or so they say.

Its interesting reading the bits you got wrong; my problem seems to be my punctuation and things like that rather than confusing words. I learned something new today: how to use a colon correctly. Wish they still taught grammer, spelling and punctuation at school, best we ever got was in French Writing when the teacher had to go over basic English to make up for us not learning it in English!

It would be nice if there was a cheat sheet or something similar that contained commonly misused rules.

, which - refers to the whole group
, that - refers to a subgroup
eg: The windows were all open. The windows, that were open, were shut at 4pm.

didn't know that that was a subgroup till 2 weeks ago... I feel ashamed.

people take online grammar on a forum like this way to seriously! (waits to get banned for spelling a word incorrectly!!) Most times I am reading and typing a reply while doing 50 million other things at the same time, mistakes like the war in iraq are bound to happen. Plus when I was in grade 3 I remember a teacher calling home to tell my mother I had failed a spelling test and that I may have Dyslexia. My mother handled the situation by transferring me out of that teachers class instead of getting me tested (which i found out i am Dyslexic years later) I am grammatically challenged and love it.

You scored 100% Beginner, 92% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 86% Expert!

I used to think me were smart.

You scored higher than 66% on Beginner
You scored higher than 15% on Intermediate
You scored higher than 43% on Advanced
You scored higher than 69% on Expert

However, I am concerned that I scored 100% on Beginner, but higher than 66% of people in my gender, age range, etc. Who are the 44% overachievers that scored more than 100%?! I'll kick yo' heiney.
