What kind of jobs do you folks have?
Im just curious, never asked this on a forum before, just thought it might spur some interesting conversation.

I'm the Team Manager of Dispute Resolution for AT&T Emerging Services. We handle billing disputes for all AT&T Broadband business services.
The pay isn't that great, nor are the benefits, but I work with some really great people. |
I sell steel. :D
Huge steel coils like these: http://www.dapc.ca/graphics/shop4.jpg I sell to people who make office furniture, appliances, electronics, etc. Most of my contacts and customers are yearly contract buyers, so it's more about building relationships and servicing their needs than anything else. It's not a bad job to have, and some of my perks (basically unlimited budget to entertain clients, lots of free trips, free tickets to sporting events, etc.) are very, very cool. |
Thats pretty cool, my perks are listening to people kill themselves...lol
|
Corrections Officer in a maximum security prison.
|
I work for Dell selling home and home office systems at the moment. Its not a bad job as they go, more advising people on what they need for what they want to do than actually selling. The people that call me already know they want a computer they just need a push in the right direction.
|
In the summer I work at a YMCA Camp in the kitchen. During the year I work as a computer lab operator that helps people learn why their sound won't work (muted).

I work for a cabinet company specializing in custom commercial cabinets (schools, jails, hospitals, etc.). the majority of our work is in the bay area of northern california. My title is Production Engineer, I figure out material and hardware requirements for a each project, and resolve any design conflicts. I then generate the necessary paperwork and cut lists for the shop to manufacture the cabinets, and insure that the installers understand what goes where.

Cool idea for a thread! I have two jobs and one career.
First job is working part-time (3 or 4 days a week) at the Royal Conservatory of Music bookstore. I sell scores and sheet music to the students and faculty there. It's open to the public so we get a lot of music afficionadi and wannabe American Idol contestants buying opera or pop-music song sheets. It's been good to me and has supported my living costs while at the same time taught me much important music trivia (important trivia?). By night I am a jazz musician and even this has two sides to it. There's the side that will one day become all of what I am: composer, performer who plays what I want and hopefully can develop an interesting and vital body of work. I call this side the "artist." The other side is the guy that's slowly learning hundreds of the old standards, who plays in a quartet here, a trio there. This side of the musician (the "jobber") is how I make the rest of my living and over the last two years, this has grown to cover about %30 of my living costs. Hardly enough yet, but it's not like there's a shortage of professional piano players. Right now I'm on leave from the bookstore and the "jobber" is dominating as I am doing a well-paying hotel gig in Hong Kong. In November I go back and the "artist" is going to start making his mark... |
Part time coach. I coach students in a wide age group. Anywhere from 6-40+

I'm in private practice as a Chinese herbalist and auriculotherapist. I also work part-time in a tearoom/herbal apothecary.

Correctional Officer - I've worked in State Jails, Treatment Facilities, and Medium & Maximum Security units. While still a CO, I am now a Transfer Officer hauling convicts between state prison units, and inmates coming to prison from county jails. We also do extraditions, special escorts, and court escorts. Pay is not great, but there is excellent job security, a few perks, and great medical & retirement benefits.

I was working at a Wendy's... and I hope that college will ensure that I never have to go back. Seriously, never work there ever.

It's interesting reading about everyone's jobs...
I'm in my sixth teaching, but my duties included so much more. I'm a teacher, a nurse, a social worker, a guidance counselor, a correctional officer, and a jumper through many hoops. I enjoy working with the kids however the paperwork aspect of the job can be overwhelming. Politics is a pain... |

Until October 28th, I am a program director/journalist at a regional public radio network on the southeast coast. After October 28th I will either be a talk show producer or a manager of news/talk programming at a public radio station in a much bigger city and will be starting work on an M.A. in journalism. Good thread idea! I'm amazed at some of the fun jobs. This one -->First job is working part-time (3 or 4 days a week) at the Royal Conservatory of Music bookstore. would thrill me to no end. I love music bookstores. My favorite in college was Brodt (linky) which is now owned by one of my former classmates. |
Professional Couch Potato PhD

I work in the Technical Services Department in the library at a state university. Although, that's really a bit misleading as I don't mess too much with anything 'technical.' My days are usually spent at the Circulation desk, basic clerical work, or the occasional odd job.

I am the Executive Director of a United Way. (I love saying Executive Director, because it is not who I am, if you know what I mean. Before that I was a Juvenile Prison Guard, (There seems to be a theme) then i worked with Parenting & pregnant teens, then I worked with children birth to 3 with disabilities, then community education on Child abuse, now United Way.
