I used to *want* to be an actress... I still love acting and will do it when I can, but I hate the !@$!@#@! business of it. Soooo....

I'm the Immigration Coordinator for a swanky ortho hospital on the east coast. We have a big research division, and we want the best... and the best aren't always American. So they need visas. Voila! Job!

At night, I'm taking prereqs so I can go to a Master's Physician Assistant program. The first BA was Theater and Spanish... so clearly I have a few to take. I figured if I can't be rich, I may as well be useful. I want to work in an ER.

On the prison CO's... my mom used to teach at several min and med security prisions. Ah, grown men who don't know the alphabet. *sigh*

Schwan 09-27-2005 10:20 AM

I've got a BA in sociology and study for an MA in national security. I'm a manager for a mostly online ad agency. I coordinate projects, supervise them being put together, and listen to crap from my bosses and customers every time someone fails to communicate. Sigh. It's a great job, but sometimes very taxing.

snowy 09-27-2005 10:27 AM

Right now, unemployed. Yuck.

ShaniFaye 09-27-2005 11:09 AM

Im a technical designer.....I design partitions (the seperators inside a box) for a packaging company. Im the only female in my division...very cool perk lol another cool perk is that we get to keep the samples companies send us to design for.

did I mention I design for just about every major (and some not so major) alcohol company in the US? Liquor companies, beer companies, wineries....you name them, I probably work with them.

ElvenDestiny 09-27-2005 11:14 AM

Assistant Network Administrator, business name must be censored sorry :(

tecoyah 09-27-2005 11:31 AM

Retail Manager....truly, the cusp of all that is worthwhile.

Daknjak 09-27-2005 11:55 AM

I am a Loan Officer for a local Mortgage Company. If you live in Wisconsin or Michigan I would love to help you with that refinance, construction or purchase. Can you tell that I am a salesman? I love the people I work with, and I love helping people out, which I get to do everyday. There is nothing like pulling someone out of debt, and making them feel whole again.

I also get my own business cards, (I consider this a great thing seeing as I used to work in nothing but factory jobs before this...third shift) and I get to be on the TFP anytime I want to at work. Life is good. :D

mr sticky 09-27-2005 12:42 PM

I'm a respiratory therapist. Or...as our state licensure says- a Respiratory Care Practioner. It's pretty cool. I work weekend nights at a small hospital and spend the majority of my time playing video games and reading. Of course, flirting with cute nurses is a plus.

Mr Honest 09-27-2005 12:47 PM

IT Administrator, I can sack people! So I never have I thank you.
I fix broken things, point out what's not broken and thrill people with my skillz :D

joemc91 09-27-2005 12:54 PM

I fly little jets for USAir, United, and American all around the midwest and northeast. Before that I taught flying and was a network administrator for a while. This is way more fun and the perks (free travel) are awesome. Pay sucks though, but it's worth it.

meembo 09-27-2005 01:27 PM

Not a damn thing today, but the money's running out

onodrim 09-27-2005 01:50 PM

Well, I've been a receptionist in a doctor's office, worked at a bakery, worked as an after care supervisor, worked at a music camp as music director and counselor, worked at a restaurant waiting tables, and worked as a teller at a bank, I got paid to be in a show once but most of my stage work has been "volunteer." And been a student through all of that. :p

Currently I'm unemployed and looking, unless you count the fact that the bank will take me back over Chirstmas Break if I'm in town then. :p

Hopefully I'll have one of those "real" jobs in a year once school is over. But for me that would be playing the lead role in a major theatre, so we'll see. :hmm:

tspikes51 09-27-2005 01:53 PM

Sophomore in college majoring in Telecommunications

Cashier at Kroger (or Ralph's for all you California people)

Sultana 09-27-2005 03:04 PM

By day I'm a technical editor/database manager/technical document producer/systems integration analyst. Heh, writing all that out makes me want a raise!
So I edit technical documentation for one of the largest defense contractors in the world for one of the oldest still-working aircraft in the US fleet (U-2, the Dragonlady). I help get the books out to the field, I make sure the database is doing all that it should (which is a lot), and make different software programs work together properly to make it all happen. It's not as creative as working for magazines and whatnot (which I've done in the past), but it's a great steady job for a great company, and I like the key people I work with. We're a little overworked and things rarely come together like they should, but we make it happen.

By night (and on weekends) I'm a professional belly dancer. I've been studying Middle Eastern dance for over 10 years, and in a few days will be leaving on a trip to Egypt, where among other more touristy things I'll be studying with some of the best master teachers of this art form in the world!

*hyperventilates with excitement, passes out*

dogzilla 09-27-2005 03:29 PM

Software engineer for a large computer company. My manager also told me I'm the team lead responsible for a team of four other guys. The last year has been a mad scramble managing to work on three different projects all somewhat related to high performance computing (formerly known as supercomputers) . Over the past year I have been involved in software design, testing the software, fixing bugs, customer support, training the other guys about new software, working with another team in our research division to move a piece of software from research to development, keep my manager aware of what in the world is going on, working with tech writers, and co-ordinating all kinds of nonsense with the project management teams. Oh, once in a while I actually get to write some software too.

That sucks, I'm colour blind too and I hate the job limitations. I wanted to be a cop when I was a kid.

But anyways, I'm a junior in college, taking a co-op mechanical engineering(CAD) course.

I also have a dream of being a professional Musician, but everyone needs a day job.

Stiltzkin 09-27-2005 05:12 PM

It's funny how everyone tries to make their job sound really, really important. Maybe it is, I don't know. I just find it funny though :)

Forcefully unemployed at the moment (it sounds like a bad thing but it's really not)

Eweser 09-27-2005 05:53 PM

My "official" title is System Analyst. Basically, I write software programs to help my colleagues do their jobs easier and better. I like it. Can't think of anything else I'd rather do except for maybe play softball every day.

moot1337 09-27-2005 06:59 PM

I'm a land surveyor tech/net admin at a small surveying company in Colorado. The tech part at the end pretty much means that I can survey stuff, I just don't have the licensure to make it legal, so my bosses do that :D

I started at the firm in April, and learned throughout the summer... now I'm the residing master of our GPS equipment, and I've learned a good deal of how the surveying system works and how to legally describe land...

It's been a great college job, though the aforementioned bosses need to work out a schedule for me already, as I've been "on break" since I started my freshman year at CSM (and no, I don't have any idea wtf I wanna do yet. Just not petroleum engineering, pleaaaaseee).

It sucks. I hate the job, but it pays well and has good benefits and a good retirement, so I'll stay. I have 10 years in with 17 more to walk off to retire at the age of 50.

gilbert- 09-28-2005 04:01 AM

Basically I work in a retail section at a supermarket - though this job is only temporary, as I am heading to university next year to do a course in medical imaging, it's great as in the mean time I am allowed a lot of free days to surf and socialise.

I don't think it's people trying make their jobs sound so important. Maybe just a little pride in what they do is coming through in their descriptions. I can't speak for everyone who has posted here, but I can speak for myself. The pay isn't great for my job, and I'll never get the recognition I believe is deserved in my field, but I enjoy my job. Unlike other jobs I have had in the past, I feel like I am contributing something, and doing something that a lot of people either are not able, or not willing to do.

Hearing what people do for a living adds a little insight as to who we all are, and I thought it was a great idea for a thread. :)

Police Officer here :)

frogza 09-28-2005 06:28 AM

I'm a full time marketing director and part time artist/illustrator. Hopefully my part time job will soon become my full time job.

ruggerp11 09-28-2005 08:33 AM

My title is Tech Support Assistant. My company is based out of Vancouver, but I am pretty much the main person that is On-site here in Minneapolis. I do desktop support (leaving most of the server side alone). I have good customer service skills, which helps me when telling people things they dont' want to hear, lol.

noodle 09-28-2005 03:03 PM

I am officially a Pediatric Social Service Generalist I. I used to be a Social Service Specialist II. Not quite sure what happened to that job description, they just wanted to bump me down a notch. Basically, I'm a social worker with families who have a child living with a life-threatening illness via pediatric palliative and hospice care. I love what I do. I can't stand the "superiors" I do it for.

I would agree that it is probably just pride in there jobs. But on the other hand, sometimes....for example in a thread about credit cards and there use, i bet that there were 50 posts, and 45 out of those 50 people had no credit card debit or paid it off immediately. Made me wonder how credit card companies stay in business with so many people paying the off.
:hmm:

not suggesting that anyone was lying or meaning to imply.

Grasshopper Green 09-28-2005 05:27 PM

Technically, I'm a "Nutrition Clerk", but it's just a glorified term for shelf stocker - I work for a Kroger company. I hate it, but the health care benefits are good, which is the main reason I stay there. I'm going back to school in January if things work out (woot!) so I can leave the retail biz behind.

MontanaXVI 09-28-2005 06:44 PM

I work for Kroger as well, I started out as a bagger working during school, worked my way up to cashier then onto the grocery crew stocking shelves etc. Did that for a couple years after high school then made my way onto the night stock crew as an Asst. Head Grocery clerk (backup for you Kroger people who know the lingo). Did that for a few years but got sick of working nights and the fact that just about everyone who worked on the stock crew was a castoff from society and just got on my last nerve, so I stepped down and started running the dock which I still do now. I basically yell and bitch at everyone who comes back and leaves a pallet in the middle of the floor or fills the cardboard baler up but does not think they should have to empty it, but my job duties include checking in all the beer, wine, bread, chips, pop (or soda depending on where you live). Been there 12 years total.

Looking at getting a new job currently though with a friend of mine who I actually met at Kroger we both started a few weeks apart. He is trying to get me a job at the local newspaper with him running the printing presses, it too, like Kroger, is a union job, but the pay scale is soooooooo much more, benefits are similar, really good perks too and I know everyone who works there since I have been playing softball with them the last 5 years or so.

SaltPork 09-28-2005 06:59 PM

Product Manager for a software company. All the responsibility and none of the authority....good times. Seriously, I really like the people I work with and the company itself is pretty good. Just wish there was more time in the day to do the things that need doing.

tangledweb 09-28-2005 07:22 PM

I own a Comic, Game, and Anime store which really sounds like more fun than it is.

My official pre-funnybook career was Sys-admin/PC Data systems/Tech Support for a small Software company. I loved the job, but wanted to see my kids grow up in person instead of in photos.

oberon 09-28-2005 07:45 PM

I'm a professional hitman.

Really.

Aw, sorry to burst your bubble. I'm a senior software engineer.

Who knows...maybe you're right. But, I operate on the premise that folks are telling the truth, unless proven otherwise. Now, at work I use the exact opposite approach.... When I am dealing with convicts I can tell when they're lying, and that's when their mouths are open.

I don't think this is that deep of a thread though.... so I am not really concerned if anybody inflates their own description of what they do. IMO it's just a light hearted thread meant to give people a chance to blow their own horns a little I guess, not a thread where we have to wonder if people are telling the truth or not. It really doesn't matter what we do, but it's still interesting to hear.

The reason I ask is I just started in transportation in June with TDCJ, and compared to working in a regular unit, it's like night and day. I actually like going to work now, and that's a huge improvement over my mental state prior to transfering to trans.

Each jail has their own transport teams. We have two where I work; a bus for the big trips, and a van for things like outside hospital trips.

I have been holding back my really, really important job so I wouldn't cause anyone else to be beyond envious. Ya never know what will drive some people to violence or mad cow behavior.

My hubby and I own a service franchise that is dedicated to sucking rug. :D
