The McMarketing campaign in Japan replaces the traditional baggy-pants male clown with a sexy, bikini-clad woman.

"In the Japanese TV commercial," notes Britain's Guardian newspaper, "the foxy female version, with shoulder-length straight auburn hair in place of Ronald's frizzy mop, smolders at the camera in a flowing yellow dress, and later a red and white striped bikini with thigh-length leggings and red high heels."

"The customers are calling her the female Ronald but that was not our intention," said campaign creator, Hidekazu Sato, known by his nickname Kazoo, through a translator. "We devised the costume and took the red and white stripes and the yellow, which were recognized and converted them into a stylish dress. ...

"We were assuming that even if we didn't include the McDonald's logo and even if the model was a beautiful Caucasian just those colors of the mnemonic design would wake up people's association with McDonald's. The important point is we didn't change Ronald himself – we played around with his costume."

The London Times reports the Japanese campaign is bringing customers back to the Golden Arches, as well as winning praise from design and fashion experts, but the gender change is too radical for a global audience, so the traditional clown is not being retired.

Illinois-based McDonald's, founded in 1955 by Ray Kroc, reportedly has had a grilling relationship with Japan since its debut in 1971.

According to the Times, when faced with accusations that hamburgers were inimical to the country's diet, Den Fujita, the first McDonald's Japan president, declared: "The reason Japanese people are so short and have yellow skins is because they have eaten nothing but fish and rice for 2,000 years. If we eat McDonald’s hamburgers and potatoes for a thousand years we will become taller, our skin become white and our hair blond."

I hope that's just a poor translation, because that's really fucked up. Man, we really fucked with Japan's collective psyche in the 50s.

As i understand it, the Japanese view the blonde haired white skinned person as the epitome of beauty. Of course all Japanese may not think that way, but I'm pretty sure that's the general consensus.

I can't wait to see what will happen when(if) the commercials come to the US. $10 says "parents groups" are gonna go ape-shit.

I can't even begin to say how screwed up this is. I can't believe that he would actually believe this is true. What about the fact that the percentage of the population of obese Japanese is smaller than that of Americans? Only thing that I can really see happening by Japanese eating more McD's is getting them all fattened up. Real good.

Actually i think atleast part of his arguement is true, atleast the height part. I've heard of a couple studies that have show that since their diet has expanded they have grown in height more than usual. Growth hormones in some foods may play some of the role, but simply eating more meat over/with fish and rice has caused an increase in vertical growth.

This has been another.... useless fact.

I really doubt anyone is willing to lose 10$ that quickly with the prices of everything around us going up.

Back to the article though, I really dont see for such a change. Kids wont eat more burgers because a cute girl is on TV. They are swaying the commercials from kids to teen/adults.

They won't be using this campaign here. No way, no how.

Well we had some issues about the collective psyche they had in the 40's :rolleyes:

That being said, white skin has always been 'beautiful' in Japan, and is why the geisha makeup is so white. Height has also been an issue with them, though the blonde hair thing I had not heard about.

Anyways I’m feeling a bit yellow, think I’ll go eat a Big Mac.
