Madonna offends God, news at six

Madonna's first religion was Catholicism -which she promptly offended some religious types. Now she "converts" to a new faith and proceeds to piss them off.

Jewish Mystics to Madonna: Lay off our sage!
A song on Madonna's upcoming album dedicated to a Kabbalist rabbi is drawing criticism from some rabbis.

Madonna and Friend in Tel Aviv at a Kabbalah "Shiyur"

A song on Madonna's upcoming album dedicated to a Kabbalist rabbi is drawing criticism from some rabbis, the Israeli Maariv daily reported Sunday.

The album, "Confessions on a Dance Floor," is to be released on Nov. 15 and features a track entitled "Isaac" about Yitzhak Luria, a 16th century Jewish mystic and Kabbalah scholar.

Rabbis who oversee Luria's tomb and a seminary in the northern town of Safed are unimpressed with Madonna's musical tribute and see the inclusion of the song about Luria on the album as an attempt by the pop star to profit from his name.

Madonna made a much publicized visit to Israel in 2004, when she visited many sites important to Kabbalah, but she did not travel north to Luria's grave.

The singer and actress was raised a Roman Catholic but has become a follower of Kabbalah in recent years. Madonna has adopted the Hebrew name Esther, wears a red string around her wrist to ward off the "evil eye" and reportedly refuses to perform on the Jewish Sabbath. She is one of a group of non-Jewish celebrities who have taken an interest in Kabbalah in recent years.

The movement has sparked skepticism and criticism among many of the rabbis who specialize in studying and teaching Kabbalah. Jewish tradition holds that Kabbalah is so powerful and complicated that students may not begin to approach it until after age 40. Among the elements of Kabbalah are mystical meanings drawn from holy books by recombination of letters and other signs.

Rabbi Rafael Cohen, head of a seminary named after Luria, suggested Madonna's actions could lead to divine retribution.

"Jewish law forbids the use of the name of the holy rabbi for profit. Her act is just simply unacceptable and I can only sympathize for her because of the punishment that she is going to receive from the heavens," Cohen told Maariv.

Another rabbi called for Madonna to be thrown out of the community.

"Such a woman brings great sin on kabbalah," Rabbi Israel Deri told Maariv. "I hope that we will have the strength to prevent her from bringing sin upon the holiness of the Rabbi (Yitzhak Luria)."

Deri serves as deputy chair of the Religious Sites Authority, which oversees Luria's burial site in Safed. Neither Deri nor Cohen were available for comment on Sunday.
I'm kinda looking forward to the divine retribution... Maybe God will inspire her followers that her music really does suck.

madonna who? do people really listen to her music for a message? can't believe people actually care about what she or really any other celb has to say. If she wants to put her money were her mouth is thats fine, but who cares what she thinks. My guess would be that even if she never said anything religious that the jewish rabbi or whatever would have been pissed that it was not mentioned. anything to get into the news and sell records/promote religion. Saw her in concert when i was younger during the blond something or other tour. She was hot.

LOL, there is a website called jewsweek.com? I remember reading a thread where using the name jew was an insult? not that it is to me. gonna go surf over to irishweekly.com.

What happens when people get famous? Are they taken to some undergournd lair and indoctrinated in the cult of the crazy?

I think most people don't give a rat's ass what Madonna says, or Streisand or any of these people. But THEY think we hang on every word.

The thread was From Bitch Dog to Jew Couple.... To save you the reading time: "Jew" as a noun is OK, but "Jew" as an adjective is insulting; "Jewish" would be the correct adjective.

She does not need this song to make her famous. All she did was write a song about a person or subject. She's not the one raising the fuss.

I find it ridiculous that these "religious" folk deem others not worthy of their religion. I see the same irony here as I do in catholocism.

"Celebrities" have to maintain a certain visability. It's important for their careers. I don't think Madonna is in that category, though. I think flat5 nailed it; it's the rabbies involved who are being attention mongers.

I'm a bit hesitant to call a rabbi an attention whore. We'll see where this goes, if it ever shows up in the news again, which I rather doubt.

Maybe if she was serious about the religeon she would be acceptable. But she is not following the beliefs at all, just making a mockery of them.

IMO, the people in every religion on this planet make mockeries of themselves and their religion when they behave like they "own the rights" to worship. As if we must have their approval in order to worship correctly. God gave you the right and the ability to worship any way you like. So go ahead and do that and let Madonna take care of her own soul as she sees fit.

As to the exclusivity of the jewish religion, addressed above, I wish that more religions were more selective on who got to join- If you disagree, watch a televangelist some time ( Robert Tilton is a good example, as well as giving me an amusing idea of what the anti-christ should look/ act like)

Interesting thought and I agree for the most part. I do not care how she worships, preys, does what she wants. But making a total mockery of someone’s belief publicly, making songs about an amazing Rebbi, a gadol hador (the greatest rabbi of his generation, consider it to a pope, but not exactly) in a song, where there are religious issues to even listen to a woman sing. Etc... That is where I say it is wrong. If she wants to do what she wants at home, go for it, it is for G-d to judge not me. But to make a public mockery, and bring about the fakeness to an aspect of the religion publicly like she has, is wrong.

Well then what are they doing listening to Madonna in the first place? She's not exactly a gospel singer. I compare this to Ford Motor Company being offended when the manufacturer of Twinkies publicly praises the quality of Ford's engines.

I actually highly doubt that they have ever heard her sing, ever. It is them getting more upset at someone making a mockery of G-d and the belief. Imagine someone making a mockery of the a 'Saint' if you would.

Does anyone else enjoy the irony of the title? "Madonna offends God?" What, are His Holiness and the Virgin Mary in a tiff?
And personally, if I were a rabbi, I would be asking myself why God made Madonna so successful if she is a blasphemer. After all, it must have been a miracle to blind people enough that they would buy her drivel.

I think Madonna was unwise to include that song. Mixing religion with entertainment is bound to cause some offence when the artist is controversial.

Having seen Madonna on the MTV award ceremony the other week where to prove Elton John wrong she actually sang live I can honestly say that she has now not only offended God, but also managed to offend me.

You can't help but be offended when someone shits in your ears.

It's nice that she tried to answer her critics and managed to prove to the whole world that she's one of the world's most popular singers, that can't actually sing very well.

You have to realize being succesful singer does not neccesarily have to do with having the best voice. It is about presentation and knowing how to sell yourself. While I am not a madonna fan, no one can say she does not know how to sell herself!
