The people who deliberately use those ruined words to annoy others, you guys are mean.

The following words annoy the hell out of me when used in this sequence and in variations similar in nature, "like, you knowww, whatever."

work lingo is great because no one dares laugh at the people using it. there was a column in the Onion quite a while ago entirely written in this format.
here's the story i recalled: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/33222
here's a similar story for the heck of it: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/28292

Discrimination. Once, we all wished to develop discrimination. I still have a dictionary that claims the word means : “1. The ability to notice quality: the ability to appreciate good quality or taste. 2. Awareness of subtle differentiation: the ability to notice subtle differences.”
Now it pretty much means unfair treatment because of prejudice.

"basically"
"to be honest"
"at the end of the day"
"when all's said and done"
"taking that on board"

Well, when they're being over-used by the sort of person who feels the need to cram at least two or three of them into every sentence (generally work-related), regardless of whether they add anything or not. Used properly, I don't mind them, but it seems they're just thrown into sentences to make them sound better and it's not just me who has noticed it, I've seen a few people complaining about them.

I had a philosophy teacher who over-used the word 'clearly' while making up and summarizing wide swathes of bullshit.

Everytime I hear that word I still see red.

"I had a philosophy teacher who over-used the word 'clearly' while making up and summarizing wide swathes of bullshit."

May I assume that, being a philosophy teacher, this was pretty much all the time?

Just got a new one.

Whenever one of my friends is in a group with girls, he'll find an excuse to say "new direction" for example, "Let's take this conversation in a new direction." or "I'd like to move that thought into a new direction."

All I ever hear is "nude erection" and I'm pretty sure he does it on purpose. It's driving me batty.

"golden"

golden things are classic, or really good... until someone starts to copy everything you say, and everything becomes golden...

These words aren't really words that I liked beforehand, but they're definitely words that have been used in my field so often that they are just annoying now. I'll cover all of them in one sentence:

"In theory, the most value-added viable enterprise solution would be to outsource."

AHHHH!!!!!!! I really hate my field sometimes (CIS). You could have said, "The best choice is to get someone else to do it." Nope. Gotta have the value-added viable enterprise solutions with the outsourcing, else it doesn't sound technical enough.

That was the one I was going to point out. Very few people know how to use this word. I remember watching a documentary one time on the making of some film and the director or producer was being interviewed and he must have used "literally" about 20 different times in a five minute interview. Not once did he use the word right. But I don't want to complain too much, I am sure I use words wrong all the time. Until recently I used the word iregardless instead of regardless, so I am just as guilty.

I can't use 'literally' much since MadTV has that 'literally' couple...it's funny and at the same time literally annoying
'thinking outside the box' just wrong from t-x
'basically' which I do tend to use, it's a habit I'm trying to break
'same difference' another habit I broke. Either it's the same or it's different

Sorry, Happened to be listening to Valley Girl by Zappa when I read that...

I don't know that there are any words that annoy me at this point, but I do have a tendency to pick up certain phrases and overuse them for a time... Trying to break that habit. My most recent one is "fair enough". As in whenever I don't really agree, but dont really care to disagree with someones statement it gets the "fair enough..."

optik_nerve 11-08-2005 06:57 PM

Ooh, I thought of another. I hate when people say "I ain't gonna lie". As in "Blah blah blah is cool, I ain't gonna lie," or "Blah blah blah sucks, I ain't gonna lie."

Don't fucking lie, just tell the truth in the first place.

KellyC 11-09-2005 06:42 PM

P.....C.....

I see this term being used way too many times in TFP, and they killed it!!

getwonk'd 11-09-2005 09:01 PM

Dude-That is one word I can't stand. My kids say it all the time. I did find a way to curb the usage around me though, I told them if I hear it again, they will have to write a one page report on the real meaning of the word. I haven't heard it since!

The other thing that really bugs me is when I say something and I get "Are you serious?" or "hang on" as a response. I wouldn't have said it if I weren't serious and hang on to what?
