What kind of jobs do you folks have?

Im just curious, never asked this on a forum before, just thought it might spur some interesting conversation.

I'm a 911 operator, (Cant be a cop, Im color blind:()in the great state of Nevada, it pays really well, and its a great job. What about you guys?

Anxst 09-26-2005 04:24 PM

I'm the Team Manager of Dispute Resolution for AT&T Emerging Services. We handle billing disputes for all AT&T Broadband business services.

The pay isn't that great, nor are the benefits, but I work with some really great people.

Borla 09-26-2005 04:30 PM

I sell steel. :D

Huge steel coils like these:

I sell to people who make office furniture, appliances, electronics, etc. Most of my contacts and customers are yearly contract buyers, so it's more about building relationships and servicing their needs than anything else. It's not a bad job to have, and some of my perks (basically unlimited budget to entertain clients, lots of free trips, free tickets to sporting events, etc.) are very, very cool.

jt6879 09-26-2005 04:32 PM

Thats pretty cool, my perks are listening to people kill themselves...lol

Uncle Pony 09-26-2005 04:43 PM

Corrections Officer in a maximum security prison.

Irishsean 09-26-2005 04:45 PM

I work for Dell selling home and home office systems at the moment. Its not a bad job as they go, more advising people on what they need for what they want to do than actually selling. The people that call me already know they want a computer they just need a push in the right direction.

Lasereth 09-26-2005 04:52 PM

In the summer I work at a YMCA Camp in the kitchen. During the year I work as a computer lab operator that helps people learn why their sound won't work (muted).

Pragma 09-26-2005 05:16 PM

I'm a fifth year college student and a part time network security consultant/administrator

Granted, I still don't have the slightest idea what to do when I graduate, but there's plenty of time between now and May.

amire 09-26-2005 06:43 PM

I'm a freshman in college, studying Electrical Engineering.

This summer I worked as a cashier and bagger at a supermarket. Very interesting learning experience.

Carno 09-26-2005 06:53 PM

I'm a senior in college and a part time backroom stocker at Target.

Racer 09-26-2005 06:59 PM

Retired Navy Surface (ship driver) Officer. Currently working as a defense contractor building training courses for junior officers.

I work for a cabinet company specializing in custom commercial cabinets (schools, jails, hospitals, etc.). the majority of our work is in the bay area of northern california. My title is Production Engineer, I figure out material and hardware requirements for a each project, and resolve any design conflicts. I then generate the necessary paperwork and cut lists for the shop to manufacture the cabinets, and insure that the installers understand what goes where.

aberkok 09-26-2005 07:14 PM

Cool idea for a thread! I have two jobs and one career.

First job is working part-time (3 or 4 days a week) at the Royal Conservatory of Music bookstore. I sell scores and sheet music to the students and faculty there. It's open to the public so we get a lot of music afficionadi and wannabe American Idol contestants buying opera or pop-music song sheets. It's been good to me and has supported my living costs while at the same time taught me much important music trivia (important trivia?).

By night I am a jazz musician and even this has two sides to it. There's the side that will one day become all of what I am: composer, performer who plays what I want and hopefully can develop an interesting and vital body of work. I call this side the "artist." The other side is the guy that's slowly learning hundreds of the old standards, who plays in a quartet here, a trio there. This side of the musician (the "jobber") is how I make the rest of my living and over the last two years, this has grown to cover about %30 of my living costs. Hardly enough yet, but it's not like there's a shortage of professional piano players.

Right now I'm on leave from the bookstore and the "jobber" is dominating as I am doing a well-paying hotel gig in Hong Kong. In November I go back and the "artist" is going to start making his mark...

Siege 09-26-2005 07:18 PM

Manuel Hong 09-26-2005 07:32 PM

I'm in private practice as a Chinese herbalist and auriculotherapist. I also work part-time in a tearoom/herbal apothecary.

texxasco 09-26-2005 07:37 PM

Correctional Officer - I've worked in State Jails, Treatment Facilities, and Medium & Maximum Security units. While still a CO, I am now a Transfer Officer hauling convicts between state prison units, and inmates coming to prison from county jails. We also do extraditions, special escorts, and court escorts. Pay is not great, but there is excellent job security, a few perks, and great medical & retirement benefits.

Slavakion 09-26-2005 07:38 PM

I was working at a Wendy's... and I hope that college will ensure that I never have to go back. Seriously, never work there ever.

fresnelly 09-26-2005 07:44 PM

Here's a thread which delves into our daily work routines:

http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...hlight=day+job

I work in Theatre as a Lighting Designer. However, in October I'm starting a new job at a software company. Their flagship application is a CAD/Simulation tool for Concert and Theatre Lighting Designers. I'll still be working on actual shows to keep me sane.

thejoker130 09-26-2005 07:47 PM

I'm a near super senior at college who works in hell (the campus dining hall.)

MageB420666 09-26-2005 10:01 PM

Program Counselor at a Behavioral Health Hospital. I work with alcoholics, bi-polar, border-lines, drug addicts, crazy people, nuts, looneys, etc... and then there are the patients....

I've had some very interesting times working at that place, you wouldn't believe some of the things that people will believe, or say, or want to do.

Gilda 09-26-2005 10:08 PM

Middle school teacher, teaching humanities and family planning.

I also teach an evening course at the local branch of the state University.

I have a job offer on the table from a university on the other side of the country that I'm currently considering, but have made no decision about yet.

which means that if anything breaks, it's my fault. really, ask anyone around here

shesus 09-27-2005 04:01 AM

It's interesting reading about everyone's jobs...

I'm in my sixth teaching, but my duties included so much more. I'm a teacher, a nurse, a social worker, a guidance counselor, a correctional officer, and a jumper through many hoops. I enjoy working with the kids however the paperwork aspect of the job can be overwhelming. Politics is a pain...

little_tippler 09-27-2005 04:19 AM

I'm an artist, and currently work as the Assistant Curator at an Art Gallery here in Lisbon, Portugal.

Same here, except I work mostly with large credit defaults. There's no end of people who don't realize that 37% PA interest does add up substantially.

My perpetually unhappy father-in-law (career wise) has made a bucket load of money being a facilities manager, and in less than half a year, selling real estate. He wants to work at a 911 call center (he also used to be an EMT and cop) because it's the only place that everybody seems to enjoy their work. I'd probably go crazy.

Until October 28th, I am a program director/journalist at a regional public radio network on the southeast coast. After October 28th I will either be a talk show producer or a manager of news/talk programming at a public radio station in a much bigger city and will be starting work on an M.A. in journalism.

Good thread idea! I'm amazed at some of the fun jobs. This one -->First job is working part-time (3 or 4 days a week) at the Royal Conservatory of Music bookstore. would thrill me to no end. I love music bookstores. My favorite in college was Brodt (linky) which is now owned by one of my former classmates.

Professional Couch Potato PhD

guthmund 09-27-2005 05:55 AM

I work in the Technical Services Department in the library at a state university. Although, that's really a bit misleading as I don't mess too much with anything 'technical.' My days are usually spent at the Circulation desk, basic clerical work, or the occasional odd job.

I have to say that that, sir, is very, very cool. I wish I had the chops, or the confidence for that matter, to be even a poorly paid professional musician.

byesman 09-27-2005 05:56 AM

I am the Executive Director of a United Way. (I love saying Executive Director, because it is not who I am, if you know what I mean. I am so laid back and non-bossy that my staff loves me... at least thats what they tell me.) Before that I was a Juvenile Prison Guard, (There seems to be a theme) then i worked with Parenting & pregnant teens, then I worked with children birth to 3 with disabilities, then community education on Child abuse, now United Way. I plan on staying here as long as they will have me...

BigBen 09-27-2005 06:31 AM

I am a platoon commander in the Canadian Army.

Before that I was a section commander.

Before that I was a Section 2 i/c.

Before that I was a machine gunner.

Before that I was a radio operator.

Before that I think I was human, who enjoyed music, food, and the finer things in life. Today, if you give me a beer and a cold field ration, I am happy.
