When was the last time you did something for the first time?

There's this commercial here in Manila that's been playing where they show some guys from Africa going outside to play in the snow.

So it made me think when the last time it was that I did something for the first time.

This past tuesday, we went to a Zoo here in a village of Manila and pet a tiger cub. I've petted many other animals, orangutans, lions, goats, sheep in petting zoos but never a tiger.

When was the last time you did something for the first time?

sadistikdreams 09-29-2005 09:47 PM

Oddly enough, it was today.

I er uh... Fornicated with a customer.

Yeah, as some of you might know, I work at STARRRBUXXX. I've been trying not to fornicate with our clientile, just to stay professional, but today, I broke down. It was the first time doing something for the first time in a long time.

snowy 09-29-2005 09:58 PM

I tried anal sex for the first time last week.

That's my first.

taog 09-29-2005 10:33 PM

I was thinking that I got in a stupid fight for the first time with my girlfriend today.

i am going to post about it, but this post caught my eye

However, those are my recent first times

I had anal sex, with a woman, for the first time last week.. friday to be exact

and, i got in a fight with the person i had anal sex with last friday (probably because i haven't had sex since then)

I went to a strip club for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It was a long time coming (I'm 33). It was a hell of a lot of fun.

Suave 09-29-2005 11:52 PM

I ate fries for breakfast for the first time today. If it has to be a larger even than that, then it's been probably two weeks since I've done something for the first time.

Redlemon 09-30-2005 03:39 AM

I must be in a wicked rut. I'm 36, and I can't think of anything over the last year. Think think think.....

Charlatan 09-30-2005 04:27 AM

I am executive producing my first film... don't know if it will get made but it's my first time going through this on my own.

/joins RedLemon in that rut...

/me thinks for a moment

/me goes off to kill someone for the first time, just to watch them die

MojoRisin 09-30-2005 04:41 AM

This is the first time I posted in this thread!

Charlatan 09-30-2005 05:26 AM

Mal... you moved into your new apartment for the first time (not the first move but it is for this new pad...) and that counts.

Redlemon... there has to be some firsts accociated with your little monkey in the past year (hell the last week most likely). I know my daugfter is always doing new things for me (notably last night she farted in my face... charming  ).

guthmund 09-30-2005 05:52 AM

I haven't done anything new in a long, long time.

/loves his little rut

/sends lawyers, guns and money, to Mal; the shit has hit the fan

Spanxxx 09-30-2005 06:11 AM

I lost a disc golf yesterday for the first time =(. It was my Raven too. I quite liked that disc. Poor little fellar, out there all alone in the trees and bushes where the snakes are. Hopefully he can fend for himself. Ravens are pretty mean after all.

splck 09-30-2005 06:20 AM

I spat on the head of a calf moose as it walked under the tree stand I was in while hunting. I don't know why I did it, but I did....it was definitely a first for me.

I swept my first chimney last week. Time to fire up the old wood stove.

Giant Hamburger 09-30-2005 07:02 AM

I went to my first parent-teacher conference.
Seamlessly, I fit into human society aping the ways of their breeders.
The teachers suspected nothing.

Martian 09-30-2005 07:44 AM

I performed on the guitar in front of an auidence for the first time two weeks ago. I'm more prone to just picking it up and noodling around on my own, so the only person who's heard me play besides myself up to now is my girlfriend and former roomates.

I even sang, too. I didn't get heckled, but I was among friends, so we'll hold off on the 'guitar hero' jacket just for now.

I did my first and probably only ever modelling job about a week before that. We needed promo material for the business so I bit the bullet and did some poses with my girlfriend. Actually the picture of me in Tilted Portraits is one of the ones that didn't turn out as well, with the girl edited out. I decided you lot could have one of the rejects, the nice ones are strictly for our pamphlets.

I try to do something I've never done before at least once a week. Preferably daily, but that's not always practical.

Well the first thing that comes to mind is something that happened last month. ((I almost got out a speeding ticket.)) Actually it would have been 3 tickets. I guess the cop was in a good mood. He let me go. I have had 4 or 5 tickets in my life ... so this was truly lucky!

Jack Ruby 09-30-2005 08:49 AM

Just this morning I bought morning-after pills for the first time. For a friend.

StanT 09-30-2005 09:04 AM

I'm sure it's TMI, but I had my very first prostate exam the other day. Highlight of my week.

Gilda 10-01-2005 04:21 AM

I suppose it depends upon how you define "something new". I ride roller coasters and go to amusement parks quite frequently. I rode the new coaster at Knott's Berry Farm for the first time this summer. Would that be something new, it being a new coaster, or just a new form of something I've done a couple thousand times before? If I get a new outfit, is that something new?

I think not, as those are activities that I generally do quite frequently. These were just new iterations of the same activity.

So honestly, I can't really think of anything new for quite some time, probably more than a year. That, though, I consider a good thing. Avoiding new things is a good way to avoid risk, which is generally more positive than negative for me. I can get novelty and variety through varying those things I already know that I enjoy doing.

I tested for a belt in Tae-Kwon-Do. I took a month of classes in college, back in 1976, so when I stepped onto the floor to start taking lessons at age 46, I HAD been in such a class before. But I never tested (and passed) for a belt.

Starting next week I begin my first "real" job. I've been self employed in the Arts on a "show to show" basis for the past 10 years. However, I have a son now and I just couldn't pass up this job opportunity. It's a software company whose main application is a lighing design tool used extensively for theatre and concerts. I like to think I'll still be supporting the arts, just in a different way.

Best of all, they're cool with me working on shows on the side. This way, I can stay sane and not lose touch with that side of my brain. (the most important one imho)

Every sign points to this being the right move, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit to being nervous about something slipping away.

Rodney 10-01-2005 06:31 AM

They'll all seem somewhat trivial, but they're not. And they're not all positive:

A couple of months ago I started doing deadlifts and squats in my weight routine for the first time ever. I'd avoided them because I'd been told they'd exascerabate my lower back problems. Instead, they essentially cured them.

I interviewed for a job and for the first time in 20 years, my asking salary was _less_ than my salary on my previous job in the same profession. Sign of the times....

A few months ago I started a new collection: community cookbooks. You know, the cheap spiral-bound things published by churches, PTAs, and so on in which members contribute their favorite recipes. They're cheap and they're everywhere. They fascinate me; I think in large part because of the endless and hideous things people do with lime jello and cream of mushroom soup. Which they're _proud_ of, and want to share. Occasionally you find one that's actually valuable, like a cookbook from a Catholic church in which all the old Italian women share their pasta dishes, and there are recipes you've never even heard of before.l

A couple of years ago I changed careers for the first time in my adult life. But it didn't work out all that well -- didn't like it as much as I might, permanent employment was hard to find, wages were low. And my wife is losing her job, so I guess I'm back in my old profession. Guess you might consider this my first professional failure, as well, as of this week.

I do a lot of community video, but it's largely shooting people in rooms. This summer I did my first location shoot -- of a community parade and festival -- and it was a hell of a lot of fun. I'm considering taking the camera to a UFO convention next month. Should be interesting!

A month ago I held a gold coin in my hand for the first time, a one-ounce gold eagle bullion coin. Gold is dense; lay a gold coin in the palm of your hand, and you can really feel the weight. I can understand why some people go nutty over the stuff.

A couple of weeks ago, I started cooking extra-large batches of food for dinner and freezing half of it for later. Been intending to do this all my life and never got around to it before now. It really works out well. There's always something around for dinner.

veruca 10-01-2005 01:01 PM

This was actually my new years resolution this year, " to try new things", cause I was a bit rutty.

there have been a ton of things...but the latest, I smoked a cigarette, I am 26 and had never in my life even tried. It was not something I think I would do on a regular basis, but it sure is fun when you are drunk.

cellophanedeity 10-01-2005 01:41 PM

Last Sunday I took my first yoga class.

On Wednesday I skipped a class for the first time this year.

Slavakion 10-01-2005 02:09 PM

Three weeks ago I took a martial arts class

A few days ago I joined a political movement on campus (to change campus policies)

markasm 10-01-2005 03:04 PM

I met someone and had sex with her the same night. I'm 38, and I'd never done that before. I think I might be a late bloomer.

Change is always a bit nerve-wracking. You'll manage, though. Good job on thinking of your son first.

Thorny 10-01-2005 03:18 PM

I rolled my kayak. It's a disturbing feeling to take a perfectly good boat and willingly capsize it, but it's a neat feeling to then take a capsized boat and *flick* pop right back out of the water.

(I'm used to big power boats and sailboats, and water that will kill you for such foolishness)

markasm 10-01-2005 03:18 PM

And joining an online community... in a very Chevy Chase-like way... I guess that would probably count too.

Wow, that's hella bizarre, and way against Starbucks standards!

PS: The last time I did something for the first time was when I moved to San Jose!

For one, I was speeding. 40 in a 25 - which I was unaware of. Also the tinting on the windows is apparently too dark for CA. Too make it worse, I lost my license. Dropped it somewhere. It's like a 1000.00 dollor fine for that alone. He was actually supposed to arrest me for not having identity and for the laws I had broken, but he believed me when I told him I was truely clueless. Thank goodness!! I've had about 5 tickets in my life. One of those was for not having my license at the time and the rest were for speeding. I didn't need another one!! I wasn't one bit flirty!! :D

I went on my first roller coaster, 2 weeks ago.
